California is full of interlopers. Californias GDP is almost entirely based in Agriculture. Something these interlopers don’t understand. The Mediterranean fruit fly could have a detrimental effect on the agriculture industry and environment of California and if it is not eradicated from the state it will eventually lead to an economic disaster in California. What was done in the 80s was not an overreaction.

This fly is actually native to California. People like you forget that animals (such as flies think these) can have native habitats all over the world. Not just in one specific place! If animals were only native to one specific place then we wouldn't have half the native food plants and animals here today 😉. Also, these flies do not do as much damage as you or they are fear mongering about. They are harmless to humans and animals.
@jpa435
@jpa435 14 сағат бұрын
Yes of course things like apples, oranges, potatoes, and a whole host of other things are not native to California but they are beneficial to us, so we propagate them and they do very very well in our Mediterranean like climate. Unfortunately so does the INVASIVE species of the Mediterranean fruit fly. See the correlation. Look I take Agriculture in my home state of California very seriously and when you are wrong you are wrong. Spreading misinformation like that is helping nobody. “Ceratitis capitata commonly known as the Mediterranean fruit fly or medfly, is a yellow-and-brown fly native to sub-Saharan Africa. It has no near relatives in the Western Hemisphere and is considered to be one of the most destructive fruit pests in the world. There have been occasional medfly infestations in California, Florida, and Texas that require extensive eradication efforts to prevent the fly from establishing itself in the United States.” Source: USDA website also verbatim in Wikipedia.

And then they lie to your face and deny it. @@squidward5110 The problem isn't the nuisance of a fruit fly being in your food, they're destructive to crops: C. capitata is the most economically important fruit fly species because of both its ability to survive cooler climates more successfully than most other fruit fly species and its ability to inhabit more than 200 tropical fruits and vegetables to which it causes severe destruction and degradation. The practices that are used to eradicate the medfly after its introduction into a new environment can be extremely difficult and expensive, but infestation of C. capitata lowers crop yields and induces costly sorting processes for fresh fruits and vegetables.

I screamed and did a weird jerky dance. It crawled under a shelf and I was traumatized for days after. (I’m terribly afraid of spiders.) With all the transporting of food and goods from all over the place, that spider could have been from anywhere. Ugh!!!!
