That is a Kukkiwon TKD curriculum chamber for the side kick. After the chamber, the extension is called execution, then retraction. Traditional or as taught by GM Jhoon Rhee, the side kick has a front kick chamber. Nice video. Great physique. All of these exercises are done in Ohdokwan/Chungdokwan Taekwon-Do; however, they are done with a chair or similar to keep the chamber high. As you progress, the chairs' distance from the practitioner decreases. Give it up for traditional TKD and the former glory of the ITF. Important note, those exercises were taught to Bruce Lee by the late GM Rhee, Father of American TKD. Oh yeah, our chambers are swapped for the side kick which uses a front kick chamber. Your side kick uses our hook kick chamber. We are taught to be able to deliver any of the basic kicks from the front kick chamber. Olympic style TKD is not all there is. Kukkiwon practitioners and South Koreans alike act as though it doesn't exist. Our form has been battle tested in Vietnam, where ROK Marines had the highest kill ratio of anyone, well accept for the Australians or New Zealanders.

The slow training reminds me of something my old kick boxing coach would say: "if you can do it slow, you can do it fast." Instead of rushing through technique he would have us slowly practice strikes so that we can focus more on the subtle movements, like rotating your wrist in a punch at the last second. And then train it consistently so that when you execute it with speed and strength, your muscle memory kicks in and delivers perfect technique without really thinking about it. Also, the last bit where you move through different kick positions while chambered is good. Especially if you practice moving from straight kick to roundhouse, you'll learn the setup for a question mark kick.

Any tips for those just starting out and being not as flexible as you? I can barely kick at hip height without feeling it in my hip. Is the answer to keep going as high as I can (even if it’s not that high) or do I need something else to train flexibility first?

Knee in front on both legs I took to the easiest but dude it's so sick that I can hold each leg in a side kick chamber position now without a wall. I was never an amazing kicker, but I used to be able to kick higher, but that was before the kids got here almost 20 years ago. Now, I'd like to get some mobility back! When I try to do kick chamber holds, especially side kick chamber holds (They were ALWAYS my weak point), it actually hurts like I cramp up. Do I just keep trying or what?
@BuildingPhysiques7 ай бұрын
Most definitely you still can. I read in a book of mine, that cramping is usually a sign of weakness regarding the muscle. So if you feel this as you’re training this is normal. You have to push through but don’t over exert yourself. I’m assuming it’s your glutes right?
