Looking forward to next video.I’ve read in the past that typically it’s only one of the side bearings that fail and you can get away with only replacing that. I look forward to seeing what all the bearings look like when you have it apart.

Morning Richard So yeah normally it's the just the carrier bearings that fail so most people just change them and leave the pinion bearings alone

Great info, big job. I removed the front drive/prop shaft at the beginning which definitely gives more room to remove the diff. With that diff out it's a good time to repair/replace the steering rack. I really don't mind working on my LR3 seems pretty straight forward. I had two LR3's. Transmission went out in one and I kept it for parts. My 2nd LR3 front diff went out so I took the good diff off the LR3 with the bad tranny. Took two days but three years later, still running good.

Would definetly be handy having a parts car ! I love working on my disco it does do my head in at times but because there is little if info out there for bigger jobs I'm always learning and there by far the most comfortable 4wd for touring

​ @OUTBACK @ZMan Discovery How did you guys diagnose the bad front diff? I am getting a motion related whirring noise from the front end. Front center vehicle. No noise in neutral. Change in whirring pitch on acceleration. One of my mechanics said front diff. Diff oil is new and noise remains. Fair amount on super fine sediment out of diff. Teaspoon? No grinding sound that I can discern. No tranny issues or noises in Hi or Lo or during manual shifting. Because we have two LR3s I know the whir is not correct. This vehicle is about to clock 200k miles with original front diff. Was planning to mount a GoPro under the vehicle to try and isolate sound. Any and all thoughts would be much welcome!

@@ChristofBove sounds diff related to Me as I said 8nnthe video it's really common for the carrier bearings to fail which will give you a whirring noise and in my case a slight knock during deceleration and acceleration I went off how bad my oil was getting almost instantly. And also jacked all 4 wheels up and had the car on stands with the with wife driving it slowly so I could confirm it was the front diff

@@ChristofBove My front diff had a loud grinding sound. I would be interested in hearing the sound you are getting. Also, don't be too alarmed with a small amount of fine sediment from your diff when changing the fluid. However, from your description I would guess your front diff is starting to go bad. You should take it apart and inspect the gears. Good luck and keep us updated👍🏻

Sure needed doing. All us D3 owners will be doing these diffs at some stage, yet there doesn't seem to be much part or service support out there. Thanks for another good video.

Yeah mate it's actually super thrustrating how little information there is out there for landrovers , Hopefully part 2 will help alot of people out but it's still a risk as technically I havnt set it up to OEM specs just a generic sort of average that myself and the old boy found as suitable for it. Time will tell I won't post part 2 until I have done a few kms on the diff and drained the oil and inspected

Come on, I'm sure you've seen bearings far worse in equipment that's still running :) anyway great video, defiantly a job I'll have to do at some stage I think, but for now it's looking OK on the oil samples

🤣 definetly have seen worse but not on my vehicles, that's strictly prohibited on my gear hahah Yep oil analysis is definetly handy do you just use it through your work

There are very few technical maintenance videos for Discovery 3 or 4, so I am thrilled you are contributing in this area. What symptoms were you noticing to prompt the repair? Bad oil during a drain, a particular noise while driving? I’m tempted to find a core and order a rebuild kit just so I can follow along.

Thanks Walter , I had a knock in the front end removed the front drive shaft and jacked the front up and when I was turning it back and forth by hand it felt super light and had a smal knock which I new would sound worse when the torque from the engine goes through it instead of my hands doing it As far as the rebuild goes I technically have only set it up as if it was a hilux or dmax front diff as I had no specs to go off for the actually rebuild from landrover So far it feels and drives nice but have only done 200kms so far on it

Good save. this is one job you should be glad you jumped in early. I think the front diffs on the D3 seem to be vulnerable. Not helped by diff breathers that were prone to clogging. The first time I dropped my front diff oil was a bit of a shock, looked like thick Coffee Chill. :(

Thanks so much for this video! I suspect my front diff is in dire needs. I have a growl/grind when I lift off the throttle. Did you have the same experience?

I didn't have a growl grind that I could hear when driving , That could be your diff but it could also be your brakes dragging or a bad wheel bearing just some other things for you to check first

You said at the end of your video- that you'd get a new crushed sleeve spacer ; where could I buy a new spacer ?

Hey Luke I'm unsure where to get a new collapsible spacer I was going to.get a solid spacer and shims made if this one gave me dramas so far has held up well

Hey thinkagain if your referring to the right side axel tube that the cv shaft slides through then you would only need to remove the right hand cv shaft to replace it If yours leaking ?

@@OUTBACKDiscovery The part is called the FRONT DIFF EXTENSION TUBE part number TAU500080. I live on a hill and dont like having both wheels off on axel stands. Do you only need to pull out the right hand side cv drive shaft or take out the left too? No leak, just a vibration on acceleration and a swirling sound while under load. I had it diagnosed with a stethescope and its the baring in the tube.

@@Thinkagain6 just the right side Once the cv is out there's one mounting bolt on right side through a bush and then 4 bolts holding it to the diff and its good to go I didn't cha get the needle bearings in that tube as I couldn't get one in time but definetly wish I did haha

FYI There isnt a video or information on that part replacement anywhere on the entire internet and youtube. I bet you would get lots of views for that demonstration/fix FRONT DIFF EXTENSION TUBE. I’m after replacing my prop shaft that connects to the diff can I just loosen the diff to give me riggle room to get it out or do I need to take all the front apart like you did? TIA

Hey Alex if you are replacing the driveshaft from the front diff to transfer case Support the transfer case and remove gearbox crossmenber that gives you the room you will need

What were the symptoms? Knocking ? Clunking? . I have a bad growling but can't seem to pin point if it's front diff or bearing. ( I tried loading the bearing still no luck).

Diff oil never looked good when I changed it Had a clunk coming from the front Originally removed drive shaft and jacked up the front and the wife moved wheels back and forth aggressively and I could hear the knock coming from the diff was only gentle but was definetly present ( make sure the knock isn't coming from worn cv ) also

I've got the growling also. I've replaced brake pads, rotors, calipers, wheel hub and axle. Only thing left is the diff. Any other ideas what it could be?

I no it's a simple one but is the rock gaurd for the rotor straight , I no when they have any damage to them they can end up running on the rotor from time to time It's hard to say without hearing the noise Do you hearing anything when you jack up the car and rotate the tyres manually

@@OUTBACKDiscovery Yes I hear it. I have had all 4 wheels jacked up and with someone else in the car I putting the gas on I can hear it. This past week I removed the calipers from the rotors and hung them from the upper control arm. I was unable to turn so I just went in reverse and forward 100 feet. Still getting the sound.

Also, brake rock guard is straight. It's most noticialble when in drive but no acceleration with very low speeds but it is still there with acceleration just not as bothersome with the noice of the tires and engine muffling it.

@@cltrovers it's hard to no without seeing or hearing it myself If you removed the callipers and its still doing it when moving its definetly somewhere in your driveline I'd check your centre bearing on your driveshaft and make sure that hasn't worn out , normally you get more of a knock with that though and then next time it's on stands remove your front driveshaft and rotate wheels and listen for the noise then aswell

Hey Nick put 35km on it since and holding up fine Ideally it would of been good to get a solid spacer made up and some shims but it's going great, touch wood

@@OUTBACKDiscovery What happened to cause that reaction? Hopefully I don't regret my purchase, already so mentally invested. Has been bloody amazing out in the bush and none of my mates aren't impressed after a short ride with me off-road. You should consider buying another, as they're so cheap now, saw a few sell for 3-4k locally with seemingly small issues. Would make great content! :D Or loss. Again, thanks for the content.
