I had a theory a while back that the reason Lily/Lola and Harper both dressed in such crazy fashions compared to their female best friend, is because the shows needed their female main character to have a female best friend, or she might seem like a weird loner, and because it's tv and sexism is a thing, the female best friend couldn't be played by an ugly actress, so they needed a way to still make the best friend seem "Other" to the audience, so they'd project unto the "correct" character, obviously cause it's Disney this way to make them seem "Other" had to be super PG, so they went with dressing them in a crazier fashion than the main character. It is, to a degree, also possible to see this in other shows and movies, where the female main character, while styled well, will look almost bland or boring next to her "excentric" friend

I vividly remember watching an episode of Shake It Up in 2010/2011 and raiding my closet to put together an outfit with a million prints and layers and random statement accessories that I had begged my mom to buy from Claire’s (think fingerless lace gloves and bows with studs on them for…some reason) but when I tried it all on, it just looked stupid. I couldn’t understand why they looked cute and I didn’t, so I cried about it and stuck to my basic preteen attire after that. I wish I could go back in time to tell myself they didn’t look cute, they were just on TV and I was 12 so I assumed their style was the pinnacle of fashion 😭

+creepymiddleagedman Honestly, you should have seen my style when I was about 6-8 years old or so. When I've looked at old photo albums, I noticed that I never really wore what others wore. And as I got older, idk if my mom made me start making clothing choices for myself which tbh isn't a bad thing at all and I've worn some major mismatched outfits when I was younger. And to some level, I still wear some mismatched clothes/outfits without a care in the world. Then again, I was 1 of the taller kids in elementary school where I was probably around 7 or so wearing bell bottom jeans. Given, idk if that was in style or not, but I was never "up" on fashion trends until my bff had introduced me to Low-Rise skinny jeans and when I mean low, I mean low-low. Sorry if a little tmi, but bikini style underwear is practically how low the Real low-rise skinny jeans were. Given, they weren't as low as that, but I'd wear my jeans just slightly above that which is pretty low under my belly button. Apparently, cargo jeans/cargo pants are coming back into style and I'm usually not one up w/the latest fashion trends, but that was def. one I went for. I got lucky enough to find a low-ish rise pair of cargo pants. In terms of the current low-rise jeans, the majority of those rise sizes are mid-sizes over the original original low rise size back from when I was like 13 lol. Apart from a potential friendship fallout, I think once low-rise jeans had been phased out into high rise jeans = Nope, I'm out. And I started to wear leggings and sweatpants far more often than not.

@cicicave1279
@cicicave1279 2 ай бұрын
@@liabstrait8306 I've looked at some old photos of mine before too. When I was in elementary school, I wore bell bottom jeans. But then I saw a picture of myself wearing 2 very mismatched floral patterns together. Also, I did go out in public like that and I'm like: "What was I thinking." Given, now being an adult who is 30, I still don't care about being mismatched, but I'd never wear 2 floral patterns again w/the way I had. I think about middle school/high school is when my best friend got me into Low-Rise skinny jeans. And I think by our Senior Year, one day, I asked her about it and she was like: "I haven't worn skinny jeans in ages," and this prob. around the same time High Rise jeans became very popular among the newer generation of kids. I envy those who can do both low and high rise jeans, but me = nope. So I stopped wearing jeans almost completely after that unless it was for work. But thankfully where I had worked at for about a year, their dress code was super laxxed and their 1 rule was "no blue jeans," which makes sense if you're going to be bending down a lot. I wore leggings so much when I had worked there. I literally started wearing leggings/sweatpants a lot more. Also, as I got older, I hated the bloated feeling one gets when they eat junk food when wearing jeans, lol. And with sweatpants, you can't feel that. Technically, I can tolerate mid-rise, but still highly prefer low-rise. And most stores "low-rise's," are mid-size on me. Sorry, for the extra info, but my style wasn't the best when younger, either lol.

Those “useless” belts, layering, and chunk accessories were all the rage in the 2010s, literally putting on accessories and more clothes just to put them on. I remember my mom dressing me like this because that’s what was trendy, and we didn’t even get Disney channel. It was at first a product of its time, and then became “Disney” brand to mimic this moment in time, almost like a time capsule.

As someone born in 96, Lizzie and her friends really look exactly like kids age 11-15 would wear at the time. Sometimes they aged them down too with colors and patterns (some of Lizzie's fits look very similar to my clothes when I was maybe 6, 7) but they let them wear more mature things too - it's important to keep in mind that at that time tweens still existed and people didn't go straight from 9 to a drunk elephant using micro-adult lol. Those later shows were kind of a mess with those layers. I wore skirts over pants, shorts over tights and 2 tshirts sometimes and again, I was by no means following trends but I've never seen anyone get up to the Disney level LOL

and i think this is the problem we are having with kids today. I am older than you. I was in the 6th grade when you were born lol! But, I know a lot of bad things are coming to light about Nick and Disney but, I think we also have to remember that these shows did provide for an age group that really does get looked over now in 2024. We used to have malls and arcades for kids to hang out at. But, now it really does feel that kid are being expected to jump from "Bluey" to "Euphoria" without these channels there aren't really kids that are ready to be beyond preschool tv but not ready for the stuff adults are watching. The same goes for fashion and places to go. There is no middle ground anymore. We have 8 year olds bullying each other because they arn't going around with Stanley cups and using Retinol. There is nothing for this age group and family friendly tv shows are beginning to become a thing of the past! There are very few shows that a 9 year old can watch with their parents and each person is able to enjoy it. No places for them to go, nothing for them to watch. Then we complain that they want to jump into adult behavior. So, I guess I am just saying....What do we want them to wear? What do we want them to watch and where do we want them to hang out...because we complain that they are out there wearing retinol cream and trying to be mini adults....But what alternative is out there for them? I think this must be one of the hardest time to be an older child in modern history. In a way, I do wish kids today were dressing in "Disney" fashion because at least looking like the quirky "best friend" or wearing their hair in "Jojo bows" at least was not sexualizing them. What the answer is, I don't know. But, we are putting a double standard on these kids and that isn't fair either. I always say that childhood only lasts for a short amount of time. If you are lucky you get maybe 17 or 18 years to be a kid/teen. and when you think about our total expected life span and the fact that you have out grown so many childish things by the time you are 18, it's not fair. These kids only have a limited time to be kids and it is being taken away from them.

Also a lot of the layering was a result of trends like belly baring tops and miniskirts not being school dress code approved. Youd need to wear a tanktop or When you raised your arms your low rise flares and highrise skirt would get you in trouble. As Well as some schools not allowing sleeveless shirts. so youd have a shrug or hoodie over top, and maybe a longer sleeve shirt Underneath. So while it wasn't all that sleek or fashionable it was an attempt to manage the restrictions we hadto work with and limited access to clothes, many of us relying on kmart, walmart, and JCpennys.

now being 17 years old, i was that 6 year old desperately trying to relate to a show about highschoolers. i was too young to be a part of mid 2000's/2010's fashion but i still remember it. as i was getting older i learned how stressful being a teenager actually is and i try to relive that child-like fantasy by dressing similarly to the outfits of 2000's shows (though im more inspired by monster high,bratz, winx, ect). i LOVE being the person with overly colorful and sparkly clothing and having older generations tell me that's what they wore when they were my age. EDIT: ANOTHER THING IS THAT I REALLY LOVE THE BODY SHAPE CLOTHING WAS TRYING TO ACHEIVE IN THE 2000's. like yess give me a low cut tshirt with really short sleeves for some reason ,vest, and leggings, 100 bracelets, with a mini skirt and uggs.

when I was a kid growing up in this time, I absolutely adored their fashion haha. it was definitely perfect for its time in my opinion, as we weren't being influenced by social media influencers dressing older, all we had to influence us was these characters dressing their age and even younger. I layered my clothes so much with different prints and loved it haha. I was probably 8-12 dressing like this and would not trade it for anything different. :)

I thought so, too. Though, I’m not sure if I was maybe just growing out of Disney and starting to recognize Disney dresses down their characters and is kind of off the wall at times. I mean, I still watched Disney into HS, but, I started to notice that around Shake it Up time frame. Or maybe that was just when the tween started to die. Justice went out of business. Claire’s is idk, on its last legs? Idr. Is Claire’s still a thing?

i think the way they made all of these girls “fashionistas” that had different outfits every single episode was definitely trying to train us to feel like we need to spend tons of money on new clothes all the time rather than enjoying life in what we already have most of the time

Brenda Song actually started the trend for wacky outfits in kidcoms, when as a little kid she briefly worked on Nickelodeon's '100 Deeds For Eddie McDowd'. Her character Sariffa was a Japanese child prodigy middle-school student best friend, and she dressed in very stylish colourful fits every episode.

As a person who lives in a very warm climate and didnt have much money I always thought how impractical it would be to wear so many layers and also how expensive it must be to have such a large quantity of accessories , that and how wearing them just wasnt very functional. I figured it was for marketing to sell clothing lines ect

I never watched these shows when I was a kid, but even now I can feel the warmth of that era. These outfits are not very classy and trendy by today's standarts, but they're genuine and original. Like teenage fashion is supposed to be. In my opinion, it's better that seeing teenage characters being overly sexualised or depicted mature.

I didn't have Disney Channel as a kid but as a 32 year old I still have furry scarves and berets, several items of clothing fully sequined, far too much costume jewellery, and every colour of the rainbow in my wardrobe. Didn't realise how much the fashion trends of my childhood stuck until this video! And I match outfits down to my make up and nail polish. Co-ordination is key.

Here in germany Disney Channel Shows weren't a big thing, but we looked at the pictures on early internet (about 2000-2003) and found them ridiculous :D Nowadays I get the appeal, because its bright and fun. Also some of the styles were really creative. We in Germany were more into the fashion of music videos and shows like Gilmore Girls and The OC.

Wow the editing on that Lizzie McGuire sweepstakes commercial was an assault on my eyes lol. Early 2000s man. That aside, this was really interesting. I know absolutely nothing about fashion, but I remember my younger sister watching Shake It Up when she was younger, and my mom expressing her confusion as to why on Earth the girls on the show dressed the way they did. I’d never even noticed until she brought it up, lol. It’s cool to get insight on why the costumes were intentionally designed that way, as well as commentary from someone who likes fashion.

Hilary Duff is Aquarius Rising and 11th house dominant iirc, makes sense why her most famous character is a sweet popular everyman friend to all, and why she looks so good in boho prints, electric colours, and zigzag streaked hair. Even the perfumes she designed and released smells a little eclectic and exotic, despite also being very easily wearable, likeable, elegant and feminine (fitting her Libra sun sign).

On a kinda related note: There was an episode in Hannah Montana about changing her image and music, and at the end of the episode she decides that she’s fine exactly the way she is… only to change her look in season 3. I mean, it’s still recognisably a Hannah Montana image, but it’s also an updated look, so I wondered why they didn’t transition her look through that episode. The message could have been about not forcing a new look and identity and to learn to change gradually, as change is part of you and should come naturally. Miley could have come to the conclusion that Hannah Montana did need an update, as long as it wasn’t too drastic or was against who she was.

As a kid watching Shake It Up the most frequent question in my mind was - what weather were their outfits supposed to be worn at? Because they seemed bad for hot and bad for cold weather. I wanted to dress like them but whenever I thought about that it was the wrong time of the year and the outfits didn't fit the weather - which was all yearround (i live in a country that has a supposedly similar climate as Chicago where the show is supposedly taking place).
