Thanks for the content. I have discus and for me it's part of the fun and achievement to watch them grow. It's part of the experience. If you're purely going for asthetics then buy bigger discus but I prefer like walking the yourney with them. I have a black background too and seems okay. I've heard that a planted tank causes peppering with the pigeons. Good stuff and thanks for the tips

I got my first and they were supposed to be 2.5 - 3 inches but were more like 2 inches. I was a complete beginner too so Im not sure I got them to their max potential. So if doing it again Id maybe start with 4 inch fish and go from there. With the littluns you need to be around to feed regularly and clean lots. I also fell for the good old trick that I can fit 30 plus adults in this tank so buy more of my baby fish. The stocking level is important to spread the aggression out but too many is too much maintenance and then its just not fun. Glad you find the info useful.

Beautiful fish and tank. Saved to revisit, cheaper to watch others than buy in the present economic times when you may be eating those fish if it gets worse.

Great video, thanks very much. How do you regulate KH when using RO water?
@discus.switch

I have discovered that adding some coral sand to the substrate has stabilized my pH at 6.3. For this tank I have only added about a pint of coral sand. My aeration only comes on when the pH drop by 0.1 and its is almost completely stable at 6.3 since adding the sand.

It's just standard aquarium safe sand. It's a bit of a mixture in there as some get removed on cleaning and gets replaced.

Thanks for the great video. I’m in the research process now with discus. I’ve had all types of aquariums for the past 30+ years. I have a 75 gallon reef tank now and I’m thinking of changing over to a planted discus tank. What does that mean? First off, I’m no stranger to water changes, lol. Second, I have my tank already, a sump, and an RODI unit, and third, I’ve got the wife’s approval 😅😅. I’m even considering setting up an automatic water change unit so I can have daily water changes with just the push of a button. I was thinking of 6 discus (domesticated) with some rummy nose. Do you dose anything water-wise or is straight RODI okay?

I've been using RO with 25%hma water. You need to maintain a kh around 4 or 5 so the pH is kept roughly constant. Keep the tank clean too as the main problems.i have is with gill flukes. Any uneaten food that gets trapped in the decor quickly causes issues. So make your tank layout easy to clean with no dead spots.

@@discus.switch I know I mentioned a planted tank, but it will be a sparsely-planted tank. I’m not looking to have a full-blown planted.

@@pacificreefer4495 sounds good. A lot of people have those bare tanks. I prefer a few plants and I'm sure the fish like it. As long as you can vacuum everywhere it'll be fine 👌
@pacificreefer4495
@pacificreefer4495 2 жыл бұрын
@@discus.switch one more question about the sand…do you vacuum deep down into the sand or just kind of graze the top layer.

Do you use 100% of RO water or do you supplement it with tap water
@discus.switch
@discus.switch 2 жыл бұрын
I sometimes add 25% water from the HMA filter, this keeps the kh high enough to stabilize the pH between water changes. If I use all remineralized RO the kh is quite low and the pH can drop quite quickly.

Thank you for the tips. What is the background of your tank? Is that blue paint or blue film?
@discus.switch
@discus.switch 2 жыл бұрын
The tank came with the back glass painted, you could select blue or black. Ive done it before, you can just apply standard emulsion paint to the outside of the back glass, works really well after a few coats.

I was using remineralized ro, but the kh is too low so now it's ro with 25% hma added, gives me a kh of about 6 for the water change.
