GRRM isn't trying to make feudal monarchy look good or bad - He is trying to make it look how it really was. Historic people weren't idiots - Feudal monarchy is just about the only pre-modern form of government that actually works. That's why it is almost universal to pre-modern societies. The only times we see anything even vaguely approaching democracy, it only exists in very very small areas (Athens and Rome) and even then they collapse pretty quickly into non-democracy. The reason why feudal monarchy works, by the way, is because it creates a structure of law and property that is intuitive to humans. It's seldom fair, and not really justice, but at least there are rules based around ownership. And honestly that's enough for your society for a long chunk of development. The fact that monarchy is only as good as the monarch is obvious, but then monarchs tends to average out over time too. And most of the time bad kings are a problem for lords, not peasants. Peasants barely notice who is king, and kings are so disinterested in peasants that they seldom bother to tyrannize them directly. Feudalism is certainly very pre-modern, and obviously won't work in a society that is no longer agrarian. But when most of society is engaged in creating food, feudalism makes more sense than anything else. Consider - What else is even plausible when information moves extremely slowly and the most important thing is not making the right decision, but ensuring some decision is made? The great problem of democracy even in the modern era is ensuring the electorate have the information they need to render decent decisions. Before the modern period, when practically no-one could read and practically no-one had time to think about politics, this is untenable. The only democracies we see are heavily qualified franchises where the elected leaders were elected by and from the ruling classes. The only time that popular democracy was tried (Rome) it led to the ruling classes persistently murdering the pleb leaderships. If you can't democracy you can't be socialist or syndicalist, you can't even really be a fascist dictator. So all pre-moderns plump for some form of monarchy because you are stuck in a non-representative form of government and property rights are the default way to sort things out. Feudalism is the worst form of government, but since there is almost literally no other form of government available then it's also the best and only option. At least in feudalism, your society knows who the next king is supposed to be.

"GoT is pretty Anime" - I would actually love an animated version of GoT! I think the medium of animation grants so many possibilities. The actors won't age, so you can make many many seasons to get into the more detailed side plots. You can capture the whole magic system, the landscapes and world in a fantastic way. You can create over the top drama (see: Anime) and illustrate all the complicated emotions and struggles from the characters without the limitations of "real" human facial expressions. 10:40 I don't think Young Griff *knows* he's a blackfire, if he is indeed one. He's spent a lot of time with Jon, and Jon definitely thinks Aegon is the son of Rhaegar. I don't think Aegon, a child, would have been able to keep the secret for so long.
@AllTheArtsy2 жыл бұрын
The only thing we can know for sure about Young Griff is he cannot possibly be Aegon, Rhaegar and Elia's son. Because for that to work must mean that Varys knew how Aegon was going to die. Because their story is that he was switched with another baby and was stolen away from the castle, right? Conveniently, Gregor Clegane smashed Aegon's head against the wall and his skull was a bloody ruin. But what if they had somehow not been harmed? What is Jaime actually stood guard for them? What if the babes were killed a different way? People know what the royal children looked like. You can't just exchange a royal prince with any other baby and no one would know.
@lostalone93202 жыл бұрын
Babies all look pretty similar, and the royal babies were seen by very very few people. And all of those people have no reason to ever say that Aegon is still alive, even if they suspect it. Firstly, Robert will have you killed for talking that jive. Secondly, Robert will definitely have any vaguely Targy kids killed. So if you weren't a Bobby B fan, you probably don't talk about the possibility that a legitimate heir is out there. As long as Robert took the throne at all it doesn't matter what happened to the kids. Even if they were exiled, Varys can arrange for whoever to take their place once they are off in Pentos or whatever.

2:24:56 Fun/possibly not fun fact, depending on your tastes, but there is such a thing called 'perpetual stew', which is a medieval thing of having a soup that is constantly just above the cooking temperature to kill off bacteria that ingredients are routinely added to, usually served in inns and such, I guess as a way to always have a meal ready for customers coming in at any time of day. So uuhhh if that place in Flea Bottom gets a decent amount of business, there may be some perpetual stew hangin' out there that Slint and the Septon could've eventually ended up in together. Regarding the horn of winter, the magic on the tombs of the Stark kings is supposed to keep their spirits inside their tomb. It's why Ned is concerned when some of the older ones are crumbling and the swords have broken which means the magic would be broken and their spirits could escape. The reason he brought Lyanna's bones and had her statue built was so her spirit could be brought there. That's why it's extra dumb what happened in S8 of the show because if boots couldn't break through the wooden box then the Stark kings shouldn't be able to break through the magical seals of the stone tombs. The Night King only broke the wall with an ice dragon not with magic.
@TemariNaraannaschatz3 жыл бұрын
Something I also never saw mentioned was the fact that the hand Ser Alliser brought south stopped moving once it started rotting. Considering GRRM usual realstic take on fantasy things, whights shouldn't be able to move as skeltons anymore because they lack muscle tissue. The old bodies would have turned to dust and the newer onse are skeletons because they had to be brought north first, so technically there should not be any moving bodies in those crypts if the other would try to awaken them. Skeletons aren't exactly known to be strong, even if they have magic holding them together muscles.

A magical “fire,” so large that it’s light could be seen all the way from the wall. Described in the text as looking as though the sun were rising from that direction. 2. Ash described as darkening the sky, and that remand in the air for well after a year in its aftermath.

Hey fellas thanks so much for the great discussion on my beloved moon meteors, it was a lot of fun to listen to y’all kick it around. And I want to echo what Alt Shift said about how a future meteor event will be perceived; it should be described and understood in mythical terms; a second sun rising in the west or north; a great terrifying dragon or cosmic sword; bleeding stars and the like. Perhaps a maester will pipe up at some point like Cressen explaining the comet to Shireen, but the main thing is that the sun will be hidden and fire will fall from the sky. Anyway you represented my ideas very well so thank you! And yes the big simple prediction is that the upcoming LN will be caused by a meteor / comet event involving the moon. Cheers 🥂

Almost like a very small scale Tenochtitlan without the permanent stone buildings. The crannogmen probably don't have large population groups that live together but small isolated marsh villages.

I LOVE the idea that the children of the forest and the first men collaborated and built the Horn of Winter. But what if the Horn of Winter doesn't necessarily "bring the Wall down" by an earthquake or something cataclysmic but instead it just nullifies the magic woven into the Wall(and possibly other castles ie: Winterfell or Storms End) and then makes the wall vulnerable to attack from the Others. Another thing.....you mentioned the Iron swords taken from the crypts of Winterfell.....what if....WHAT IF when the swords were taken, like you suggest, the ghosts weren't locked in anymore and one or more got out.....perhaps the hooded man in Winterfell who talks to Theon is one of the ghosts that got out?!?!?!?!?

It's probably the most likely. But the only thing we can know for sure about Young Griff is he cannot possibly be Aegon, Rhaegar and Elia's son. You can't just exchange a royal prince with any other baby and no one would know.

re: Melisandre burning Shireen to resurrect Stannis and instead resurrecting Jon--this actually totally makes sense @Glidus. She keeps mistaking Stannis for the Lord of Light/Azor Ahai/Prince who was Promised. Something we see repeatedly when she asks the flames to show her LoL, they show her "only Snow," which GRRM has said he regrets capitalizing because it made it "too obvious" (so I take this as confirmation). So if her prayer to resurrect Stannis by burning Shireen involves any language like "so that 'the prince who was promised/AA/LoL' may be reborn..." (instead of "so that Stannis may...") it could totally happen. And it's pretty likely that a prayer like that would involve whatever the proper name instead of the random avatar of god or whatever on earth's birth name.

In regards to the Shireen/Melisandre theory, my guess is that Melisandre is going to burn someone else to ressurect Jon, and Shirren won't burn until the end of the book when Stannis is desperate enough to defeat the White Walkers. It makes perfect narrative sense having Stannis being the one to issue the command, especially if it's to defeat the Others, because he told Davos in one of the earlier books that he would be willing to "sacrifice one child to the flames to save a million from the dark". Melisandre doing it to save Jon takes away from this characterisation.

Jon Con's Greyscale symbolises his homosexuality in a society that would look down on him for it.
@RikkaP3 жыл бұрын
So Loras will be the first to get it from him? I am not sure how on board Westeros is with homosexuality, really. I don't think we really had a glimpse. Jaime seems pretty cool with Loras ("When the sun has set, no torch can compare" or something? Had to retranslate from my edition... Great). Still sad how Loras (one of my fav. side characters) was butcherd in the show. I always had a feeling that greyscale was a bit like the white walkers on a personal scale for Jon Con. Something he ignores/ keeps hidden because of more pressing issues and that will blow up in his face later. Maybe instead of being woken from stone instead a dragon will turn to stone...
@sglauney Жыл бұрын
@RikkaP westeros is decidedly not on board with homosexuality, its considered a sin by the church and is one of the principle crimes Loras is being punished for. its important to note that Dorne's tolerance of gay sex is compared to their tolerance of bastards, indicating its unorthodox and unique to their society (compared to the rest of westeros). although it seems commonly known among court that Renly is gay, that is far different from being out of the closet; Renly still married a woman for politics and bloodline. Jamie being cool with Loras (and that sun setting quote is surprisingly empathetic) would appear to be the exception that proves the rule. this is in line with the period of time and place westeros culture seems to be based off (medieval europe) where homosexuality was seen as an abomination and only practiced in secret or in more tolerant areas of the world. i like your theory abt what greyscale means to joncon, i always thought it was a metaphor for him burning out; joncon is tirelessly working to put his dead lovers (most likely not real) kid on the throne and its figuratively and literally eating away at him
@silverstorm37299 ай бұрын
@@sglauney Although I agree with the assessment that Westeros is homophobic, I wanna add that the Middle Ages lasted roughly a century, and the Early Middle Ages didn't really have a problem with homosexuality as we know it - sexuality was more understood in terms of dominant vs submissive partners; with dominant partners being venerated, and submissive partners being shamed. This seems to be a hold-over from the Greek and Roman eras before. I don't think GRRM is widely inspired by that period of the Middle Ages, but some inspiration could explain the "open secret" nature of Loras's gayness - sexuality was defined back then more as an act you partook in rather than a part of who you were, so it was overlooked more than we realize nowadays, as long as it didn't cause any problems with a person's ability to get married and "do their duties." Loras being a kingsguard especially would make his gay status actually be more tolerated, I think - he's sworn off marriage and children anyway so it's a non-issue from a feudalistic standpoint. Of course, I think GRRM made Westeros homophobic as an intentional statement about feudalistic society, so I don't really know how much of actual history he's taking from and how much is exaggerated to make a point. I never thought of JonCon's greyscale in that light, that's a really insightful way of looking at it. I used to think JonCon's greyscale was kind of a out-of-left field story element but as a metaphor for his grief and subsequent self-destructiveness, it makes so much sense.
@sglauney9 ай бұрын
@@silverstorm3729 totally agree with your points abt the difference regarding the early middle ages and abt the kingsguard being a representation of quiet acknowledgement of sexual identities while still treating them as something not to be talked abt or acted on! to me the homophobia feels more overt and based on the middle ages, but the political intrigue around sexuality and it's status as something that can be worked around but not openly discussed (shoutout "if i am served fish i will eat it" abt laenor) is definitely an earlier historical period's opinion being added in to make the story more interesting and to enable dialogue around gay characters (gotta love gay characters) thank you abt the joncon comment, i think his grayscale is a kind of left field story element but if it serves an interesting metaphorical purpose (the one i think it is or otherwise) and makes the story more interesting without being totally unbelievable than it's fair game. the reveal is well written too imo

He became too focused on the prophecy and forgot to secure the politics first. If he really was convinced of this, and knew that it had to be his child and there must be 3, he should have secured the realm first. What did he gain by running off with a high lord's daughter already engaged to another high lord? What did he gain by letting his mad father run the kingdom to the ground? If Rhaegar had just sat and had a think--- he should have swiftly deposed his father first and become king. Then secured a divorce or some other marriage settlement with Elia and given her and Sunspear all honors. If it just had to be Lyanna, he should have spoken to Lord Rickard and to Robert and broken their marriage pact. Instead he was prophecy prophecy prophecy and as a result, he died, his other 2 children died, and his PTWP was left to grow unaware of who he is.

I agree with "2 magic swords > 1 unwieldly magic sword" but disagree with Ice needing to be reforged - the centuries-old Ice belonging to House Stark, that was melted down into Oathkeeper & Widow's Wail, is ITSELF a "replacement" heirloom for an ANCIENT "Ice" (which i suspect was LITERALLY made of ice, as stolen from or gifted by White Walkers of yesteryear). Reforging Ice seems more of a POLITICAL move than a Magic Sword Thing, a gesture by surviving Lannisters in reparations to surviving Starks to cement that TWoT5K is well & truly over in the minds of smallfolk.

@acooknamed_Rishi if he does, he might not want to: "fire & blood" is the root of all Valyrian sorcery and they DID go through their enslaved VERY QUICKLY. The Faceless Men's gift of Mercy started as a "gift" FOR A REASON. Burning/boiling people/vats of blood by dragon or volcano could legit be a key component to forging valyrian dragonsteel. Even with an apocalypse coming, i don't see any of the current Team Living characters being willing to sacrifice people in such ways/use blood magic.
@lostalone93202 жыл бұрын
You pretty clearly don't need vats of human blood to forge Valyrian steel. You might need a drip here and there, because there is a magic component, but nothing more than that. Sorry for being late to the part by several months, but what if/when Melisandre burns Shireen at Winterfell to bring upon lightbringer - instead of reawakening a sword, she unknowingly reawakens Jon instead. Another way of GRRM playing with prophecy. Maybe after Stannis takes Winterfell, they take Jon’s body with them to give him a proper burial in the crypts. Not that I think he needs to be close proximity, but I think Stannis is honorable and would task his men to bury Jon at home. Imagine Stannis is defending Winterfell from the dead. The battle is almost over. They’re losing. They’re surrounded and are maybe the last several people alive. White Walkers about to finish the job. Stannis has no more options, no more tactics. Melisandre tells Stannis they will all die unless, they bring Lightbringer to full strength by sacrificing the one he loves most. He only allows the sacrifice of Shireen as he feels they’re all about to die anyway, and death by fire may be a better death than the long night. Melisandre does her ritual AND…cue the start of Jon’s first POV chapter of the book. He wakes up in his casket. He leaves the crypt, goes outside, confused, as he recollects how he was murdered and maybe is in hell as he is now walking amongst the wreckage of what used to be Winterfell.

I'm surprised I never see a theory about how Westeros was originally full of snow all the way to not far north of Dorne. There is a BUNCH of parallels about the north and south that are way too weird. The whole Garth Greenhand thing would have been about how they pushed the "winter" further north, turning the land green. It explains the messed up seasons; the cold is still trying to retake its place. As such the ice wall was built to safekeep those north of it, in agreement with those they made the pact with south of it.

1:54:02 I'm really hoping it's Catelyn/ stoneheart who resurrects Jon and I recon how that could come about, geographically speaking is that the brotherhood learn from Jamie or in spight of him about fake Arya's wedding to Ramsey, they don't believe him that it's not her, they go looking for her at winterfell, hear she escaped and went to stay with Jon on the wall and they get there to find Jon's corpse on ice, we get a combination of Melisandre and Thoros too. And via Melisandres or perhaps even Jamie's POV we could see and follow all of this. And if they all go north they'll need to pass through the Neck and grey water watch where Howland was sent a copy of Robbs will, and stoneheart is refusing to crown a bastard and then boom, we hear of Jon's true parentage, or its hinted at. But maybe that then Dies with Catelyn and no one else knows and Jon decides to Bury her as a Stark on winterfells crypts which is where he finds out whatever is urging him there to discover the parentage for himself?

1:16:45 This is a long one, but some etymology of the word Crannog may explain the following - here’s some context. Schwifty is talking about Greywater Watch and hypothesising that it doesn’t actually exist. Funny enough, a crannog is essentially a dwelling on the shoreline that becomes its own little island if big enough. These are raised above the water by a few feet and were relatively easy to build. The earliest evidence of their construction is 3600BC. These crannogs were made of wood and more advanced ones had stone embankments and pathways. As the years went on and man moved from dwelling in the swamps to constructing villages and settlements, crannogs were able to be built during war or out of necessity. A number of crannogs have had the wood dated and found to have been cut down between 537-547. During these years there were massive volcanic eruptions which caused volcanic winters and crop failure, particularly in Ireland, Scandinavia, Mesopotamia and China, the Justinian plague spread across Europe killing 35-55% of the population and collapsing the Eastern Roman Empire. It’s interesting that so many wild dwellings were built during this time, possibly because of crop failure or because of the plague but it is evident that these crannogs could be constructed quickly in a necessary situation. Eventually after disuse crannogs become overgrown and become their own small island. The comparison I’m trying to make here is that the crannogmen and by extension Greywater Watch, have a connotation to rapid wooden dwellings made close to the water in swamps, these could be moved and are created from local materials very quickly. So maybe Greywater Watch does move. Maybe it moves away from sight, disassembled and reassembled or completely remade elsewhere.

I think they are camouflaged well enough to look like the surrounding area if you are not used to seeing buildings like theirs, and they can weigh anchor and move periodically to ensure that pinning them down is even harder. GRRM seems to have written them to have a deep understanding and appreciation for the environment they live in, so it makes sense to me that they live in harmony with their surroundings.

Shireen is getting burned to give Stannis victory much like in the show. Only it works, Stannis kicks ass, takes names, but his daughter is gone, and his quest towards the iron throne just... falls apart. Oh, and he totally kills his wife for killing his daughter, he's going to kin slay I think.

My fave thing is Sansa just being normal😂 Like shes learning politics and stuff and I really hope she meets up with all of them again because IMAGINE You see your siblings again and like - Your little sister is in a death cult to be a shapeshifting assassin - your little brother is feral and probably communicates by growling or sth - Your other brother is paralyzed and also a fucking tree wizard You hold out hope, maybe MAYBE your bastard brother is normal, I mean hes just at the nights watch right? What could go wrong? Nope. You see him again and he somehow has white hair now? Maybe its stress? Nope he was MURDERED and is a fucking Zombie. Also apparently a Targaryen?!? Istg I would be like "Shit I miss Littlefingers bullshit"

3:04:11 So comets can absolutely have irregular orbits. Generally, orbital comets don’t last very long on an atmospheric scale. They can be knocked off course by chance of gravitational interactions such as big boy Jupiter. But could be possible to see the same comet twice in a year. It may not be quick to do a full orbit, maybe 30 years was the last sighting, but then as it gets closer to the sun and passes you it speeds up due to the suns gravity, when it passes its perihelion (closest position to the sun) it begins slowing, and depending on planetos’ orbit, could maybe see it on its way back.

Because I can't restrain myself, and as you both find the motives and timeline presented in the show to be beyond belief, an alternate possibility for the burning of Shireen: The scaley princess (along with several other eligible ladies) marries Aegon Vi as part of a peace deal with Stannis. They share a chaste kiss on the lips at the wedding (her mother specifically only kisses her on her unblemished cheek). Soon the whole royal "family” of Aegon and his noble brides are stricken with grey-scale/plague. Connington (who would have been desperately, bitterly opposed to the deal with Stannis and the marriage) seizes on the possibility that Shireen is a carrier (as the wildlings believe) and denounces her and Stannis. As the king is infected and the outbreak spreading, Stannis sees no choice but to acquiesce to calls to burn Shireen and and other infected (not the king) as part of a combined, twisted, ritual of grisly public sanitation, and appeasement of the Red God (who the court of Aegon will be following and pushing on the realm as a reformation). Of course, Connington suspects all along that it is he who has somehow infected his boy king. When it inevitably comes out that he has been hiding an infection all this time, king, court, and Stannis will jump back to the conclusion that the common wisdom that survived childhood greyscale is non-transmissible was correct, and that is was Connington who brought the plague. It will be ambiguous, but we will suspect that it was actually Shireen. Conninginto will die the most defeated man in history, having failed the two Targaryen princes he loved and doomed them both to early deaths. Just as bad, he will live only long enough to see Stannis Baratheon rise to take his place as the ailing Aegon’s Hand.

Ned and Arthur Dayne probably fought because the Kingsguard planned to take Lyanna and Jon to Essos to raise him as Rhaegar's son and eventually challenge Robert. Most likely, Rhaegar's last order to them was to do that if he himself would lose to Robert, and Jon was his contingency plan to continue the royal line. Ned of course couln't allow this and wanted to take Jon to Winterfell instead and hide his identity. So both sides wanted to protect Jon, but they had very different ambitions with Jon. That's why they fought.
