When you mention using the medallion and then you mention using the app, does that mean that you have to carry your phone to use the app, or are you doing whatever simply by using the medallion (like, does it have a touch screen)?

The app and The medallion are separate. You do not need your phone with you to use the medallion. It does not have a screen, it only tracks who you are and where you are for unlocking doors and making purchases. The app on your phone allows you to see schedules, make orders and find your friends etc...
