Ok enough with unseriousness, I hadn't listened to Speak Now in it's entirety since prior to Midnights being released but I listened to the album last night and I've decided that everything I'm wearing this week will be purple. As a man I never stopped to think about how much purple wardrobe I own. 😅 I. AM. BEYOND. READY. FOR. THIS. ALBUM. I don't know how many long term Swifties do this but with the rerecords I love to think back on the person I was when these albums were originally released. With Speak Now I was so goddamn angsty and wrapped up in my Twilight obsession. Fall Out Boy and Hayley Williams being featured on the vault songs is SUCH! A! FUCKING! VIBE! All of the vault songs being over four minutes is also very concerning! I truly do not believe she will change a thing with Better Than Revenge. I'm currently in my Jane Austen era so if When Emma Falls in Love was inspired by Emma my hair might fall out. Friday cannot come soon enough! 💜💜💜

I'm studying Emma in English at the moment, and i really think that Jane Austen's book fits so well with themes that Taylor writes about. The whole book follows Emma matchmaking other people, she's insistent that she will NEVER GET MARRIED, there are a few mishaps with men trying to court her and her rejecting them, and then it turns out that Knightley (who is 16 years older, yes, an old friend of her father's as well. and also her brother in law but whatever) has been in love with her the whole time (since she was 13) and oh my goodness Emma realises that she's loved HIM the whole time too! There is also a theme of him being her only critic, the person who keeps her in line. Also, i *personally* believe that this book's purpose was to critique Austen's society around marriage and courting and conforming to gendered values (and also the fact that it was accepted and normalised for a 37 year old man to be with a 21 year old). Possibly Taylor could be relating to Emma believing she'll never find love as well, watching others find their match (maybe it's BOTH Emma Stone and Emma Woodhouse... lol). so i definitely think that if she drew inspiration from Emma Woodhouse and this book it would be an amazing song. Hoping i'm right but either way im SO excited to find out!! Edit to add: how did i forget that a HUGE theme of the novel Emma is transformation and coming of age... which i think is a strong theme in speak now and Taylor growing through girlhood and entering adulthood. Emma is a bildungsroman (coming of age/transformation) and i really think that Speak Now, as an album, is too

I’m rereading Emma right now and a lot of this makes sense…it’s hard for Emma to even see herself for who she is (kind of an Elizabeth Bennet “I never knew myself” moment) until she has spent her time and energy giving others what she thinks they want and need (people pleasing) and chasing the wrong guy (the one she is “supposed” to be with according to the standards) to finally accept/realize that it’s ok for her to have her cake and eat it too (Knightley 💗). Even if her father forbids the indulgence of rich treats and sweets. 😄

If Emma is about Jane Austen's Emma, then it doesn't fit because Mr. Knightley is the best Austen male lead, anyone can fight me any time on this. Emma becomes a better person because Knightley is a good person who doesn't let her get away with any of her privileged, sometimes downright cruel shit. And Emma doesn't feel the need to get married because she is a wealthy heiress. She has more freedom being the de facto miss of her father's household than a man's wife. She has the means to keep being single. If it's about Emma Woodhouse at all, maybe it's about being too full of herself and not realizing that she makes the biggest mistakes about other people. She is cruel to Jane, to Ms. Bates, and dismissive of Harriett. It's not until she let's go of believing herself the smartest person in their small town that she starts to be a better person.

@@AllTheArtsy ooh, i like all these points and the idea that it’s about realising she’s selfish and growing as a person. i do still think that it could fit in another way though; it depends on the interpretation. in my class’s reading we discuss Knightleys guidance as a form of making Emma conform to her society by changing the way she is to be with him (also the fact that he’s been ‘guiding her’ since she was thirteen). imo Emma is a satire used to critique the regency era. But, that’s just my interpretation, i like how we can see things differently and discuss

It’s definitely painful at times to read this book and see how Emma prides herself on her good deeds and even her statement that she’ll never marry is presumptuous because really she has no idea. She even said she’d have to meet someone as charming as herself to fall in love with. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 But who knows…I’m super excited to hear this song!! The only other Emma Woodhouse connection could be that the love of your life was right in front of your eyes the whole time but you were too caught up in other things to actually see…until the moment you do see. ??? A stretch perhaps! 😬

Just in case it happens I’m commenting this here- I had a dream last night that we got an extra 7 songs (battle was one of them) and the same day she announced somethjng to do with Lover. And in the booklet of the sntv cd there was similar photos to lover photoshoot and somehow the pictures tied into the lover era and I remember in the dream I was mind blown by some really obvious Easter eggs. Prolly not gonna happen but just in case Edit; last time I had a TS dream, it was 3 weeks before midnights announcement (August 6 to be exact!) and I saw her announce the album at an award show and released it the 3rd week of October. I JUST HAD TO PAUSE FOR A SEC OMG so when you guys were talking about castles crumbling i realised that paramore has brick by boring brick where they talk about being in a fantasy world and hayley is saying they need to bury the castle. Since hayley and taylor are close irl they may have spoken about this and related to one another since they were both young when speak now and brand new eyes came out. loved hearing your thoughts!!! 💜💜💜 i don't think she'll change any lyrics in better than revenge bc in her announcement post she said the songs from this album are full of "brutal honesty" and "unfiltered diaristic confessions" so even if she doesn't agree with the message of the song anymore, it reflects how she felt at the time. also it's kind of a time capsule of how teen girls thought of 'the other girl' at that age and in that time period (late 2000s/early 2010s) also im SO excited to hear her mature vocals singing last kiss, especially those really low notes that she couldn't fully hit at that age. her lower register has been BEAUTIFUL these last few albums

Oh I'm really excited for Castles Crumbling since I love Paramore's Brick by Boring Brick (the song about burying the castle). The song also talks about a girl living in her fantasy world which just fits Taylor especially in the vibe of Speak Now. Also excited for When Emma Falls in Love! I didn't think much about it until the Jane Austen reference. Clueless is one of my favorite movies and it's loosely based on Emma so that really excites me if the connection is real! So excited for this album!
