The channel living with Cambriea might be encouraging for you! She helps others clean and organize their homes. In the basement your doing awesome too. You started in the corner and your slowly working around the room one section at a time. Same with the closets. Just do one at a time. You've already made massive improvements! Congratulations!!!!

I had a small laundry basket for each person in the family and as I took things out of the dryer I put it their basket.I felt like that eliminated the step of sorting. I only folded what I had to. All of the family members took their own baskets, put the stuff away and returned the baskets, empty or with dirty things. I only washed and dried the clothes. I started with the baskets when they were toddlers, but they were putting their own stuff away by first grade. Getting the whole family involved makes the process so much easier. My kids are grown now but they all have very neat homes.

Even after becoming a minimalist, I still hate folding laundry. 😂 Just because one has less clothes to manage doesn’t mean that person will end up finding pleasure in the task. Oftentimes, if my kids can’t find clothes, they know to check the laundry basket for it. So that’s a good thing. You’re doing great. This is a LONG process. You’ll constantly evaluate and reevaluate. But letting go is a muscle. The more you do it, the easier it gets. And the better you get at knowing what it is you don’t need. Keep up the good work!

I started my minimalist journey 7 months ago. I started small. Cleaned a drawer or closet. Now I’m a pro at getting rid of things. The Vets love me. A truck taking several bags a week. Now everything is looking beautiful. So easy to clean. Everything has a home. I wash, dry and put away dishes after every meal. Only takes a few minutes because there isn’t a lot to do. The dishwasher sits idle unless we have a party. I’m trying to get into good habits. Make the bed right after I get up. Clean the shower after each shower. Keep my kitchen clean all the time. So far it’s working. I just love my clean minimalist home now.

I use a dish wand. I keep it in my shower. It is filled with half dawn dish washing detergent and half rubbing alcohol. Wet down the shower walls and wipe down the walls with the wand. A lot of suds will appear. Rinse and very important dry with a cloth. The rubbing alcohol will remove the hard water spots on the walls and shower doors. It sparkles when you are finished. Take me 10 min I apply Rain’x on the glass shower doors once a month. Keeps the glass from soap build up.

It may seem like you can’t be lazy about things now but the trade off is definitely that instead of spending days thinking about what you should be doing and being annoyed that things still need doing, now you are learning that a few minutes a day with laundry or dishes is replacing the hours you no doubt spent thinking about stuff that was piling up. Most of the time I don’t realize how much a task was on my mind until it is done and I feel the release.

I love that you have a plate, bowl, cup, eating utensils for just the # of people in home. I have a tip. :) Buy socks that are all the same kind for each person. No patterned socks. Like one child has all white socks of same kind. Then another child has all blue socks. Another has grey socks etc. This is an easy way to separate from dryer and put into their dresser drawers and you and your husbands dressers. You dont have to hold up each sock and see what size it is and try to find the match to it then decide whose sock belongs whom.

I was gonna say the same thing, my “instinck” 🙊 made me think the “stick” was in the drain. Running water down the drains regularly helps to keep gases from backing up. If the pipe trap drys sewer gas can back up the drain pipe into the house. You might consider using an enzyme cleaner in the drains as well, they could just be fowled with gunk.
@terrilloyd3691
@terrilloyd3691 3 жыл бұрын
Once the water in the “P” trap (part of the drain) dries out, the gasses are able to come up into the room. The solution is to use the bathroom.

You are not a minimalist as much as you are no longer hoarding. You are keeping things clean, picked up and put away. You no longer have an overwhelming amount of 'stuff'. The stuff you have is kept put away. Your are keeping up with chores and not procrastinating about getting them done. I don't see the need to have magic number of clothing pieces. If the clothing is getting worn, it's okay to keep. Donate the pieces you never wear. I have no magic number of clothing pieces, but I do go through my clothes every few months and donate those pieces I no longer wear. You are doing amazing with your journey. Keep up the great work!

I have had a semi-minimalist mindset for a while now, but as I've learned...the journey never ends...but I'm thankful it is more accepted and embraced by so many people, because the questions as to why I don't have more of this, that, or the other have drastically decreased. Lol!! With a big family, I think this is a challenging lifestyle in the best sort of way, and it is so important, because we could so easily be swallowed up by our belongings if we stopped being intentional. Thanks for sharing! Can't wait for the next update!

I immediately noticed the fall decorations in the kitchen and in your shelves! They really become the focal point when you don’t have many items cluttering your space. I do have to warn you - if you get to the point where everyday you have time to do your curly hair and makeup - I’m out! Lol Your journey is very inspiring. Maybe you could do a video on the before and after of how you store your seasonal items before you second hand all your extras. Like pre hoarder storage vs minimalist storage and time comparison of set up and take down.

Let me begin by saying how much I love, love, love your honesty! It is inspiring, moving, and infectious! Also, let me say how much I resonate with you with regard to how easy it is to become a homeschool hoarder. We're all different in our natural gifts and bents, and I've always been something of a minimalist/neat freak, even when I was acquiring way more hs resources than we could ever get around to using. Even yesterday, in the midst of a season of accelerated minimizing, I agonized more than I expected to over hs stuff, contemplating whether I should hang onto them for my grandchildren (who are now 5, 4.5, 2.5, 16 mo, and in utero). Keep it up dear sister. I love your heart and your drive and so enjoy sharing in your journey.

Thank you for another great video! I'm crossing the word "lazy" out of my vocabulary. I am substituting it with the concept of priorities. My house was not a cluttered mess for years, because I was lazy. It was a mess, because my priorities were elsewhere (taking care of a very sick husband). Now, my priorities have shifted and I can focus on my home. Now, I have the opportunity to gain some new skills (minimizing/simplifying) and put them into practice, so that the next time life shoves my home to the bottom of the priority list, the clutter and disarray won't be so paralyzing.

Well said, Anne! Your comments are very helpful as I have a cluttered space even though it's a one-room efficiency apartment. Much of my time is spent doing casework for and assisting a disabled brother. Housework simply has to be postponed though I want to do a major cleaning and cleaning out and organizing. Things are especially busy and stressful now as I'm gathering documentation for the renewal of benefits for my brother and dealing with a change in his leasing situation and am also dealing with renewing my own health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace. As has been your experience I'm working according to what takes priority over something else and housework simply has to wait sometimes.

With the downstairs shower check the P-trap. If the shower isn’t being used the water in the p-trap will evaporate and the sewage gases will come into that room. If there is no p-trap then you will notice the smell being really bad when the shower is in use. It won’t smell like poop but it will smell organic and not in a good way. We discovered no p-trap in one of our showers and sinks.

Its in my kids room and holds their toys, extra backpacks(2), and their books.

I love how much nicer/relaxed things are looking in your living spaces. Instead of buying the Kallax bin case I bought several shelving units. If asked I would recomnend the shelving units. I had them connected in our old home as a library/game storage. Here in current rental I have them separated up and they are used for storing/holding long term storage bins, office/art supplies in daily use, items to sell, kitchen tools, as a clothing dresser and finally as a book case. Same amount of uprights and shelves, just differently configured and throughout our rental.

We are a minimalist family of 11. I am having another baby in 3 weeks and I dream of having two bathrooms! I’d love to help you with your basement haha!! I live on the other side of the world to you though :) I think its kind of fortunate that you DO have the basement area because that can be like a sorting area. When I decluttered our home I had NO areas to store things. So its good and bad. Good because you can write off one area whilst you sort but bad because then things can sit. I did MASS donations but with so many children and a shift working husband it still took a few years to get to maintenance level.

I'm curious about your calling yourself lazy. As a born minimalist, I think it is SO MUCH easier to have fewer things to care for and clean than a bunch of things to care for and clean. One day's worth of dishes takes 10 minutes to load. I can find 10 minutes every day to clean the kitchen. A week's worth of dirty dishes would take days of hard work and dedication. Dusting and caring for a living room filled with knickknacks and books and just stuff takes so much more time and energy than a more minimal arrangement. Same with kids' toys and dressers. Minimalism is for lazy people! LOL I don't actually think it's about laziness. I love having a tidy and clean home, but more important in the long run is that I also love spending my time with my family and doing my hobbies. Minimalism makes clean and tidy easier. It facilitates a happier family and less time spent cleaning and caring for possessions.

You are doing great. I think you need to give yourself some kudos and some grace. Celebrate the wins as you said but don’t lose momentum. Your channel inspires me as I have fallen off of decluttering. My energy has gone down the last few weeks in my pregnancy so I’m just like meh🤷🏽‍♀️ take 1 closet at a time and don’t lose sleep over the basement. I can only tell you what my hubby tells me - imagine how much you’ll accomplish in a few months or a year from now. It seems hard now but the end is so worth it. 😊

I’ve been on my journey as well. I’ve watched these same ladies you mentioned and love them but Erica, you’re my favorite! You’re so relatable for me. I’m also a Christian ✝️ and a homeschool Momma..and EX hoarder! 😆

Making great progress in your journey. You may want to check out Fly Lady. She has a website about decluttering and how much you can accomplish using a timer for 2-15 minutes at a time. Remember baby steps and doing something each day will get you closer to the minimalist journey.

I have recently discovered your videos on minimalism and you have inspired me to jump in. We are a family of hoarders who hoard different things. This didn't used to be an issue because I moved every year and typically tossed anything that didn't fit in my car. I have been living in the same home and its definitely gone way beyond my control. Thanks for sharing this, I know it's not easy

Ha right?! I am still breaking the habit or the inclination for more stuff. I’m working on our art room this week and it was empty! Put in two reading chairs and the rug. I felt compelled to add more until I questioned why.

I'm a grandma, so I watch for the minimal topics, I so love watching how real you are, you are so beautiful. Must be some kind of gasses coming from basement shower causing the smell.

I’m so in love with your decluttering series!!! Currently behind in laundry since we have a newborn at home (our first) and are still trying to find a routine. Love the idea of 5 items per clothing category. Need to check the how to our for that. Thank you for being so honest, showing it all!! and sharing your resources. PS: Love your hair!

The unused shower stinks because of sewer gas. The solution is to use the shower regularly to fill the trap with water. By using the shower as a closet, she accidentally created the problem of the smell. I think this is probably addressed in a later video.

Please look into checking the trap under the shower in the basement. My basement shower used to smell horrible but my dad worked on it and boom.....no more nasty shower. It is a gas trap that sometimes has horrible smells. Hope you get it fixed soon so you can use your other bathroom.
