What a clear, direct lesson in what lightening can do! I think it is the best I have seen. That poor owl - or whatever ! how weird ! ... and why WERE there lots of dead large birds in the area? Ominous! The silverbuckles and buttons, that's fun, these folks were not paupers! And the stuff is sweet. Cool planing tool !

Could be someone is shooting them or poisoning them, they usually end up on the floor though in that case, not stuck in tress. Depends where they fell I suppose.

Here's a little info for ya. The big tree struck by lightning will most likely die now, because just under the bark, the first inch is where the water is sucked up into the limbs, which is why lightning followed it perfectly straight to the roots. My grandpa lived on top of a mountain in N.C. and nailed insulators to trees to run his electric fence, and it would get fried due to lightning hitting the trees and following the fence wire.

I know a rancher that found a small calf in a tree that was brought up there by a mountain lion.
@Objective-Observer2 жыл бұрын
@@sylviajones3355 Oh, yes, the really big cats are best known for doing that; leopards and jaguars in particular. I wasn't sure that a Florida Panther [mountain lion, puma, etc] would get that far north. I didn't think that size of wild cat was common in S.C. But Bobcat, yep. Those are pretty much nation wide.

hi beau, i wonder if you could encase deeply rusted artifacts like the hoe in a clear, hard epoxy resin. that would prevent any pieces being able to flake off and prevent any further oxidation. i have whole animal specimens encased in clear epoxy resin and they don't decompose at all. just an idea.
@aquachigger Жыл бұрын
Depends. If the rusting is deep, only electrolysis will preserve it. I guess you could encase it think epoxy in a block and it would at least keep its shape.
@NeilSmith-p7n Жыл бұрын
@@aquachigger might make an interesting paperweight at least. it's a shame to see those majority-rust relics go to waste.

Well chig you better get comfortable for this one back when I was 19 I was teaching rowing and canoeing merit badge at a scout camp the area was notorious for lightning strikes during storms so everyone would gather at the main Ramada during them to take head counts on one bad rainy storm the kids from campsite 15 said their scout master was missing so me and another guy ran all the way up the hill to campsite 15 (probably 600 yards ) when we got there the guy was slowly taking sleeping aga off the line that were airing out and the first thing I noticed was a partially collapsed canvas tent (the old ones with the wooden stakes at front and back and a screw on the top of the stake the eyelet in the canvas tent went on) well the wooden pole was shattered in the middle and partially collapsed I asked the scout master if he was ok and he said I think I got struck by lightning… one minute I was taking sleeping bags down the next thing I knew I was lying on my back and the rain was hitting me in the face… he turned to take the last sleeping bag off the line and that’s when I noticed a 1 inch wide black streak running down the back of his yellow rain slicker and I replied yes I think you were you need to come down to the Ramada with everyone else and get checked out so we headed back down to the Ramada when we got back there it was still raining and there was a giant Ponderosa pine tree probably 4 feet in diameter about 20 feet from where I was standing all the sudden there was a bright white light and I hit the ground as fast as I could the next thing I heard was an extremely loud tearing noise that sounded like 1000 phone books being ripped in half at the same time then a couple of pops and then nothing I looked up and everybody else had hit the ground as well I looked at the pine tree and there was a 6 inch wide 6 inch deep gash running down it were all of the bark and part of the tree had been removed there was no thunder as I was too close to the strike to hear it everybody got up and miraculously nobody had been hit by the lightning or the shrapnel that came off the tree next to the tree was an out house building and it was smoking so I walked over and was looking around the outside of it and up at the top it had wire mesh for vents That was attached with nails all the wire had been welded to the nail heads then I walked inside and the first thing I noticed was holes in the concrete that Were cone shaped There were three of them but I could not see any pieces of the concrete anywhere upon further inspection I noticed the toilet paper it was on a piece of metal pipe so it could roll And sticking straight out from it horizontally From the middle of the roll was shredded toilet paper it’s stuck out from the roll approximately 8 inches and went from a half dollar size at the roll out to one piece of toilet paper at the end of it we figured the lightning had exited off the pipe and threw the roll the quartermaster ended up putting it in his shop as a souvenir was the craziest thing I ever saw and it was definitely weird that there was no thunder the scoutmaster ended up being OK and when we went back to the campsite to check it we found 3-8inch diameter pine trees that had grown up really close to each other and we could see where the lightning head skipped down each one of the trees then traveled to the screw in the top of the wooden dowel for the canvas tent and probably hit him in the back of the slicker. There was one other incident that year that was kind of strange a group of kids and the scoutmaster were out doing the wilderness survival merit badge where you sit for an hour and write down all the wildlife you see they happened to be sitting on top of the canyon edge and when they were done and got up to leave the kid reached for his water bottle and went over the edge of the canyon he fell straight down 80 feet onto the rocks at the bottom we figured he was dead we hurried back to camp and grab the repelling gear (they had a ropes course with safety harnesses and repelling gear to help you get up to the top of the course without dying) so we took it over there and repelled into the canyon the kid at the bottom was alive😳 and all he had was a broken ankle (the ankle with the shoe on it ) his other foot was missing the shoe and we searched and searched and searched because he wanted it but we never found it anywhere he had to be carried a mile up the canyon to where we could get him helicopter access to be taken to the hospital and he ended up just fine we even went back to look for the shoes some more but still never found it anyway if you made it through the novel this far just wanted to say thanks for the reminder of days long passed nice finds for you both thanks for sharing see you on the next one👍🏼👊🏼

Sounds to me a landown/farmer is poisoning problem animals and the birds that will eat dead things are getting secondary poisoning...that or it's the bird flu that's hitting the waterfowl right now. But that random dead armadillo with the vultures on it in one of the other episodes makes me think poisoning.
