I grew up in Olympia and I live in a town not too far away. I'm well over 50 years old so I know about the history of this state and Olympia. Thurston County, where Olympia is located, is tax happy. The tax for owning home and property is starting to chase many trying to afford life in Olympia to other counties. It'll be like Seattle soon. That's due to poor leadership at the state, county, and city levels. The city, itself, is fairly well kept, now that the city council figured out homeless people are not good for communities. Olympia is cleaning up its streets as is Lacey and Tumwater. There's still a lot of tagging (graffiti). There are some areas where it's best to not spend a lot of time in, namely the bus hub. That's been partially cleaned up as well but there are still problems there. One problem is people are too nice. They ignore the things that make Olympia unattractive and that sets a comfortable environment for those who don't play nice with others. A lot of businesses left due to problems not being addressed. Most of the school districts are pretty good. Some of them are outstanding. If you have school aged kids, do your research and look for homes in the appropriate area. Luckily, if you work in Thurston County, anywhere you drive is not going to be that far of a drive. If you travel north on I-5, expect traffic to get ridiculous around exit 111 and stay that way for a very long time, especially during the morning and evening hours. Good thing is there are other routes to take to help avoid traffic. Oh, and since there are a lot of environmental protection supporters, consider there will be limits with what you can do with your land. It would be best to purchase a house with property already established as a farm or with a horse pasture rather than creating your own. Okay, one of the really good things is the salmon run in late August through October. If you have never seen a salmon migration, there are plenty of areas with opportunities to see it. Yes, it rains a lot here but, during the summer, it would be challenging to find skies more blue than in Western Washington. The surrounding area has a LOT of recreational resources but expect to pay high prices for permits to access some of that recreation. Still, it's worth the investment. People are friendly around Olympia, for the most part. But they're also politically one sided so if you don't support the same political party, you might want to be careful of what you say if you want to avoid conflict.

My kids complained about the piles of needles on their walk to school. Police said it took to much time to keep cleaning them up. Maybe they got around to it lately?! Plastic straws illegal - plastic syringes okay!

Very true! They are also building apartments like crazy and taking over subdivisions with these bring Tacoma down here. Some of the out door things they say are true but this has turned in a liberal cesspool with them “allowing” homeless to sleep on your sidewalks and needles everywhere. Also taxes are through the roof!

The Goldilocks zone is the areas just south of Olympia. Quiet. Open. Close to recreation. Little crime. And a quick 10 minute freeway to drive to downtown Oly for urban needs. Country + City = Perfect.

Alaska weather? That’s hysterical considering how mild our winter temps are here averaging around 45 degrees and maybe snows 2 times a year. 😂 Alabama income? Our minimum is more than double Alabama’s minimum wage so I think you have WA state completely all mixed up with another state. 🧐

@@nutritioncoachjo nope. your hysterical private summer and internal furnace account for the delusion of warmth. like the agents i would imagine a 'nutrition coach' (nutritionist program drop-out?) is dependent on people with more money than sense. best of luck to those around you. it's going to be a rocky sunset

He's 100% right. If you want to walk on eggshells around blue haired alphabet people all day Olympia is the place for you. Gotta be one of the worst places in the country. They had beautiful nature and just messed it up bad.

@@nutritioncoachjo Went to 6F this last winter. 8F last winter. When it's milder the winds from the south take down the trees and your power. Can happen anytime. Arctic air is like being blindsided too.

I have lived in Olympia for58 years. Long ago I called it a perfect town. Not any longer. Massive crime, drugs, bums, taxation and over regulation. I want to move to a non democrat state.

Although I was born in WA state, I spent more than 50 years of my life in southern CA. Finally, in 2017, I retired and returned to the land of my birth. I chose Olympia because of it's vibrant art scene and it being centrally located in the state so you can go find things to do in just about every direction. I have met some wonderful people here and am so glad I chose Olympia.

I've lived in Olympia for many many years, and it's gone downhill. Entertainment is pretty lackluster here, even downtown. I wouldn't recommend this place to live, especially if you're under 35 years old. Looking forward to leaving soon.

I actually have lived here for several years now, and go downtown several days or nights a week, and have experienced none of that, aside from homeless people here and there as with any city. I've stopped to talk to some homeless folks and amazingly (not really) they are like anyoine else, go figure. Don't be scared and paranoid. MAGAs don't like it here, but then, they don't like much of anything or anyone, so they're not missed. Olympia is a beautiful inviting little city full of good, non-fascist people. :)

I have lived in Vancouver all but 6 years of my life, I am 82. retired. The only thing Wa. has going for it is no income tax, the weather sucks, I have not seen the sun for 6 weeks in my lifetime. The state is way to liberal for me but good if you lean left. The death tax is 20% of your nest egg when you kick the bucket, it's a nice chunk for the deadbeat Government. Mx. for 5 months out of the year for 14 years has been a god-sent. U.S.A. is rotting from the inside out, with no leadership, and moving away from God.
