As much as I want to stay optimistic, I can't say I exactly feel enthused about "Disgaea 6" right now. There's just a lot of points going on that seem either iffy or misplaced. The biggest stickler, clearly, is the shift from 2D sprites to fully 3D models. As much as I would have wished for the series to remain mostly 2D, the series has always experimented with adding 3D elements (to mixed results) so it was inevitable this was going to happen eventually. While well done 2D sprites will always look amazing, what can be done with them has always been restricting, much less how expensive and time consuming it is to make them. 3D models allow for more expression and are, relatively, much cheaper. With NIS's financial troubles of late, yeah, it's to be expected. But just something about them here doesn't sit well with me and I can't quite put my finger on what exactly. The models are fine enough, though the lack of a solid outline makes them seem weird, especially on the maps in contrast to the more solid environments. The animations definitely seem to lack a certain amount of weight and flair to them as well, at least from what has been shown so far. One thing I noticed that really started bugging me was that none of the shown skill animations have natural transitions (like an enemy getting launched or the skill user floating/jumping off-screen). They just fade to black when going from the map to the animation field and back. The older games also have some examples of this so maybe other skill animations in "Disgaea 6" might do proper transitions but it's another area of skepticism for now. And yeah, the whole stat thing has me rather worried. "Disgaea" has always had crazy numbers for stats and they have progressively gotten larger with each new entry, but they were never really the point of the series. "Disgaea 6" purposely inflating and emphasizing them kind of feels like the devs listened to the most surface level points people say about the series and decided to double down on it. That's not exactly encouraging for me. Who knows, maybe all this worry is for nothing and the game will turn out fine. Too bad I won't be able to see for myself though since NISA decided to just not localize the PS4 version of the game. Meaning, even if I wanted to, I'm just don't have the chance to do so. I'm sorry but I'm still really peeved about that decision. My only hope at this point is that they are waiting for NIS to announce a PS5 version of the game but no matter how I cut it, it's a baffling dumb decision. It just unnecessarily hurts the goodwill with the fanbase and cuts down on potential sales, something NIS really needs right now, especially for their top selling series.

Tell the truth man don't let the crowd sway you, Disgaea 5 was awesome 2D anime animations, 3D/2D does not work for disgaea that's more Lapis graphics and a step back, when you as a fan of the series goes oh hey I don't mind the 3D you kill 2D off you should be a shamed of yourself. You are the reason games like suikoden and chrono trigger bit the dust. Cause then they get the wrong idea oh people want 3D lets change the game and it wont be the same and guess what too bad we ran out of money that was our ticket out due to almost bankrupt on mobile disgaea and had to reboot.

@@NoblesseOblige-17 I do, few others also plus my cousin and nephew we had a discussion and compared it to street fighter from Capcom. 2D game that improved over the years, reaching the peak at snk vs capcom 2 with 48 characters, svc chaos 35, SF alpha 3 had 38 characters for a game alone in 2D then what happened Capcom changed to 3D/2D lost a huge roster of characters and street fighter V is pure crap the fighting in that game has dead zones its broke. We compared disgaea to that it's a step back its like giving you the best you can offer then watering it down you might not care but a lot of others do I even see people saying they may skip it I am one of those people lol even my nephew sorry but trailer once I noticed the bloat I cannot take it seriously betcha anything badass overlord isn't gonna be in it nintendo friendly no curse words.

My initial impressions was that a lot of the charm of the game was lost with the move to the 3D models. While I certainly don't hate it as much now after having a while to get used to it, I still consider it a bit of a downgrade. Still looking forward to the sequel regardless, its looking as though the game will remain as mechanically strong as Disgae 5.

My only issue with the animations from the TGS footage is how it seems many of the attacks are now confined to what I tend to jokingly call the "Special Attack dimension" rather than on the map itself. Even something as simple as a Heal spell appears to now necessitate a cut to black and opening into a new scene, only for then another cut to black once finished and THEN return to the map. Sure those kind of specials have always been a highlight in Disgaea, but usually they always balanced with more snappier "on-the-moment" kind of attacks, or usually a combination of both methods (Like throwing the enemy into a separate arena, beat the living crud out of it, and then punch it so hard that it smashes back into the map). This time around since most attacks seem to be disconnected from the map itself, it makes some of the special lose a bit of the flow, making them less snappy specially when chained together. Another issue I find, is that all the attacks they showed happen to be ones that, since they teleport you to another area, do not require free space in the map to be used. For example you would THINK the special shown from one of the main units where she jumps and skips atop a row of enemies would end with her landing on the other side of the row, but even if the animation does it, it just cuts back to the unit standing on the same panel she originally was. This kind of removes a bit of the complexity of having to plan when to use an special, as it could sometimes require to have a free space on the map or could risk placing one of your units in a difficult position. Of course, this could always just be a coincidence and there ARE attacks like this that just hasn't been show, but it just struck me as odd, that's all.

I've never noticed the red thing till you mentioned it, I feel like this game's story will be in tone between 1 and 3. 5 was more or less serious and it's usually a light silly after serious. As you mentioned Zed is a child like Laharl or Mao was so that's my speculation on the theme. The Girl reminds me of Razberyl and I think she'd be somewhere between that and Flonne or Artina.

This will be the first Disgaea game that I've gotten the collectors edition for. I'm really excited this. Just finished 5 and I'm working my way backwards until this releases

Really wish they had stayed with the digeaes 5 sprite style. It is unfortunate how sprites are becoming rare these days like how all animated films are moving to cg instead of hand drawn, there is a charm you just can not get using any other method.

agree on the toughts about 3 being similar to 1. I think 6 will be a new and fresh feel (hope so!) my fave besides 1, is 4! absolutely loove valvatorez! (and the power of sardines!!!) 2 is awesome as well. i'm having trouble adjusting to the 3d sprites, but it looks good honestly. here's hoping for a great new addition in one my favorite series of all time!

Disgaea 5 is the best disgaea game hands down. The protagonist is better than adel and the escalating story is by for the biggest the series has ever seen and will probably never be topped by any disgaea series going forward. I feel sorry for the dev crew NIS Because they are going to have a hard time topping the perfection that is d5.

D5 is a cascade of generic shounen tropes, like yelling one's own moves multiple times, a woman being little more than a plot device for a brooding MC, etc. The gameplay is fine, but the story actively hinders it from being "perfection", especially considering how until D5, they had no problem actively defying clichés instead of just playing them straight.

Jorenz Hellman Gloucester if you like the shounen troupes and cliches then it is perfect. I don’t see a problem with liking shounen action troupes dialed to infinity. I absolutely love that stuff.

I'm feeling more negative about the game honestly but I still plan on getting it day 1 as of right now. I personally don't like the 3D models. I also don't like that certain units take more spaces. It was fine with the giant characters in 4 and 5 but the normal dragon unit taking more than one space bugs me. I will get used to them but I just much rather prefer the old sprites. The roster of generic units has been cut drastically. It's lower than even Disgaea 1. And I imagine there will be more sold as DLC than in the base game. The story feels like it will be incredibly bare-boned and I'm guessing it'll be very short. There's a black screen before every skill and during the skill animations you can't see the damage input building up which takes you out of the action. The quality of life changes, new mechanics, and new generic unit designs (only 4 which is incredibly low) are really the only compliments I can currently give the game. Well, the Mecha Girl has a derpy face but I still like her. At the end of the day, I honestly feel like people that buy this game at full retail price will be ripped off. Spending $60 on a game that currently feels like a $35-$40 game. I am glad the game is coming out in Japan months before the English release so we can get all the full details of what's to come from it. I really want to support NIS/NISA because Disgaea is my favorite game series of all time, but I really don't like the idea of them using the games as quick cashgrabs and not actually plan on making the games the best they can be. If waiting an extra year could fix every issue I currently have, then I would happily wait.

Enjoy your Lapis X Labyrinth game shouldn't be taking chances on by going backwards in graphic quality when they failed on their mobile division and had to reboot which almost put them in bankrupt status and taking a chance on this is a very bad idea I am a disgaea fan and I hate the 3D/2D look I am skipping, lucky Suikoden reboot in Eiyuden Chronicle I'll have something to play, you can't give us disgaea 5 with really good 2D visuals then crap out a game with Lapis X labyrinth graphics even my friends who play disgaea are laughing at this. I don't know who is running NIS but they are making very terrible choices.

Thanks for the video. The saying "change is good" should be "change is for some way good". I agree with the 3d insight. It feels souless on expression of the characters. Theres no real impact on the skills or something mindblowing. It skill flow looks unreal and slow .t ThE 2d artwork is amazing that got me into the series. I hope they give this game much love and attention for the new content.

My problem is that they didn't change the class designs. Since they are very close to bankruptcy, they reused spirits but now that they moved to 3d why not change the class designs? Why make them look the same but 3d if you created all the models from scratch, especially since one of the biggest features in disgaea and other startegy RPGs is the custom characters? i think this is a missed opportunity

But they are in such a big trouble, that they weren't sure they could finish Disgaea 6, and they know that if disgaea 6 is cancelled, they go bankrupt. Its THAT bad.

Disgaea is the only franchise with that type of gameplay, and NIS games in general have no other similar games in this area. They have no competition, which also means they have no replacement.

I'm disappointed in the jump to 3D because they don't understand how to animate it to still read the same anime style we've grown to know and love. It's a problem that all the 3d modeled anime has. I don't understand why. Overwatch was partly as big a success as it was because people got hooked on the characters, and how Blizzard achieved the characterization of a lot of the characters was from using classic animation techniques like smearing and keyframes. I associate snappy impactful moves with the franchise and fear that'll be lost as the animators in Japan don't seem to understand you still need to go about the animations as you would on traditional animation.

I totally disagree about Mao. Then again I might not be seeing the story elements that are obvious to you... I notice that I often see things from angles critics don't. to me Disgaea 1 was about introducing the whole idea of "Netherworld" as a back drop. With demon kings falsely chocking on Black doughnuts and vassals that use lethal means to wake their "masters" and such it sets the mode that its a place of chaos and Laharl has to get respect so he can rule over others as is his right by being the late kings son and actually powerful. To me Disgaea 3 was all about exploring why the Netherworlds got so Ass backwards. The numerous visits to the Heart bank and how Heroes and Demon Lords require the other to exist to maintain balance. Elements between the 2 are similar but the executions are so different that they are not a copy of each other.

You have missed the point in the fun of disgaea. Disgaea has always been like a DBZ style story with power levels going above and beyond and the new increase in damage and levels. I think this game looks glorious but I do agree to air on the side of caution going forward with the new 3d approach. I think you don’t appreciate disgaea anymore man considering you complain about everything the series is lovingly known for such as simple but fun story and characters, insane levels regardless of impact to gameplay, and the shounen like protagonists. I love all things shounen please don’t hate on things that just don’t appeal to you because not everyone considers it a bad thing.

Not a fan of the 3d models. To me a selling point of disgaea was the high quality looking sprites. When i discovered disgaea 1 on psp i fell in love with the sprites, which far surpassed final fantasy tatics genre with better/unique idle animation and movement. To me, the 3d is a step backwards.
