RIP to Joe Walker, probably America's greatest test pilot during this era. To die in a corporate, promotional photoshoot for General Electric is almost incomprehensible when compared to the achievements of this X-15 test pilot. The F-104 was a beast of an airplane and a favorite of the era's fighter jocks who wanted to fly faster and higher. An F-104 equipped with an auxiliary rocket in its tail almost killed Chuck Yeager during a test of high altitude capabilities and the German Airforce had a miserable experience with the Starfighter losing well over 300 planes to operational accidents. It had to be respected and flown the way it was designed to fly or it killed you faster than its Mach numbers. Luftwaffe officers called it "The Widowmaker".

The reasons for the F-104's high loss rate in Luftwaffe hands are the miserable weather in Central Europe, and the fact that the Luftwaffe never flew any Mach-1 capable fighters before acquiring the F-104, having only flown Transonic fighters.

@UnknownUser-j3n3 ай бұрын
I dont support any such activists but it seemed a matter of time before it would crash. There is a limit to human reaction time. You cant expect to travel at infinite speed and then expect pilots to react in time to prevent a potential crash. Ofcourse that crash in 2000 didn't involve this factor. But eventually it was bound to happen.
@michaeledwards22512 ай бұрын
@@UnknownUser-j3n The critical factor wasn't the crash, it was the pilot didn't land immediately in the fields around the airport. He wasn't aware of the extent of the fire. Had he been so aware he could have reacted appropriately and the passengers would have had a chance of evacuation.

In my opinion the XB-70 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. I was 14 when this accident happened and I thought, what a waste of good men and aircraft.
@michaeledwards22512 ай бұрын
An incredible waste of potential development. For supersonic flight, optimized for minimum fuel consumption, the amount of fuel consumed is proportional to the time spent flying supersonically. The faster the aircraft, the lower the fuel per mile, while supersonic. The XB-70 honeycomb steel frame had the potential to fly at Mach 4, matching the fuel consumption of a 737, and potentially Mach 5, matching the fuel consumption of a Jumbo Jet. If Mach 6 could be achieved, a fuel consumption lower than modern high bypass jets would be achieved, allowing trans Pacific flights at costs lower than modern jets. (Steel melts at 1500 Centigrade unlike the 1000 Centigrade of Aluminum, increasing the maximum air friction temperature tolerable by the aircraft by 500 Centigrade without cooling. A honeycomb making the transfer of heat away from hot spots possible. For Fahrenheit users, 1000 C is 1800 F, and 1500 C is 2700 F. ) The Concorde used the fuel tank as a heat sink. Additional heat could be sunk into the fuel by using the latent heat of vaporization. (Precooling the fuel by refrigeration, would maximize the amount of heat which could be absorbed. ) Modern supersonic aircraft designs use electrical charges, and accurate shaping, to both neutralize and minimize the trailing sonic boom. Having 2 XB-70 would allow the usage of 1 of them for experimental development.

On departure the pilots turned the wrong way comming out of Palm Springs and flew into the side of Mt San Gorgonio. They called the demo flight of the Concorde 'Mediocre'? Maybe that was because the damned thing wasn't meant to do aerial stunts like fighter planes. It's fatal flaw was revealed in the crash that took so many lives and ended the SST era. The TU=144 was due to a design flaw (like Condorde) and a hot shot pilot who over stressed the plane.
@shi01Ай бұрын
just one thing, the crash of Concorde didn't cause the end of the SST era. It was always unlikely that Concorde would fly significantly beyond the year 2000. The reason for that was simply, that there weren't any spare parts around anymore. Concorde was designed in the second half of the 60's. Now in the 60's most airliner designs in wide spread use were less then 20 years old. So the consideration back then was that Concorde would be in service for about 25-30 years and then something better would replace it. So, they only produced spare parts for about 30 years of use of the entire fleet, which also wasn't very big. That also meant the airlines couldn't get more spare parts from retired Concorde, because there weren't any retired Concorde. Now at some point, the entire Concorde maintenance program was given to Airbus. But, Airbus never received any of the original tooling to produce more spare parts. The tooling was instead destroid. All Airbus could do was manage the spares that existed. Now AirFrance and BA were of course aware of this issue and asked Airbus if they could produce new spares. Airbus, than basically said, "In theory we could produce new spares for Concorce, but who will pay the bill?". Which was a legitimate question because in aviation if you don't use the orignial tooling to produce new parts, you have to newly certify the new parts and that would have cost probably more than a billion dollar, just to keep Concorde in the air and nobody wanted to pay this.

The Valkyrie was a beautiful aircraft and it was a pity that it was made superfluous by the Soviets S.A.M system, however I was wondering why they couldn’t have used the Valkyrie at high speed to approach the target area and then drop to low level to infiltrate the enemy airspace and then either employ a “lob toss” release of its ordinance whilst climbing back to altitude and getting out of the area at the predicted Mach 3 ?, although, as with the B-52 crews the Valkyrie would probably be on a one way mission, but they might have been able to get further away before being hit by the blast from their weapon or running out of fuel, maybe even making it to friendly territory before they had to eject/abandon the aircraft. R.I.P the two pilots who died in this tragic accident, loosing their lives in combat is one thing but to die in the way they did is very sad indeed. Per Ardua Ad Astra.

@@carolball5764 I don't mind either, haven't been a subscriber very long so I enjoy them. Never saw this one. I can imagine new subscribers appreciate them as well.

This video has one factual error amid generally good analysis. There was no French Mirage in the vicinity. That was a story concoted by the Soviet government to excuse the colossal stupidity of the Charger's pilots.

The background information is .... disgusting. I mean what America and Russia were doing at the time. Spending billions or trillions on trivial projects and then calling them off within a few years. Could have done so many positive things for humanity, choosing instead to play stupid war games.
