Disney channel saying that you should get back with a guy who cheated on you was one of the worst things they could have taught. Because I remember as a kid being so mad that Teddy got back together with Spencer. Even as a kid I knew this wasn’t right. This was not a good message Disney should have been teaching to young girls or anyone. Cheating should never be seen as a “we can work this out” and “it’s ok you didn’t mean it” solution.

I completely understand where u’re coming from. I didn’t like the cheating but they could have done it so much better. I feel like they where young and when u’re young u don’t really need to be looking for the love of your life but when it came to the cheating i feel they could have made him do so much better to get her back. Don’t get me wrong, as i already said i don’t think cheating is okay but i feel like they could’ve justify it by just making him mature throughout the show and actually feel guilt and pain for what he did to Teddy. Idk maybe is just me but i believe they where both really ignorant and again THEY WHERE HELLA YOUNG. Cheating tropes are not bad because it teaches u how naive u can be sometimes when love blinds u but the way they did it with 0 to no effort from him to get her back or like a LEGIT CHANGE FROM HIM was what drove me mad. I think it truly depends on the situation. But for Disney channel, they shouldn’t be doing that whole morally ambiguous route for kids. Kids don’t think in moral ambiguity until they’re older. They can learn that on their own and it’s best to teach them that being angry is valid, men shouldn’t expect to all be forgiven, and maybe also that men aren’t all cheaters.

@@GymtoshiI know this one bothers me /: just because we’re struggling with our identity doesn’t mean we have a pass for hurting someone especially someone who’s in love with us. I have a friend who’s father cheated on their mom with a man and most people felt sorry for him, like he had no other choice. But he could have gotten a divorce even if he was not ready to tell people who he was he could have still just said they didn’t love their wife anymore and broke things off before going on to explore their sexuality. It’s really messed up that we’re basically teaching children they should be ok with being cheated on because hey it’s just an oopsie they’re not a bad person lol

I think by having Jake cheats in Miley, the writers did something great accidentally. Like you said, they built it up like he was THE one, them being together was endgame, which is how a lot of teenagers think of their first love/relationship. They built up the relationship in at least Miley’s eyes(I never liked Jake), to be similar to how a lot of us feel, and having him cheat on her was a somewhat realistic end for a high school relationship. I don’t think the writers did it in purpose though, because they could have done a lot more with that kind of storyline if it was.

​@@Leviachan-In my opinion, Bunk'd does have this issue. They now have Parker and Victoria dating when I honestly believe that Lou and Parker have more chemistry. I think the only reason they have Parker and Victoria dating is because the actors are together in real life. But just because they have chemistry in real life does mean their characters will automatically be perfect together too. I mean, I guess there's nothing really wrong with Victoria and Parker, but I feel like their relationship is really shallow, where Parker just all of a sudden decides he likes her because she's a better dancer than him. I guess I appreciate that he wasn't insecure about Victoria being better than him at dancing lol, but it's just that the storyline between Parker and Victoria came out of nowhere. Plus, more people have been wanting Lou and Parker to be together even before Victoria showed up, but of course it is up to the writers as to what they want to do. But having a whole storyline in season 5 where Parker thought Lou had a crush on him and was SO excited about it, only to then just kind of move past that so quickly just bothers me. I'd be more okay with Lou and Parker not be together if it wasn't for that episode, but you can't tell me that Parker wasn't so happy when he thought Lou had a crush on him. Like the guy literally thought Lou had asked him out on a bowling date and then when they came back from the "date" and Lou was saying how she got an amazing score, Parker told her, "maybe you got such a great score because you were trying to impress me." I don't know, it seems like in season 5, Lou and Parker were going to be together but now the writers are really trying to squash any chance of that happening and all so that Parker can be with someone who has only been in three episodes so far and with someone that he only loves because she's pretty and dances better than him - meanwhile Lou and Parker have literally said that they admired each other twice and while yes, it was in a platonic way, but I just think Lou and Parker have a deeper relationship and connection with each other. Not to mention that in the season 7 episode "Workaversary Girl", it was revealed that Lou and Parker have what they both refer as their special day where they celebrate the day they started working together and it legit seems more like they're celebrating their anniversary. And then when it turns out that Lou forgot their workaversary, Parker was so upset and he told her "I would never forget our special day. Were our business feelings for each other all a lie?" LIKE SERIOUSLY, "business" feelings?? The writers know what they are doing at this point😭 But anyways this is all just my opinion, obviously I wish Lou and Parker would be together, but it's the writers' decision. I still think that Lou and Parker had the potiental to be the best ship on the show since Emma and Xander, but it is true that often times, Disney won't allow the truly good ships to ever be together. He lied to Teddy and he lied to Skyler and I hate how the rest of the show seemed to forget that he cheated on Skyler as well who was just as much of a victim as Teddy. At least she got the better end. She dated PJ who was a good boyfriend. Teddy should have ended up with Bo since he mirrors her dad much better. Plus she deserves better And Mason-Alex. No. Teddy also moved on at the same time as Spencer where they "both" began dating a doppleganger of each other. The point was to show they still had feelings for each other. The Teddy doppleganger was the only person he dated. He didn't refuse to be friends out of spite but because he was still in love with her and couldn't do it. Sometimes, it takes time or a certain event to make a person realize something. But nevertheless he left her alone once she chose Beau, even when he was back in town for the summer until Teddy sent her dad to invite him to her party.

When I was first watching Good luck Charlie I was into the Spencer and Teddy relationship until he cheated on her. As a kid I was sad by this because I was low-key a hopeless romantic who is always rooting for the fist main couple I see; however now that I'm older I feel like Teddy and Spencer should never have gotten back together. Spencer still disappoints me especially since Teddy was at first so happy with him and he cheated on her and lied to her about it. After that he just can't take the hint that she doesn't trust him anymore and that they're never getting back together. For crying out loud he literally follows her up the mountain when she's supposed to be on vacation,, like I didn't realize that was very creepy. Bottom line the writers choosing to make Teddy get back together with Spencer never actually felt right since Spencer never really earned her forgiveness

In Hannah Montana, the dad had always given miley those videos of the mom in certain situations bc I think the mom knew that the dad can’t always give her the advice she needs ( the mom talked about this in an ep too) so I feel that her mom left videos for girl talks, chats and even just so miley could hear her voice again… it was such a cute idea !!

The other side of the coin of toxic media relationships is when TV shows or books make it seem like cheating is the only excuse for breaking up with someone. A character can be in a terrible or abusive relationship and the writers will have their partner cheat on them instead of just having them break up normally because their relationship isn’t working.

It makes me so mad when, and this only ever happens with female characters, a girl in a show or book is stuck in a "love triangle" between two guys and one of them is a complete d*ck and the other one is genuinely nice and decent, but of course she's gonna end up with the jerk because he's dark and mysterious and all broody. But first, they have to have her date the nice one and then have him cheat on her because they need to come up with any reason to make the asshole guy look better in comparison

I'm glad Miley chose Jesse in the end (not only because of Jake cheating). It was refreshing to see the main character end up with a guy or girl that isn't the first person they date on the show or the consistent, same love interest. In the case of Teddy and Spencer (regardless of Bridget and Shane's real life romance), another intention that writers might have had was showing how a cheater can change and prove that they're sorry for what they did. Because people can change and learn from what they did. I don't think Spencer should've pushed so hard, though. Especially when Teddy was in a new relationship. If they gave more time for Bo and Teddy to be a couple (and more time for Spencer and Teddy to be apart), than I feel like that would've worked better. I'm not defending this ship. Just giving a possibility as to what the writers may have been going for. I do see why people were/are upset about them being canon, though. Because cheating is wrong, point blank.

spencer cheating in good luck charlie pissed me off soooo much, bc their relationship before that was really refreshing. there was p much no insecurity or drama, they just liked each other from the start and were a good couple... and then the writers or whoever decided they needed more unnecessary drama. it couldve been such a nice change from the usual tv show relationships with drama every single episode, and they couldve set up a lot of comedic moments and plotlines from a drama-free relationship like that

I think even what Miley did could be considered cheating. She knew Jesse had feelings for her and she still got closer to him, writing a personal love song alone with him and telling him she wanted to kiss him but couldn't because she was dating Jake. Then she told both guys she was going to choose between them... If she had chosen Jesse at that point, would it have been more obvious that she cheated on Jake and left him for Jesse? Another Disney Channel that is problematic are Chuck and Trish from Austin and Ally. Austin & Ally is one of my all time favorite shows and it’s my comfort show. I love Auslly as much as every other fan does, but I wish that the fandom had more variety with other characters and other ships. I feel like Trish in particular always got the short end of the stick when it came to love interests on A&A. Trent led her on, lied to her face, had another girlfriend behind her back, and manipulated her to be Austin’s backup dancer. Sure, he apologized, but his “apology” was more of a sorry he got caught and not because he showed any actual remorse for his actions. Roger seemed like a decent enough guy, but I hardly know anything about him so I can’t actually judge him. TW: S**ual assault and domestic violence Trish ended up marrying Chuck, who was creepy and rapey and flirted aggressively with her. He looked at Trish more like a sex object or a piece of property than an actual person. If A&A wasn’t a kids’ show, Chuck would have probably gotten Trish drunk or slipped her drugs and then he would have taken advantage of her and sexually assaulted her (or at least tried to). Either that or he would physically, verbally, or emotionally abuse Trish. Jace was literally the only decent love interest Trish ever had. He was such a sweet guy who cared for her and knew what she liked, accepted her with wide open arms, bought her that nice chair, and wasn’t upset about her bringing Chuck to prom. It's very common for overweight characters to not get happy love interest because they're the "joke character" and "unattractive" And of course there was Dez as the joke character but that doesn't mean Trish wasn't either They kinda also played in Latina stereotypes by making her lazy and napping a lot they kinda played on the lazy Mexican stereotype But she also simultaneously always working everywhere and being kinda unappreciative if it like the stereotype of Latin americans stealing jobs in America And then ofc the sassy Latina part as well. This is likely just me, but Teddy should have ended up with Bo. Especially given how Spencer and Teddy getting back together just never made sense. While not as bad as Nick, the Disney Channel had some frustrating relationships. I think the worst of them all was Cody and Bailey from Suite Life on Deck, looking back it really does take up more of the show than it should have, and their constant drama felt really toxic. And I did mention, I think Cody Martin's character derailment is almost as bad as Justin Russo's, only I find Cody to be worst tbh, especially how he treats Zack, London, and even Bailey. Cody REALLY became a massive prick. Bailey could be annoying too tbh, but outside of the movie, I can't remember much she did that was bad. Be interesting to see a video on how toxic Cailey was and the derailment of Cody's character.

Cody also becomes more egotistical, self-centered, and abrasive, namely towards Zack, and acts like a sexist misogynistic jerkass toward Bailey. Then once they become a couple, not long after Cody starts to show his misogyny against women. In the episode Roomies (where Marcus first debuts), Cody is pissed off simply because he can't stand the fact that a female (especially his partner) is more athletically inclined, then displays levels of toxic masculinity toward Bailey because he can't stand her being stronger than him and gets pissed that she beats him at everything. In Kitchen Cassanova, he mistreats Bailey in comparison to all the females in his cooking class, and the response he gives is sooo POOR! Yes, you don't want to show favoritism to your spouse in a class where other people are present, but rather than simply just show no bias he actively treats her worse than the others and is perfectly fine with all those girls coming onto him when it's obvious how much they are using the class as an excuse to hit on him! Then when this causes a scuffle between Bailey and another girl, only Bailey is singled out for the fight! In Lost at Sea, simply to prove he's smarter than Bailey, he sabotages the sail on their boat which gets them lost at sea over wounded pride, then gets jealous of Zack when he's using his survival skills to help everyone on the island just because Bailey was showing Zack appreciation for his skill. So, Cody basically was willing to strand everyone on an island by sabotaging their sail over petty jealousy to prove he's better than Bailey. This is what I always HATED about Cody, whenever he couldn't be the best he just sulks and whines about how he's being wronged, even though Zack is the twin who honestly has more to be envious about, which is actually used to develop his character. What's even worse is we have annoying Cailey drama, on top of that we're supposed to feel sorry for Cody simply because Bailey shows appreciation for Zack's survival skills. Even though it was his ego that got them stranded and puts all the blame for his frustration on Zack. In fact, the irony I found was that in Suite Life on Deck, Zack becomes a better person while Cody becomes a worse person, and when he's with Maya learns to not be a womanizer, yet Cody does become one, even toward Bailey! In Marriage 101 it showcases why them as endgame is terrible, when the class is given a project to simulate Marriage, Cody displays how whiny and demanding he is, forcing Bailey to essentially pamper him and they spend the episode just arguing (as a side note, all of these examples listed have really back and forth arguing between Cody and Bailey, which makes them both obnoxious) My Sister's Keeper, arguably his worst appearance in the show, Cody is a full-on jerkass toward his roommate Woody, when he learns that his sister is attractive. (This happened during Cailey's breakup) to which Cody displays Zack's old womanizing personality and only goes out with Woody's sister simply out of shallowness. While treating Woody like crap btw, then only decides to dump her when she turns out to be a female Woody, because that doesn't make him shallow and unlikable at all. This is even worse when Cody reveals in the play episode that he carried feelings for Bailey even after the breakup, so he wanted to date another woman while having feelings for his ex! It literally takes Bailey's reaction to him making a play to spite her that he was in the wrong in breaking up with her! This also isn't mentioning other episodes where Cody (and Bailey tbh) are annoying, other examples include Smarticle Particles with how they treat London, Model Behavior, The Defiant Ones, and Senior Ditch Day!

@@Surgemaster2012 Smarticle Particles is the episode where Cody and Bailey made a bet that one of them can make London smart to make a B in her final. The main issue I have with this is how awful both Bailey and Cody are toward London, they essentially gaslight London into thinking she's smart by playing off a placebo, and rather than it be to actually showing London is capable it is all placed off of a bet between the two. She was basically being used just to see which one of them can make her perform better than the other. With Kitchen Cassanova, Cody's "apology" feels fake, because when class is over and Bailey confronts Cody about how all the girls in his cooking class are falling all over him and using the class as an excuse to flirt with him, despite Bailey outright saying she's his girlfriend, Cody's response after Bailey discusses how repulsed she felt is an exaggerated "guffaw Yeah" followed by an "all of them?" as if he found that attractive! Theres an Indian adaptation of Good Luck Charlie called Best of Luck Nikki in which teddy (dolly in the Indian version) ever ended up with Spencer (Ritesh in the Indian version) instead they added other boyfriends and honestly, i prefer that version. One thing about the Hannah Montana episode with the two scenes, it could've possibly been because of something Disney channel does or had done every so often. Heck, Nickelodeon even did it a few times. Every so often, they'd have a special episode and have the audience vote to decide what would happen. Sometimes, it was something like choosing which character should end up with the main character in question. The one I remember from Disney is Liv and Maddie, where there were two guys pining for Maddie's affection were her sister's co-star and her ex-boyfriend. I don't know if they ever showed an unreleased scene where she chose the co-star over her ex to prove this, but that's just my theory. I do agree that it was very abrupt how it was handled. Other shows like Wizards of Waverly Place and Liv and Maddie handled it better. Heck, Hannah Montana handled it better when she got together with Jesse after leaving Jake. There was enough time to understand it. He was there. Spencer . . . wasn't. Also, can we talk about the phenomenon in Disney channel shows where the main character's ex's ex ends up dating the main character's sibling or friend? This happens in both Good Luck Charlie AND Wizards of Waverly Place. The girl Spencer cheats on Teddy with becomes P.J.'s girlfriend and Mason's ex in WoWP, Juliet (played by the same girl who plays Teddy), becomes Justin's girlfriend. It's a very, very weird thing that happens in these shows and I just don't understand it. However, I find myself rooting for those couples MORE than the main character with their relationship. EDIT: Also, it's not the first time two co-stars dated and that being the reason why they stay together on the show. Liv and Maddie did the same thing and she was engaged to him for years. Only for them to break up and Dove Cameron going to date one of her co-stars from Descendants.

I will say with both of them, the idea of fate makes sense. As a former Highschooler (can't believe I had to say that LOL!), highschoolers tend to look for confirmation bias when it's something they really want. Think of, "If I'm supposed to go to this college/university, the wind will scatter the leaves on the ground" but in terms of relationships. The most basic events (like wind blowing leaves around), become a "sign" since the person really wants to do date someone and *only* that person. They're not thinking of breaking up with them, and because of that they leave it to fate since fate is a permanent thing. I doubt that's what the creators and crew working on these shows were going for, but it can still be used as a lesson for teens, especially teenage girls, who are crushing on guys. In terms of Miley, something that wouldn't matter since it happened millions of times (the wind blowing a paper towards her) became a sign because of the situation she was in. She went with Jake because it was a sign to her, only for her to be cheated on. You can argue the same with Teddy. Teddy's relationship with Spencer was good to see, not because of the love, but due to how realistic the situation is. Teddy knows Spencer is bad news, but because of a random psychic, her perspective changed. The psychic could easily be replaced with a friend or Teddy's own feelings (and if it was a Disney show, it would be full of "I must have did something that caused him to cheat," "Maybe he did that to see if he really loved me," etc), and would still lead to her perspective on Spencer changing. She's in high school, so he's still her "one true love"/first boyfriend and all of that, so it makes sense she would put him on a pedestal by giving him another chance (because who the hell would really reject someone only because of his laugh? Smh, dude was doomed from the start!). I'm not saying I agree with Teddy and Spencer getting back together. I have yet to be in a relationship, but I have seen relationships around me have similar things happen. Not every kids TV relationship has to be perfect. There're a range of relationships out there, and it's important to see the difference between healthy and unhealthy ones and ultimately how our desire to be with someone else so much can hurt us since we have to ignore red flags in order to get that "sign" or series of "signs". BUT they should make it clear that they're showing an unhealthy relationship, not romanticize it. Sorry for the long comment, I wanted to make sure I was thorough!

I always hated Amy The line "I really hope this next [child] is a girl." When she saw PJ do something dumb never sat well with me. She basically admitted she believes boys are dumb by default so she doesn't bother. She essentially gave up on PJ and Gabe. Though the worst thing she did in the show was when her family didn't want to do a group performance, so she hired people to pretend to be her family for that performance behind their backs. She sees her own family as nothing more than accessories for her own ego.

Suite life on deck has a Cody Bailey cheating plot line, although it didn’t actually happen it was a misunderstanding. Life with Derek also has Casey’s endgame partner cheat on her. And wizards of waverly place has Alex’s endgame partner say he is in love with someone else while with her, although he doesn’t cheat. But yes disney loved this idea of their “soulmates” cheating or things close to it

I don't think Disney should be portraying cheating unless they're also going to depict why the cheating happened. Cheating never just happens there's always a reason behind it. You could be bored with the relationship. You could feel disrespected in your relationship. You could feel less than and still seek more. You could be settling and still looking for a better option. My point being you cheated by should not be the whole premise of a cheating plot. I just wish I could see growth from both protagonist and antagonist

i really hated how when teddy was with Bo and he has to leave for work the plot/joke of the episode is that she’s not really sad about it and is falling out of love with bo because he’s too close to her dad and genuinely interested in pest control as a career. it just felt really sad like Bo was very sweet and caring and there’s not a lot of teenage boys who are so sure of themselves and ambitious enough to pour themselves into a career that they love but they know others look down upon. i just felt like bo was a great love interest for her and they just randomly spin it so that teddy suddenly hates all these things she already knew about him so that she could get back together with spencer. i just wish they wouldn’t have done that or at the very least make bo more unlikeable so that it’s not so disappointing when she dumps him for a cheater

They literally just did this on High School Musical The Musical The Series. I loved Sebastian and Carlos. They were my favorite couple in the show. But I felt that they got back together way too soon after Sebastian cheated with Big Red. Also, watching this as an adult I realize that Jake and Miley you are a very toxic couple from the start.
