Even though this species of fish is so beautiful, they are not as commonly found in the hobby as other fish. This is likely because there is another connotation about Discus being one of the most difficult freshwater fish to keep. While discus fish care may require more attention than other aquarium fish, the thought of owning discus should not intimidate experienced aquarists. Very thorough & valuable content. I understand to turn off the pump during feeding time. What about the air stone and a h.o.b during feeding time? They move my water as well. This has been a great video & I will be watching it again. 🐠🐟

No the stone has little affect. The pumps move water around so quickly that food gets into all areas of the tank. Easy to know exactly where the food will be contained this way.

Various types of Java Ferns, Anubis and Bucephalandra are my go to. You just put between rocks etc. the Bucephalandra you will need to glue down with Aquarium safe super glue!

Very informative! Thanks for sharing. I have a 125 gallon with 6 gouramis (2 dwarf, 2 golden, and 2 blues). Also have 10 Cory's and 2 plecos. I've been seriously considering adding 4-6 discus but I'm concerned they will all mesh well together.

I use black because it is great for filming and I have no issues with fish hiding, but I would use glazed color background stick on unless it is an AIO tank then use blue or white. Good Luck Please like and Subscribe thank you.

What is the name of the colbalt you feed discus? Amazon has many colbalt foods on the site. Do you mix the foods or just give one variety each day? No! Just feed a wide variety of foods overall. Feed one kind in the morning, one kind in the evening etc. just keep lots of quantity foods on hand and change them up. So good for your fish to get everything they need.

Hi, I watched both part 1 and 2 and I didn't catch your idea on what number of discus to get. I have a 100 gallons tank currently cycling. I have read on Stendker website (the discus I can get here in Belgium from Germany) and they are telling to get at least 10 to 12 discus for better schooling behavior or avoiding one to bbe bullied. But I feel like they want to sell more fishs :D. What do you think ? I think too much discus kind of makes it too chaotic and not really peacefull. I liked the idea of 7 of about 4" to start. But if lose one that would be a problem so maybe 9 I don't know. My tank is planted (not much, just some at the back and mostly small plants that aren't going to rise above 10cm. And I will add about 7 corys, 30 red nose tetra, 25 amano shrimps. I have some rocks in an iwagumi style kind of too but I made sure they can swim at the front easily. Currently I just have amano shrimps and I will wait from 3 to 6 months for a full cycle to reach stable settings.

Thank you for watching. I hope you liked and subscribed as well. We had a name change so important to get those #'s up! Now Lets talk Discus. First I am happy to hear that you are being very patient. That means everything in this hobby. As far as how many Discus you can put in that tank I would not do more than 7-9. I have never lost a Discus because of the care I give to make sure water quality is perfect and ph is steady. Ph is not a number you want fluctuating but not get overly concerned about. Almost all Discus are tank raised (Unless you are buying Wild?) and the ph was likely in the sevens to low 8's. As far as bullying goes I would tell you that you will have to let that work itself out. If you add all the Discus at the same time and same sizes that should help minimize how much of that happens. Let them get it out of their systems and within a few weeks there will be a natural pecking order that will be established. Feeding time you will see who runs the tank as they will eat first and the others will hold back until the dominate one is full. I feed at both ends of the tank so the more aggressive fish can't cover that much territory and wear themselves out. Also I turn my pump off during feeding as this helps to keep food in one area of the tank where the bottom feeders can get the rest and it does not end up in you plants and rocks. You have a great plan and should really enjoy your tank. Again 7-9 Discus in that Tank will be a good number I would not do more than that. Good luck. DON'T OVERFEED! Smaller more frequent feedings is best! P.S. MAKE SURE YOU REMEMBER TO TURN PUMP BACK ON> Use your phone timer alarm that is what I do.

I sure did subscribed and thumbed up for the quality content you put out there. I agree that the idea of forgeting to put the pump back on stresses me out so much when I am changing water, haha. I am pretty sure I can't forget but nice tip for the alarm and also doing it while feeding even if I might go with auto feeder. My tap water is quite alkaline with a PH at arround 8 or more and with a tds fairly high. So I have invested in a small RO water system with an automatic valve attached to a 30 gallons can. I just got myself some "Preis" minerals in powder for Discus to remineralize the RO water, just to get all the minerals they might need and also stabelizing a better ph than 8. I will be using that only for maximum stability as I really don't know if my local water tap can change in water parameters. In Belgium we had a lot of floods this year and some people even didn't had drinking water for some days. I also have a Berkey water filter for the house that could also be used to mix with the RO water instead of minerals but the Ph out of it is still arround 8 so... will see. Also I prefer to use that instead of tap + water conditionner for chlorine as they affect the bacteria in the filters too (some conditionner starves the bacteria). I went with one canister filter + one internal filter for a total of 9kg of biological filter materiel with mechanical filtration first with medium sponge then fine sponge and wadding then bio media. As of now I have algae and some weird white goo comming out of my spider roots (a lot of it). I am looking at adding clithon snails for that. As I am afraid of small plecos, otocinclus and other ancistrus getting on the coat of the discus... :/ Again thank you very much, I will remember not to over feed them. I have a Juwel automatic feeder (smartfeed 2.0) for 3 times a day, will need to see how much to go for each feeding. I really don't want to use frozen food and rather use Tropical, Sera or Tetra discus foods. I also will have to see how to manage the water flow with the two pumps from my filters. Currently having one at each side of the tank but the direction is not easy to choose. Also because I have 2 air stones and I don't want to disturb the bubles with the flow going directly on them... He wedges them between the rocks I believe. The plants I am looking at are various Anubias, Java fern and some other non-planted plants.

I use two kinds of plants. Ones that need Substrate to get nutrients such as Crypts, swords etc. and others that draw their nutrition directly from the waste in the water such as Java Ferns and Anudias to name a few. You can research all these on line and build a tank best suited for the type of plants you like and then decide what is best for your situation.

Early in the cycle 2-50% changes and then when the water becomes stable go to 2-30%

Mystery and Nerite. They do ok as long as you have a good food supply and temp is below 86

That is way to small of a tank for Discus unless you are breeding. Low flow is best for Discus, but you really need to put your focus on another aquarium that is bigger.

From what i gather, these arent too radically different from other fish. Yes? I recall being out for heart surgery how my roomie grossly over fed. Problems. On temps, i learned this from my saltwater hobby and tried it on my freshwater setup. As you invrease temp, the metabolic rate doubles per 10 degrees C. I cranked my temp up to 82-84. Fish loved it! I did increase my flow and estimated logarithmicly by how much and adjust as needed. Thoughts on that?

Hey George, my name is Brandon. I just took over a severely under kept group of discus. There’s only four left in the group, and all of them are stunted most likely from malnourishment. I’ve been keeping fish since the mid-80s, however, these are the first discus I’ve ever kept. No. Just change the decor a bit and deworm all of them with Metronidazole that you can get from Wattley Discus. Make sure you buy some high quality foods as well and a good variety. How old are the older Discus? Get like sizes or they will pick on stunted fish. Good luck.
