This young person's insightfullness, worldly awareness, and eloquence goes well beyond his 23 years. The fact that he grew up in the USA hegemon and saw through the American news propaganda gives us hope that not all young people are easily brain-washed.

Exactly. What happened in HK was outright disgusting. I don't really blame those that can't understand Cantonese to support the radicals at first. But the revolting actions of them bullying and turning to physical attacks on even older folks and women that disagree with them should have been a red flag. Their mannerism are no different from gangsters. And then the one-sided media coverage of the incidents, looking the other way and refusing to even report those violence at times until it was so hard to hide. Absolutely disgusting.

I am on the same boat as this young man growing up I found myself siding more left and whenever I mention China having things we don’t the average response has always been “well move there then” even among people of my own political views; and in fact I did in 2019 I went there and told all my friends that I did and what I saw; it was such a hurdle because at that time I had to do travel visa and all that. Anyway coming back I was totally disillusioned with what we were taught about China the first thing my closest friend told me when I said how amazing it was; “well you look the part… of course nothing will happen to you if you go there” that was the last straw when I completely gave up on the political left of the west; I am still living in the west but I am so far removed from both political parties as I realized both the parties and the people in them actually do not want to better themselves or at all and are in essence one of the same I’m just here to watch it all slowly burn down as the biggest militaristic empire in the world.

In China we have a saying this kind of mentality: a solitary flower in love with its own fragrance. Many of the left groups in the west aren't interested in solving real problems in real life, which are usually messy, requires hard labor and most of the time thankless. Sitting back and pointing out that China is not pure and good enough for them is much easier.

I am Mainland Chinese, I will always remember the little story which my ex, who is Aussie, once told me, that after her stay in China for more than 2 years and headed back to Australia for Christmas, during her family gatherings people asked her a lot about China, yet whatever she said about it that was positive and not reported by the medias, people chose not to believe. Even though she was the one who properly had lived in the country.

A number of comments by Americans state that they are concerned about how much America has declined. As long as you have a college education, life is bearable with an employment. My concern is that the anti-China sentiment is so strong as though America is under attack by China. Yet there's a huge ocean intervening and over 300 US's military bases encircle China with its navy patroling China's coastlines. So really it's China under threat.

"Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will"--Gramsci Although the intellect becomes impossible to get past, the deeper you dig.."The crises consists precisely in the fact that the old is dying, and the new cannot be born, in this interregnum, a great variety of morbid symptoms appear..--Gramsci Gramsci would still be waiting, a hundred years later..

I’ve been watching Daniel’s videos for a few years now. So much of what Willem said was so relatable. Being in my 20s in the USA, there just isn’t a lot of hope in the political system here going forward. So many young people here are becoming disenchanted and increasingly nihilistic and have no power to change anything.

There is a TV Series in China called "The Age of Awakening" and one channel here on KZbin has English subtitles. Watching that gave me hope and inspired me to think that even for a hopeless country like the US, there could be some way to turn things around but it takes strength in a number of the people equipped with the knowledge and patience to want to change things around. China could do it, and the US can do it too if the people aren't so divisive.

Have been living in US for almost 20 years, and have been closely and constantly watching how the country's political system is dying from inside through time, I believe now US would most likely neither fall back to imperialism or "reform" toward socialism, it is just matter of time. At this point, I do not see any possibility of democracy while people only are GIVEN choices between crap and trash...that means the system has been morally rigid and systematically corrupted, such a system is no longer sustainable for the global development. Never think people outside are stealing things from you, it is just that you ripe off people by force when they were weak and back warded, and now they stop being under performance and even out perform you, and stop your rip off things that never belong to you and even take back their rightful belongings.

about the political awareness Daniel talked about, I think there is another perspective you should look into. you may not necessarily know what middle school students are forced to learn, in my days, its called "Politics", now its called "Moral and Law". this lesson is essentially teaching you why and how you should overthrow Chinese government if they are doing wrong. when I was a kid, I thought it was all bullshit. the older I am, the more I appreciat it.

Great conversation! It’s good for Argentinian people that Milei has changed his tune a bit with regards to working with China. I’m only afraid this will be used by some of the western liberal left as proof / narrative that China is not western left (communist/socialist)but this authoritarian oppressive country who works together with leaders who are clearly not left. Western left is nowadays only interested in promoting certain narrative around “western styled” democracy, freedom, human rights, free speech and more bla bla. Just look how western left embraces Dalai Lama as their symbol of western liberal left while in reality the people behind the guy want the return of their feudal property and way of life!

But into the second half of the session, his ‘yeah, like…I’m like…” is very disturbing. If he’s in China to teach English, he should start speaking proper English himself. Don’t transport such awful colloquialism on the Chinese. It hardly helps them articulate and communicate.
