This was my first trip with my new Penn Battle II 6000 reel married to an 1102 Heavy Action Ugly Stik. I purposely went to this spot because I knew there were enormous Red Snapper here and I wanted to see if I could pull them up before they made it to the structure. Folks.. it sure it tough when they are just feet from a culvert or structure. But, stand by, I shall succeed soon..!

Another great video, Salty. Calm seas made it a great day for fishing that far offshore in the 1720. Its a shame the Feds won't open up the RS for a day or two this year. I was seriously considering making the drive up if they had, however... BTW, was that a Penn 60 that John was using on his last trip out with you?

It’s commendable that you care about the fish’s survival and give it the best opportunity by venting it, and also showing us how it’s done. I’m really interested in taking up coastal fishing on the Southern East coast, especially Georgia. So, watching your videos gives me info and ideas of what to expect. I was retired, and had the time, but now I’m working again on a short term job that was too good to pass up, and dreaming about coastal fishing. Judging from your experiences, my thoughts at this time are that this near shore reef fishing over man-made structure is real frustrating. I’m not really interested in catch and release, especially sharks and cuda or red snapper. It’s too much work to be classed as fun after just a little of it. Your jetty fishing seems more productive for catch and keep. I plan on concentrating on inshore fishing at least until I get to know more about it all. I have often wondered why you keep messing with those red snapper and sharks and other pests when you could be catching specs or reds or flounder inshore?

Salty, your videos are so amusing - lots of primal grunting. BTW, God may have made those fish and provided them to us, and if so it was He who also gave most of us the good sense to appreciate the resource and recognize the science and plain evidence that says it can be depleted and ruined. Ever heard of the tragedy of the commons? God had nothing to do with the Laws of Man, except indirectly as explained - the good sense thingy. If God gave us the fish and a conscience and the ability to become civilized and create laws to govern our collective behavior, where the conscience of society has proven to be unreliable and inadequate regardless of the basis in religion or secular, then the simple answer is to respect the law of man. God doesn’t tell us to release a fish, or to vent it or to choose to eat it, or maybe I’m missing something, and he communicates with you that way. If so that would be interesting. Does he text or email?

+Michele LeMas (Chris Somerville) , That is correct. The SAFMC decided that this year, on the East Coast of the USA, they still needed to continue rebuilding the Red Snapper population. Of course, the facts are, there are TOO MANY Red Snapper but the appointed desk sitters in Washington, make the rules for we fishermen.

Unfortunately these new laws are harming more than the fish. I have family in Alabama and they said afte the oil spill they put regulation on how much commercial fisherman can take. The fish population then raised which means the shark population rised. There are now way more shark attacks to to the increased shark population.

+Jacob Clegg I don't understand fully the red snapper situation and haven't had a chance to get involved but don't forget that perception isn't always honest. Also remember that the less food there is for sharks, the more likely they'll try other prey items. The more you invade a predator's domain the more likely they are to try to eat you, be they sharks or lions or bears.

+SaltyKayak whats kind of annoying in my area is you have a limit on 1-2 fish; only certain times a year, blah blah blah; during a full moon, south side only. After you ready the 37 pages of rules and hope to god you arent do anything wrong. Then you see a commercial fishing boat dragging a net and scooping up 5000lbs of cod in about 4 hours (something they complain about while depleting the cod). Now I am limited to 1 or 2 fish; how the hell does that make any sense. Times like these is when I feel government has really let us down.

Just curious, maybe this wouldn't help in this situation, but what about a heavy mono shock/rub leader? Much more resistant to abrasion than braid. Here in so cal a lot of surf casting guys use 65lb braid as a backing to fill the spool up 200-300 yards, then about 100 yards of 20-30lb mono "running line", then 25 ft or so of 60-80 mono shockleader. "Running line" would be unnecessary from a boat, the point of the running line is to never get the braid anywhere it can rub. Very easy to tie leader onto braid, FG knot is best, Alberto knot is very good and much easier and faster. Again, maybe there's a reason it wouldn't work, but I'd bet you could muscle fish past those pipes every once in a while with a heavy mono leader.
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick.. never heard of that.. might be a new thing over on your coast. But I always use either wire or steel leader or up to 200 lb mono when I find where these 'thugs' are hanging out and whereas I used to lose 90% of them in the pipes below, now I get at least half to the surface.. now that I have them dialed in as to the way these Snapper operate.
@NickWeissMusic
@NickWeissMusic 8 жыл бұрын
+SaltyKayak glad to hear you're having more success, we're always learning huh. I was new to it as well a few months back but my line costs have since gone down significantly after the initial investment in braid- the braid can stay on the spool for years, you only need to replace the much cheaper mono leaders, as opposed to losing yards of braid on every break off. And there are less break offs anyway. Why not try braid to heavy mono for abrasion to steel leader for teeth. I'm still experimenting myself for different purposes but for all my saltwater fishing other than ultralight I use some form of braid to mono or fluoro. It works, it's a completely different concept than expecting one type of line to work for the whole length, when you can specialize each bit as needed. You do of course need to be very proficient with knots, you'll want to know FG, Alberto, Albright to name a few. But the knots are a matter of a few days to weeks practice at most.

+hafidz alhaq .. hello hafidz, I am ALWAYS amazed at the incredible variety of fish at our artificial reefs. But, my underwater cams are showing just a small section of a 'small' reef. One pile of culverts and other reef making materials, might only be 300 feet long and 100 feet wide and that is where 99% of the fish live. When you move away from the structure, it quickly turns into an underwater desert and very few fish live there. Fortunately, each reef system (like reef #6) has scattered piles of structure maybe 1/2 mile apart and 10 to 15 of these individual piles so there is a lot of places to fish at each reef system. I have yet to fish all of the piles of structure and a reef system and our County keeps adding more piles each year so there will always be ample opportunities to catch fish and for fish to multiply.

You sir need what we call down here a meat stick. Which is a heavy heavy action rod something in the 50 to 80lb class winch down the drag and pull them up before they even know there hooked. I use 60lb leader with 50lb braid I winch up groupers from the reef in the 25lb range. No problems with a penn battle 5000.

MarksmanOutdoors Hi Marksman.. don't tell anyone.. but I have a meat stick and it is married to an old Penn 320GT conventional reel which now has a frozen drag from the saltwater and my not taking care of it. But it still cranks and I can open spool it to get to the bottom. I used to carry it with me all the time until late last year when I removed it because, well frankly it never got used... I was never in the big fish.. until this year when it seems the big Red Snapper are moving in closer and closer to the near shore reefs. It might just be time to break out the meat stick..!

+boashna .. Hello boashna, Often it is very difficult to 'pull' a big Snapper up far enough away from the culverts and structure to get it to the boat. Our artificial reefs are mostly culverts and old bridge debris and the fish stay close to to those culverts. If you hook into one, you may only have a second or 2 to get him turned before he breaks you off in the structure.

@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 9 жыл бұрын
+Steve Hendricks .. Hi Steve, I have a beef stick and an adequate conventional Penn reel that i could use if I wanted to plus, a fellow from my church said I could use his electric reel and he 'guarantees' I'll get them up to the boat. I politely turned him down. Maybe f I were in 300'+ of water, I would take him up on it but to me, it really is the 'battle' and I truthfully don't mind losing to the 'better' opponent. Also, after MANY years of using both conventional and spinning, I just don't like the raw muscle of trying to pull a big bully off the bottom with a pool cue... I like the added sensitivity a longer rod gives and the action of a spinning.. just me I guess..! And I agree with you on the venting.. less is more and better. However, even at these shallow depths, many of the larger RS are so bloated and stressed from the internal pressures, that once released, they pop back up 10 yards from the boat and simply can't get back down. Then, we have to go and run them down, re-net them, vent them and release again. After catching many hundreds of RS, I am to the point now that I can pretty much tell the 'floaters' from the 'sinkers' and will vent only the ones I know can't make it back down without a little help.

@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 9 жыл бұрын
Odrummer007 hi Od, A fellow at church offered to let me use his electric reel saying it would pull everything to the surface with the push of a button. That's not me and I also know it's not you either. That's not fishing.. that's harvesting. I have caught plenty of fish (probably some of my own) that have hooks nearly rusted out, the way they were designed to work. I have even caught 1 Red Drum 2 years ago that had just the curve of the hook left in it's stomach. I have also seen where a Snapper will have a length of mono coming out it's 'rear' and yet the fish is well and thriving.. I cut the mono off and let it go. I also have a stainless steel circle hook hanging in my 'man cave' that I took out of the mouth of a big Snapper (it's in one of my videos from a couple months ago) with about 8" of mono hanging out of it's mouth and the mono was covered with sea growth. No telling how many 'years' that snapper had to deal with that SS hook impeding it's feeding. Now, to clarify ( I'm not sure why you seem take the 'worse' case scenario with me) but I do not LIKE to lose any fish. Well, maybe sharks... but when I lose nearly every big fish, I do get 'righteously' angry with myself. I will settle for only losing half the big fish but there is a learning curve. Also, know this is true.. most KZbin fishing videos WON'T show you the many break offs they have simply because of 'self righteous' arm chair 'environmental' fishermen will post negative 'oh you're so mean.. hurting that fish' type of comments and will only post the 'fun and clean' catches. Thus avoiding controversy. I show you the truth. Raw and actual life. I really try to be as honest to my viewers (you) as i can be.. and knowing that there will be a few that throw hand grenades in their comments.

@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 8 жыл бұрын
+Rich Giroux .. So Rich, would you prefer that I NOT show my losses (like the other fishing shows) and only show my catches? My fishing videos are about HONESTY and integrity.. you know, real life average Joe fishing and not powder-puff and sanitized video clips of only successes. As for the miles and miles of 'polluting' tackle, I use regular hooks that rust out in a month or 2 and cause no harm BUT Rich, I have rescued SS hooks (2) out of a couple fish from this site that had been in the fish for many months if not years and you will see one of the rescues in my video from a couple weeks ago.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rny4i3ZpopaHrrM. Plus, I had 'discovered' this TOP SECRET.. LOL.. spot where for some reason the big Snapper are abundant here.. and I was unprepared for them.. well, I got their number now and the break off's are far fewer as I have beefed up my tackle.. As to why I thank the Lord.. because I am a disciple of Christ.. a Christian. And I know there is a day coming when I and EVERYONE will stand before Christ and make account for everything.. including every thought. The very fact that everything from the dirt under your fingernails, to the structure of your DNA is ..designed.. points to a Designer.. inescapable conclusion that there HAS to be a higher power. The difference between me and most ppl is I am looking forward to that inevitable day. But, Rich, I also know you probably won't understand or accept what I say...

+ThomasYou2011 ..Hi Thomas, This year, on the East coast of Florida in Federal waters (beyond 3 miles) there is NO season for Red Snapper. Somewhere in the darker recesses of the SAFMC control panels decision making brain, they determined that we caught too many Red Snapper in the 8 day season in 2014 and DEPLETED the stock. So, rather than assess WHY we caught so many (because there is an enormous population) they sat behind their comfortable desks and simply decided to close the decision this year. (can you tell I am VERY disappointed in the Governments improper lazy decision?). Rather than investigate the reasons why (doing their job), they just made a desktop assessment from previous incorrect data.. and shut the season down. Wanna see proof they were wrong? Just watch my videos...! Now, having vented my extreme disappointment in the SAFMC... there is actually no size limit when we have a micro season. You can keep a 10" or a 36" Red Snapper and I know there are some BIG sows around these artificial reefs where I fish. On the smaller RS, I rarely have to vent them because they can easily overcome the buoyancy expansion of their smaller air bladders and make it back to the bottom (excluding possibly being eaten by waiting barracudas) but the bigger sows more frequently need venting or they will just bob on the surface and eventually die. However, WITHIN the 3 miles State limit, if you happen to catch a RS, it must be 20" or more to legally keep. I have never known a fisherman to catch a 20"+ RS within State waters.

Hi Austin, I am pretty sure that was either my 60 or 80 lb braid. I now have settled with what I consider about perfect for my 6000 Penn reels and that is 100 lb braid. Of course, I use different strengths of leader depending on what I am after to catch and the kind of structure I am fishing in.

IronFist Games Hi Iron.. we DO have a few ships that we can fish by here but the divers hit them really hard and kill everything legal so i don't fish them. I concentrate on the other locations of artificial reefs where the possibilities are better.

Not to be rude if you want to get the fish up tighten the drag and don't hold the spool. Because one time i caught a dolphin not meaning to that barde cut one of our bait knives in half im sure you would not want to happen to your hand.

hockey boy Hi hockey.. Wat strength was your braid? I had 80lb braid on and 80lb mono leader. I NOW have 100lb braid on but we are having a terrible theromcline and the bottom bite is dead..dead..dead. Also, we have a unique situation here in that those big Red Snapper hang out right next to those big culverts and if you don't turn them within the first 5', they hit those culverts and pop you off... I am ANXIOUS to get back out there when the water warms and arm wrestle with them again with a locked down drag...

Cool video...i like the underwater clips too...how far out are you? I live on the georgia coast by Ossabaw Island and fish inshore, nearshore, and offshore...I am jealous of your water clarity which is why I ask...we have to out at least 8 miles for the water to clear up...I heard your Ponce Inlet can be a bear too...again, thanks...

+Shawn Weed .. Hi Shawn, This reef is about 12 to 15 miles out and it is 'somewhat' rare for our water to be that clear too. There are many negative factors that impact whether I put the cams down or not and clarity is the top factor, then current and then waves.

Zach Stinnett Hi Zach.. I live near Daytona Beach and go out to the ocean thru Ponce Inlet. This specific reef is called #12 and is about 12 miles out from the inlet. I am using small fish (ruby lips aka grunts) to hook into those big boys....

I am curious about the pipes and where you think they came from???
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Paul, I know exactly where they came from. We have a 'culvert' graveyard close to our airport where they store broken cement pipes, poles, supports, etc. And the FWC is always taking a barge load of this broken rubble out to one of the artificial reefs and dumping a pile in a new section of the reef system. That is why it is somewhat improper to call it a 'reef', like 'reef #5' because at reef #5 there might be 15 or 20 piles of culverts/debris (each one maybe 100' long and 75' wide) but all those individual piles are scattered in a 1 square mile area. Where it was once basically dead, flat bottom is now teaming with all kinds of sea life. In our area, we might have 15 individual artificial 'reefs' and there are hundreds and hundreds all over the coast of Florida. What would be great is if we had tens of thousands of these reefs because it would create a habitat for unimaginable diversity and life and Florida would be the 'go to' place for every vacationing fisherman who would be guaranteed a great catch.

@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 8 жыл бұрын
+0ocyco0 ... Hi Oo, for this spot and for fishing at our artificial reefs, when fishing for THESE bottom fish, you HAVE TO lock the drag down. My break offs are not from 'no drag' but rather from the fish running into a culvert or under a cement pole and cutting the line. I have 80 lb to 100 lb leader and 100 lb braid and nearly all of my 'break offs' are from spit, bent or broken hooks (which I am remedying) to cut off on the structure. If I were fishing over natural bottom or fishing for pelagics, I lessen the drag and let them run. It has taken me years to learn to fish these artificial reefs correctly.. and lock the drag down...

I think you should try vertical jigging I have seen other with grate success using the technique. all you need is jigging rod a spinning reel and vertical jigs. please respond back
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 9 жыл бұрын
Alexander Hosein Hi Al.. I actually recently bought a big vertical jig head and I will use it when I can expect NOT to lose it in the structure the first 20 seconds I drop it down. My primary mistake during this trip was when I anchored close to the structure, I drifted back over the middle and upon dropping a pin fish or grunt down, it would get inhaled and immediately dash the 7' to 10' deep in the structure and pop me off. If I had anchored 15' to 20' or even 30' to the side of the structure and could lure one of those big boys out, it would be game on..! as I would be able to wear him out with the 2 or 3 hard dashes as he tried to get to structure.. but stay tuned, I'll get some big ones to the surface soon...

Wouldn't heavier line and thicker trace do the job to get them up? Setting less drag and winching them up so the don't go for the structure? That's how I would do it.

Hi Bunk, I think I finally got the secret zeroed down. I still had too light of main line. 80 LB and now have 100 lb. My leader was also too light (the true secret) and I now use anywhere from 135 lb steel to 200 lb Mono and even in the 2 seconds it takes them to rush into a culvert, I can usually pull them out now and at least see them and maybe measured before releasing. My next trip where I intentionally go after these thug Red Snapper will be when My kids (all married adults) come down from N. Carolina and I take them out for some 'pole bending arm wrestling' experience.

So Ian, put on your big boy britches and come on out and SHOW us how it's done.. and don't edit out your break offs... the problem isn't the line, its ur reel only has 25lb drag. if you want a big fish, you gotta invest in a big reel like Shimano Beastmaster 9000!
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 9 жыл бұрын
Mike Jone Hi Mike... actually, AT THESE sites, it's both the line, the reel and the pole, I have finally upgraded to 100lb braid and if you saw my most recent video, brought in a 7' shark without much trouble. But am discovering ALSO, that my knot from the braid to the swivel is now my weak point as I think I had 3 break offs AT the swivel, braid side. I am going to begin tying a uni know as all my knots. Sure, I know I could buy 150lb braid and 150lb leader and use a telephone pole to pull the big ones up but what fun is that? No challenge... Had a fellow from church offer me an electric reel to pull them up but I declined. I want to get as even matched as possible so I can get at least half of the monsters to the boat...
@mikejone1934
@mikejone1934 9 жыл бұрын
SaltyKayak i've read some of the comments and i believe you should have a wire leader bc the pipe structure. .. yeah a heavier pole bc you need some'um strong bc as soon as you set the hook , you wanna get him out of the hole as quickly as possible. fyi, this type of fishery is similar to tog fish or blackfish in NYC. btw, i do visit FL often, in Duval.
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 9 жыл бұрын
Mike Jone Hi Mike, I actually have some 60lb wire 'tooth proof' and will be taking some leaders out this next trip. This will be the first time I have put it on 100lb braid so we will see if I have 'neutralized' the big fish winning nearly 100% of the time. I don't want a 100% 'in the boat' ratio but at least 50%... well.. I think that would be both fair and sporting.
