I'm 5'6 and started kickboxing just over a year ago and your really right. I'm one of the shorter guys in my gym and now I love sparring tall guys now (I used to HATE it), softening up the body with hooks, waiting for the hands to drop then landing an overhand. I was scared of taking punches and hits, it's more mental for me. But after you start taking em often and improve mental and physical conditioning you get better at taking that punishment and before long take less because of the experience. I love mixing up low kicks, body kicks and knees with boxing combinations. Plus I just feel stronger and in conflict situations I feel less worried if shits gonna go down lol.

One thing I'd add about physical attributes would be age, at 63 I'm in well above average shape but I can't fight the same way I could when I was 23, 33, or even 43. I was once more of a kicker with a strong background in Tae Kwon Do and now I'm having to relearn a lot about fighting. I'm having to pick up more boxing skills and save the kicks for the most opportune moments to use them. As an aside on Tai Chi, Josh Waitzkin is an American Chess Master and world champion, he's also a world champion in Tai Chi Chuan push hands competition. His book "The Art of Learning" is an excellent source and in it you see comparisons to chess strategy martial arts strategy. I like your content, thanks!!

I’m very creative, short (171cm), little torso, I am used to take kicks and punches. I’m really good with my variety of low kicks and knees and elbows. I’m very good at grappling because my low gravity. So I do Kyokushin karate, muay thai and judo. Basically i mix martial arts using my tiny body and cutting the distance so well. And thanks to Kyokushin I can take hits to my body really good. And short distance is my distance.

It do be hard doing striking arts like MMA or Boxing or Muay Thai when you only 5'7 and everyone around ya is 3+ inches taller with longer reach, gotta go harder and riskier by brawling deeper in there to make up for the diff unless you're just wickedly skilled and trying to avoid CTE all the while too lmaoooo but if I get the time or money I'd still love to try out MMA nonetheless.

For me it took me a while to figure out my fighting style. This may be weird, but I kinda think of it like chess, making the best possible moves. So I kinda based my style based off logic, whatever attack that produces the best outcome for me. I will take a hit if it means I will be in a better position. It’s pretty much based off of Bruce lee’s being like water. If I need to fight a certain way, then I’ll adapt to it. This also helps me keep my emotions in control and more focused. I hope this makes sense. (MMA btw)

I have long arms and long legs and i don't like to use my hands for striking, just for paring or defense. So I tried Taekwondo. But I've never been anything like athletic and I couldn't keep up to the pace. So I moved on to Tai Chi, Martial Tai Chi, not that one we usually see in the parks. It has a martial, real applications approach but I miss that "finding your why" because I'm a slow person but I love kicks, not necessarily real fight kicking, but all sorts of basic kicks, every version of side kick makes me fill "thats my why", guess what, Tai Chi does have some kicks but mostly front kicks or at best crescent kicks. I miss the side kicks or the hook kicks. I suppose I need to find some kind of slow Taekwondo, maybe in another life. I mean, Taekwondo include some slow kicks exercises for strengthening and it was my favourite part.

The only three good things i have for martial arts are grip strength(i naturally have strong grips), strong mentality( not afraid of getting hit but i do used to be a p**** and feared fighting but not anymore) and ancestry gene for wrestling because of that alot of people tells me to go to bjj, wrestling and martial arts similar to these but i have a great love for Muay Thai and boxing and at the same time i can't gain weight and very skinny no matter how much i eat I don't get big i even go to the gym and i only added 6kg to my body and those are all mucles not fats. So what should i choose should i go for what i love and have passion in or what I'm made for(also consider this fact that where i live Rawalpindi, Pakistan there aren't much of martial arts gym and at the same time the budget is tight i can't afford injury and better diet especially more gyms)?

"I have lost faith in the chinese classical arts, though I still call mine chinese because all styles are products of land swimming, even the Wing Chun school. So my line of training is more toward efficient street fighting with everything goes, wearing head gear, gloves, chest guard, shin/knee guards, etc...I've named my style Jeet Kune Do, reason for my not sticking to Wing Chun is because I sincerely feel that this style has more to offer regarding efficiency." - Bruce Lee to William Cheung "Bruce's art is based on a set of principles & philosophy. Because Bruce had moved away from that to a more effective streamlined way of fighting." - Tommy Carruthers [Original JKD Instructor]
