I would say the red one and the one of the others that has workers first. I wonder if the red pupae having no cocoons is somehow related to them being a different species. That’s why I would like to see both in a controlled set up like a hybrid nest in the begging, because I’d like to see more pupae of both colonies in comparison. Maybe the red spaces out the larvae more for some reason and therefor they can’t build a cocoon or maybe they just generally don’t produce silk. It’s an interesting question.

I think it would be cool to do an ant race, where you see which ones grow biggest, and then release the smallest colony every week until you only have one left. However if you could combine them I think it would be cool to have a huge colony with all 8 queens Edit: To clarify, I mean only combine if we figure out the species, and that they won’t fight Edit 2: I just had another idea. If my first idea happened, he could use the failing colonies to test which foods they preferred, and see if it differed between colonies. Edit 3: You should also keep the one that is more red for sure, since it is possibly a different species

That's not a bad idea, but the 2nd one is. Unfortunately we don't know how the colonies would react to one another. They might just be chill and create a really big colony or they could have a full on war between one another
@Nate-yb4ox
@Nate-yb4ox 3 жыл бұрын
My vote is for two colonies. You can do a series observing and comparing their growth which could be a fun, friendly "competition" series like the rhino beetle games and also reveal cool things about how different colonies of the same species grow and change over time given different set-ups, food choice, etc. like a long term observational study.
@nathanielc.6562
@nathanielc.6562 3 жыл бұрын
Issue is however, rhino beetles don't kill each other intentionally in a fight, while ants do quite the opposite. Plus he has stated that pitting ants against each other is not going to fly so yeah...
@Nate-yb4ox
@Nate-yb4ox 3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanielc.6562 Obviously wasn't saying to pit them against eachother in a fight. Not only is that unethical it would mean you couldn't observe how the two colonies would grow differently like I mentioned in my comment. A "competition" could be "which colony reaches x stage of development first" or something similar. I obviously wasn't suggesting a fight to the death.

When we see how red she is, we see that as her having a big heart since she's been such a great mother So let's call her the Queen of Hearts (if you don't use this name for her, you should definitely keep this name in mind for future use) As for queens to keep, we suggest two. The two most further along. Queen 7 (obviously) and Queen 2 or 3 (depending on which one you think is further along). And since these are natives, keeping two instead of all of them is a good thing as the more natives out there, the more they'll be able to combat the invasives

Name the Queen 7's colony 7-Eleven. And name her Slurpee As we are all aware, ants are everywhere. And so are 7-Elevens in countries like Japan, Thailand, South Korea, the US, and of course Philippines. So you could say every worker ant within the colony is a 7-Eleven franchisee. And why Slurpee? Well as we saw in another video, Queen ants feed their young, ant milk. The ant milk in this case, is the Slurpee "sold" (fed) to every 7-Eleven to keep them growing. It's also in reference to the fact that she is red, like a classic Cherry Slurpee

Keep them all at least for until they all can start a colony. Once they're all developed enough, release the ones that fare the least well in an enclosed setup, and keep the one that is doing best in an enclosure. Just keep them long enough to know which one has the best chances, to avoid a situation where you release them and the one stat stays doesn't make it after all and it's too late to get the other ones back

I would like to watch 3, and see the difference in their growth stages in comparison to each other. All with different set ups, and it's good insurance if you lose one. Once the strongest queen is established really well you could do an ant giveaway with the other set ups or have a full release video. It would be interesting to have you do an outdoor one. Release them and watch where they go and how they establish outside and if they survive in the location you put them or if they decide to move.

I would say to keep hold of 4 queens for a while and let the others go and have 2 separate "experiments" set up with 2 ants per experiment (housing them separately of course) that way you have 2 different things to film and if one experiment takes a unexpected turn you still have the other 2 queens in the other experiment. also then you can occasionally do a video where you show how all 4 queens are doing since they all came from the same flight its a good way to show how different environments and/or diets affects there population growth death rates within the colonies ect .

Sorry this is going to get a bit long, but I'm really proud of me! So, every year, when you announce nuptial flights in my hemisphere, I'm like - "I am [32, 33, 34...] years old and have never seen a queen ant in the wild. No WAY can anyone but experts actually find them and catch them... I've just gotten back from a private camping event (LARP, for those in the know), and Saturday evening the sky was FULL of wingy bugs. Most people there assumed skeeters and whatnot because they were in full force this weekend. Anyway, I'm walking down a sand path and notice a metric crapton of ant mounds are EXTREMELY busy. Like, New York rush-hour busy. So I get down and start investigating. Lots of wingy ants. Aw, sweet. I now know those are elates, thanks to you. And... O...M...G... Amongst the elates are some much bigger wingy-ants. QUEENS! I was spotting queens and elates up the wazoo. Of course, a bunch of people see me on the ground and are like..."uh...you ok?" So I started explaining about nuptial flights, and elates, and pointing out which ants were which, and a few people even borrowed my magnifying glass (I use it for embroidery classes) and were following around queens. And pretty soon there's a dozen grown ass, sober adults cheering on elates and queens to get their grooves on, get laid, "Have fun with the sex!" etc. It only lasted a few hours, but it was absolutely incredible! The cloud of ants in nuptial flight ended shortly before sundown. I don't really know my local ant species too well (other than the M. minimum that spent the summer attacking me in the garden), but for anyone that DOES know ants, it was in Connecticut and they were itsy bitsy red ants. Thank you SOOOOO much for teaching me this part of the ecosystem I probably would never have noticed WITHOUT your guidance over the years.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m uh…50ish, and found myself watching the nuptial flight of the carpenter ant in my yard last week! My husband thinks I’ve been watching too much KZbin “critter” videos. Lol. But it really was cool to watch.

While I am awed by your massive display set-ups, I'd love to see you highlight the start and growth of a set-up meant to be easily and safely moved. A lot of us don't have a ton of space or move fairly regularly which makes it intimidating to keep ants and other pets with delicate set-ups. I think you'd have lots of tips and tricks especially with your recent adventures

I like King Yelob’s idea of an ant race, getting rid of the smallest colonies until there’s only one left, I like some of the other people’s ideas of keeping two for comparison, and I also like the idea of merging the colonies. So why don’t we do them all? Have an ant race until there’s only two of them left, keep them like that for awhile for comparison, then merging them later on.

I'm partial to carpenter ants, so I would probably keep more than 1.. I have a question though... Theoretically, if you had multiple queens that were raising male ants... Couldn't you introduce one queen to the other queens male offspring? Would they not mate?

I'd be really interested to see what would happen if you took 2 queens and swapped their test tubes. Would the queens continue to raise the other's brood? Would the nanitics recognize them as their queen still? Just something I was thinking about!

Keep Queen ant #1! She seems to be the most motherly and determined out of the group, their colony could even be called the “Mother of Ants”! However, ants #6 and #7 would have the best chance to have the biggest colony’s!

I think you should make ant Olympics, similar to the ones you made for the beetles, and keep the best colony! Competition ideas: 1) exploration race: hide a piece of food in an outworld, see how fast they can locate it. 2) eating contest: first colony to fully consume a pray of equal size wins

I would say keep 2 Queen with a Medium Brood pile and the Weakest one. What my reasoning is behind this, 2 Good start colonys in diffrent setups and giving the weakest a chance since i double she wouldnt make it in the wild. So giving her a chance to raise the Empire we all desire :)

I caught three carpenter queens about a month or two ago. I took a risk and kept them together even though I don’t know if they’re polygynous(?). One died, but two are raising brood together, and there are a ton of pupae with spin cocoons. I’m so excited for them to hatch!!! I have their future home all set up for when they get enough workers. Raising queens is so much fun!

The queen with the very well ordered brood should be called "The Librarian" lol. As Joseph was a carpenter in the Bible, how about Josephine for another? The colony name(s) could be the Woodworkers, Woodsmen, or as we call them here in the UK, the Chippies! I'd say keep all the definitely female broods for now and let them develop past the nanitic stage, then release some where you are as that is where they'd have ended up naturally if you hadn't caught them. As for the potential Ant House ants, keep at least two, so you have a much better chance of having a successful family to move into it with. Given the sad but very understandable news about you not being able to bring your largest colonies from Manilla, you'd have one ready-made family as it were. As they're an indigenous species, any further "spare" colonies not released at the cottage, could be released in your land, building up the number of locals versus invasive species there. I don't know if they'd do well against the fire ants you have, but I'm sure they'd hold their own against others. This cautious transplantation of them into "safe" area would give the by then thriving colonies a good chance to build up their numbers before they're discovered by potential enemies (that's going to happen wherever you release any ants, so having gone past the nanitic stage would be a real benefit to them, irrespective of whether you want to keep them or not). Anyway, those are my thoughts on the subject. I hope I've explained myself well enough!

My suggestion for Queen #7 is Queen Persephone - something about her reminds me of that mythological tale and her red coloring plays in with the pomegranate symbolism.

Maybe keep 2 or 3, and put them in a terrarium divided into two or three sections for each colony. Then every nuptial flight, you could put a section on the top, and put up all the newly queened ants for adoption, plus it would be cool to see a nuptial flight every year. If the species is polygamous, then just merge all the colonies.

I would keep four of them in different set ups, and see if the ants favor one set over an another. It would be cool to see in videos to see if the set ups have any effect on population size (would be also cool if you can make an outdoor set up happen).
