Just wanted to say that I don't want to ruin anyone's genuine enjoyment of Disgaea 6. I'm sure there are a lot of good qualities to the game and if you're loving it then more power to you. This is just my own initial opinion. It might be that I pick it up in the future should we eventually get it released on a different platform. For now, thank you all for the support, I'll be looking at some other games and I'm streaming a lot more frequently, so come find me on twitch if you're interested!

I knew what it was when I saw the 3D models and the load times between special attacks. Good thing all the other Disgaea games have almost infinite playability

I suspect the game is more intended for the PS4 than the Switch. Hopefully we'll see a PS4 (or PC) release here in the west if NISA have any sense.

One thing I will note on the performance. I am definitely having problems on the big switch, it's even worse on switch lite. That aside, there is a performance option in the settings for Quality (default) Balance and Performance. Didn't notice a visual difference moving toward the performance setting, but it did help frames a good deal. Definitely not acceptable to do a console release where it's almost mandatory to lower settings, but it's there regardless. It did also improve some of the input lag issues. Not super impressed with what it has shown so far, but time will tell on full release. New and hidden systems from the demo to break the game. Fingers crossed on it getting better going forward, and better performance on an update.

It also makes me sad. I loved 4 and 5. But playing 6's demo was more an endurance test than an enjoyable experience, I really don't know whether to buy it or not, because this could be the last disgaea game if it doesn't sell good... It really makes me sad

Did you saw, that there is a performance setting in the menu? If you set that to balanced or performance (its on quality by default), you get much more fps.. That might resolve the menu input eating But yeah... this game is very unoptimized. FE Three Houses for example also uses 3D models in an Tactics RPG and it looks great and has no performance issues while doing that... So yeeeahh

Three houses Doesnt look great, the entire game has bad textures even on the human models.

They got rid of several classes, revenge mode and Overlodes ,marichange and squad team attacks and weapon skills and the capture mechanics but on the plus side now you can up spell proficiency in the skill shop so it’s easier to increase range

Hey, about the graphics and the game processing, you can change the graphics in the settings, it is "ultra" by default. Also, I saw some people on reddit saying that the demo is at a couple versions before the actual game (japan version already launched), and the full game seem pretty decent.

Definitely waiting on an eventual PC release, or if we end up getting the PS4 version in the West. The performance issues are absolutely due to extremely poor optimization

I was worried about this one. Too many signs of chaos at the studio while trying to jump to 3D for its own sake. As for the writing I did hear they lost most their best writers so had little hope there. Still interested but even more cautiously then before. There are lots of strategy games to try if the play-station or pc versions do not happen. so you should find something to stream or make guides for.

Supposedly the Demo is running on something like v1.05 of the game and the full game will be something like v1.16, and somewhere in between there was some amount of optimization patching. Apparently the extra big numbers were to desensitize players to huge numbers so that new players wouldn't be as intimidated by postgame content, since they were trying to make D6 a sort of "baby's first" Disgaea and people being intimidated by postgame has apparently been a long running issue in the series. But yeah, overall it seems disappointing compared to the other Disgaea titles available on the Switch.

i've played an hour or two of 6's, the big numbers right at the start was my biggest turnoff, alongside the awful framerate. they really missed a chance of making a "0 to hero" character, they explain that Zed was a zombie and all, on the same hierarchy as the fcking prinnies, and that really got me hyped up, to make him start at lv. 1 and get unbelievably stronger but the game already starts with him so goddamn strong, stoy and gameplay wise, just a huge turnoff and the dialogue, ugh, i closed the game after the 10th joke about zombies being brainless and never opened it again

dan the bad frame rates.. guess ill hold out until the next release of the 7th entrie 😂😂😂 was looking forward to playing this, but holy hell if the game fps is this low , grinding endgame is gonna be super super long, guess baal can wish this round

Ironically (to me at least) the 3D models actually make the game look cheaper for some reason. The complete version on ps5 also costs way too much.

i didnt touch the demo even though i downloaded it. man im lucky my first entry to disgaea was the version for the ds because if u can play that.... u can play any version. plus it frame rate being shitty is a problem indeed but for the amount of time i have been playing fighting games online bad frame rate is the last thing im worried about

Being a Nintendo exclusive in the West was a terrible idea, the framerate for the full game IS better.... but not really by much. I bought the game cause I wanted to support the studio, and I mean, it's Disgaea, how do you screw that up? Well, the first character you get seems like a joke, and not a 'haha' joke like Red Magnus, but an 'are you serious?' kind of joke. Also the stats are weird, everyone starts out with like 20k stats, but upgrading your weapons or equipment is still only an upgrade of like 50, so items feel irrelevant, just buy all the boots to make the levels, which have almost no enemies to even fight, go faster.... I don't mind leveling up quicker though, it was kind of weird in Disgaea 5 beating the entire story and being at level 200 out of 9999. But overall, the game is extremely disappointing, when the best thing I can say about a game is that it's funny seeing a character based on Rushia the v-tuber having boing boing, you know they did something wrong.

I'm still probably going to give this game a shot. The biggest turn off to me is the number bloat. The only thing big numbers achieve is making it harder to parse. I really don't like that change. It's fine for numbers to get silly big as you progress to make that progression feel impactful. But starting off with huge numbers is just pointlessly making the game harder to parse at the one time you want the game to be the most readable. The beginning. When a new player is still learning the basics.

I notice more and more people complain about fps. Like dudes in the old games before patches and updated became a thing people simply happy. Having hell of fun even with who knows how many bugs and cut/remove content. The plot is always the same story with a lot people nothing beats the 1st or og plot is nothing new after first movie/book/anime season is bad or hated but weirdly fanmade story is liked more. hopefully you can rekindle enjoyment for disgaea at a later time.

The frame rate is bad cause it's the demo friend. The Disgaea 5 demo had the same issue till the game.

I was happy that the devs finally decided to go 3D, for better animations. But damn that demo was a disappointment. Attacks and skills feel weak. The framerate is shameful, there is nothing on screen that justify having such terrible performances. The controls felt clunky and weird (D-pad to turn the characters around instead of auto lock ? What kind of control scheme is that ?). And their whole trip about the numbers... what's the point of having 20k attack at level 1 if a new weapon simply give +10 ? It looks ridiculous and it's pointless.

You might be right, but I’ve played a lot of Disgaea over the years and this was more of the same. The dialog and writing is getting worse and now the visual style doesn’t appeal to me either. I just think it’s time I moved on. I’m not a person that has any loyalty to a game series even if I once loved it. There are lots of good games to play out there after all. Thank you for watching!

I disagree on 3D models being incapable of being as expressive as 2D models in regards to over the top animation, there is Guilty Gear or Dragon Ball FighterZ as a counter example of how to do it right. And while they are bigger franchises with more resources and experiencied artists on 3D modeling, it still shows that lack of weight behind animations is not an issue of a 3D artstyle, rather a poor usage of it's tools and limitations.

You’re absolutely right about that, and Arc System Works are masters of the craft. However, they’re the only ones that spring to mind that can make 3D animation that is as expressive (or more so) than a lot of sprite based animation. The 3D models in terms of their appearance aren’t really a problem, rather what we lose because of the switch to them. Stiffer animation, less creative and weighty attacks, worse frame rate, less units on a map and a lack of class variety because they’ve had to make all the new models from scratch are all worse symptoms of the change. Speaking of Guilty Gear, I’ll probably be streaming that soon.

The first one is the only one with a well crafted story in my opinion. It’s very focussed and very self-aware. 4 has fun characters but not much of a story. Disgaea 5 has the best gameplay.

I agree with Voxel Star on this. Just recently beat 4. It's got great characters. But the actual storyline those characters are going through is pretty bland. 1 probably has the best over all story. But it's also the hardest to play mechanically due to quality of life etc. I think over all, I prefer 4 as a gaming experience, and it's probably the best Disgaea game over all to me. But 1 had the best writing.

So my thoughts on the points. 1. I agree. The game is badly optimized. This is also due to the limited hardware capabilities of the switch. The next pokemon games will either look horrible or have low framerates. I blame the switch here for being a bad gaming console. It has fun games, that probably would run better on pc or other consoles. 2. I agree yet again, however to put it into words, stretch and squash techniques and typical 2d animation techniques are better suited for the series. The point of "hold frames for a certain amount of frames and cut to the end action" is correct, but also is not an innate problem with the game being 3d. This technique is achievable in almost any animation form, and is simply there to convey impact through. This is achieved through 2 principles of animation, timing and exaggeration ( examples in this vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3XUm3yafpmVfJY ). 3. It was a dumb choice to limit the amount of characters on screen due to rendering. 4. I like the charm of the 3d models. I feel it's very subjective to interpret the style. 5. The writing has always been kind of bad imo. It's due to the nature of the disgaea series. I think tropes aren't bad when used correctly. Disgaea 5 threw in as many tropes as possible and acted on them in certain ways that made the gameplay enjoyable. Then again, I don't really play disgaea for the story, but rather the over the top action. 6. The numbers being bigger is to exaggerate the feeling of the game. The balance stays relatively the same. The stats are less effective compared to previous games, however they scale faster. Meaning, the game's core gameplay doesn't really change. It's not a big deal, and I don't understand why people think it is.
