The kids that saw Snow White in 1937 are in their late 80s and 90s now. It's amazing to realize that.

I personally love "Bambi," but I just love animals. Just watching a bunch of stylized animals move across the screen was thrilling for me as a little kid. Nowadays, "Bambi" is a meditative film for me, filled with amazing colors, animation, musical score, and it set the stage for other enviro-fables like "Princess Mononoke" -another of my favorite films. It's a source of inspiration. I probably would have loved "Fantasia" just as much for its "Rite of Spring" sequence if we'd had a VHS copy back in the 90s, though I would have sat there mumbling about inaccuracies. Yeah, I was one of THOSE kids.

Agreed. I watched Bambi with my son a few days ago and thought it was incredible. It's less a narrative story than a "seasons-of-life" portrait. My expectations for what I remember thinking was a "little kids movie" were blown away.

My top 5 of Disney golden age: 5. Dumbo 4. Bambi 3. Fantasia 2. Pinocchio 1. Snow White and the seven dwarves

1. Pinocchio - 10/10. Other than how it randomly stops becoming a musical literally halfway through, this is a virtually flawless movie. It has some of the best cinematography ever seen in animation, and the leap in storytelling quality over Snow White is massive to me. People like to look at episodic storylines as a negative thing, but Pinocchio shows how you can use that format to build upon the previous sequence and drive the narrative forward. 2. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - 9/10. There's some padding here and there, especially in the first half, as you feel the story men are trying to find their footing, but when it's good, it's amazing. 3. Fantasia - 8/10. A film I think objectively is Walt's greatest achievement even if I don't quite love it. Some sequences work better than others (sorry, but Rite of Spring bores me), but there's no denying how innovative this film is. 4. Bambi - 8/10. I've got to admit I disagree with Dave on this one. What Bambi lacks in plot, it makes up for in emotion and atmosphere. I don't see how this movie's structure can be seen as confusing when it's so neatly compartmentalized between fall and winter for childhood and spring and summer for adulthood, and the whole movie is building up towards the threat of man and Bambi taking up the mantle as the Great Prince. 5. Dumbo - 7/10. This is a sweet movie, but it's never been one of my favorites. I know Walt said that for every laugh, there must be a tear, but this movie kind of favors the tears more than anything and is borderline cruel to me. I also find the editing in it rushed even by Disney standards. I'm looking forward to seeing the Silver Age video since that's actually my favorite era of Disney animation.

My sisters and I watched Bambi a lot when we were young (no idea why). We liked it. I think our parents framed it as a story about life, and introduced how people hunt, not all animals live forever but deserve respect, fire safety, etc. we always enjoyed it! Fantasia was our favorite though.

Pinocchio is scarier than Bambi, in fact it's one of the scariest of all Disney films for children. I think that of all the films of the golden era, Pinocchio is the best combination of great animation and great storytelling. To me it's the best film of that era. With that said, my second favorite is Bambi. Yes it is episodic, but it plays out to me as something akin to nature film. It has the most consistently beautiful animation of the 5 films to the point where you feel as though you are watching an impressionistic painting come to life. Visually it is truly a masterpiece. Videophile's should love it

My personal rankings 5: Fantasia I never watched this as a kid and once I did see it almost bored me, yeah sure it's pretty and the music is nice but it's not my taste of animation 4: Dumbo Also I don't recall to watch it as a kid (I might be wrong thou) but I only remember the pink elephants on parade segment when I did watched it 3:Snow White It remains an inspiration to me that they were able to make a full feature film using cells and paintings. I only like the dwarf's parts since the rest of the movie is a bit dull at times 2: Pinocchio This movie was such a classic since my gma had it on Tape, it keeps me on my edge of my seat with it's beautiful characters and storytelling and now I can appreciate it's animation and colors 1: Bambi I can't express how much I love this movie! Even though one of the slower storytelling films it has beautiful animation and music that kept me watching. Also has someone who lives in a temperate forest I love seeing the critters that I can see in my backyard but in a cute animation! 👌👌👌 Also call me crazy but Bambi's mother death scene never hurt me, even at a young age I knew that it's just the circle of life... big oof

Least to best: 5. Pinocchio. I actually think this movie would be a lovable classic if not for the donkey scene. I still don't rewatch the movie because of that. I thought it was so disturbing and scary. I love the characters of Geppeto, Jiminey, Pinocchio, the Blue Fairy, the kitten, and the goldfish. They are characters I found charming... but the movie ruined me ever wanting to experience it again because of how graphic and horrifying the donkey scene is. 4. Bambi. I still love this movie, honestly all the golden age movies except Pinocchio are ones I rewatch, but Bambi is one I don't revisit quite as often. 3. Dumbo. It's just cute and I like the emotions in it. 2. Fantasia. I often just turn this on to relax and watch or to have on in the background. It's so beautiful and the music is amazing. 1. Snow White. I adore the dwarves (especially Grumpy) and Snow White's kindness and love of animals makes me like her a lot despite being a simplistic character. And the Evil Queen is awesomely wicked. I was terrified of her as a kid but I find her so cool.
@steveliveshere

This is similar to my thinking except I have Bambi before Dumbo just because I'm so impressed with the melding of the animation with the Japanese-inspired watercolour backgrounds. I actually love the Dickey transformation scene. For Pinnocchio’s fault is its narrative isn't paced nearly as well as the others. Even Fantasia gels better for me. Snow White is one of the best pieces of story editing I've seen in ANY movie.

5. Fantasia- I actually haven’t seen this film, hence I can’t comment on it. I tried sitting down to watch it but the opening scene just didn’t do anything for me. 4. Dumbo- a pretty great film but I didn’t really get all that invested in the characters. Still though, enjoyable to watch all the same. 3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs- I remember loving this as a kid. Not so much today and probably because I’m not a big Disney princess fan. But the animation and story are really great. 2. Bambi- even though it doesn’t have much of a narrative, it’s a brilliant story about growing up. The scene where his mother is shot, and then the film cutting to Bambi as an adult was an excellent illustration of the death of childhood. Brilliant animation and the character of Bambi is very lovable to me. 1. Pinocchio- I absolutely adore this film. It’s my favourite Disney movie overall, not just out of the golden era. The animation is the most stunning 2D animation I’ve seen to date, and I absolutely adore the character of Pinocchio and his journey and character development throughout the film.

From all of the films from the Disney Golden Age, my all time favorite films were Bambi and Dumbo as they were the movies I enjoyed watching as a Kid and also I loved animals. But I still enjoyed all the films including Snow White and Pinocchio. Also aside from seeing “The Sorcerer’s Aprentice” and bits and pieces of the different Fantasia segments on KZbin I am one of the few people who haven’t watched the original Fantasia. Looking forward to your future videos and which Disney Animated films are ranked.

A very good ranking. Not one I agree with but I certainly understand your points. Here's my ranking. 5. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White is the Disney film I have the most respect for but is one i find to be very boring when looking back on it. It feels like a short fairytale stretched out to a roughly seventy to eighty minute narrative. The result is a film that feels like mostly filler that hurts my enjoyment of the film big time. I wouldn't call it bad, just dated. 4. Bambi I didn't find this film to have a strong narrative and I find it disappointing that Bambi's mother's death becomes irrelevant after that famous scene. It's mostly a cute film but the animation is fantastic and the atmosphere for the different seasons is so beautiful and warm. 3. Dumbo I find this film's narrative to be very disjointed and its portrayal of the circus to be confusing, is it a whimsical place to make Disney’s audience smile and laugh? Or is it a cruel form of entertainment? Despite these issues, Dumbo is so cute to watch, I enjoyed the crows, and the moments between Dumbo and his mother are so tender and flawless, it's okay. 2. Pinocchio This is a great film with a strong narrative and brilliant animation. A film that shows the darkness of the world and in a good way to help teach kids of being cautious of potential danger, plus its lessons of being a good person is very well handled as the film shows the consequences of being naughty in a number of ways. I love this film to bits. I agree with the guest critic from Roger Ebert's Worst films of 1999 video. A kid's first film should be magical like Pinocchio, not some uninspired, boring, and patronizing trainwreck like Pokemon The First Movie. 1. Fantasia This film is a masterpiece of experimental animation, a film that takes you on a journey through time and space exploring history, fantasy, and mythology. It's a memorable and phenomenal experience full of ideas, colours, tones, and moods. Without a doubt one of my Top 5 favourite animated films and one of my favourite films in general.

I’m grateful that Irrelevant BMB realizes that Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is dated more than Dave Lee (I do like that guy a lot, but sometimes, I feel like I have to make disagreements with him and see if he will trust them), but considering the fact that like us, he really loves the rest, it really makes me scratch my head/confused why he respects Snow White so much because he never explained why. Maybe it’s because of how well it’s animation holds up and the simplicity of the film making it work very well emotionally and artistically.

I definitely think Dumbo's depiction of the circus was meant to invoke that it is a cruel form of entertainment, especially back then. But even if you consider the possible reason that certain actions were taken by the people in the movie, the story is told through the eyes of a baby elephant that doesn't understand what's happening. So the scary aspects of the circus are dialed up several notches.

I think the lack of any real plot is what I love about Bambi. In a universe filled with evil villains and princesses and brave heroes, here you just have this little slice of life film about a deer and it's never more complicated than that. A lot of these Golden age Disney movies where more focused on making you feel things than telling a story and this I feel is the prime example of that. The joy of falling in love when he's bouncing through the clouds, the sorrow when he looses his mother, the pure rage when that other Faline is being attacked and the fear in that bloody pheasant scene. Nothing's over dramatised. Nothing's portrayed as more important than it actually is. It's just life and utterly I adore it.

The reason I enjoy Bambi the most out of the era is because it has so much depth in its story on top of having brilliant artistry. It’s a film about the circular nature of life, decades before Lion King would explore the topic, as well as a compelling coming of age tale that talks about the different relationships we share with our fathers and mothers, our loss of innocence, how life is unforgiving, and what role we humans play in our environment. Man is purposely never shown bc we are supposed to view ourselves as the villains of the story. And this is all told to us through the visuals alone, which is what makes the film so great. It’s pure cinema, the same way the latest Mad Max film was pure cinema, and that film was also heavily criticized for having apparently “no story.” But both of these films do have story, but Bambi doesn’t tell that story through any of the dialogue, it’s all in the editing, the composition, and the animation. To me, Bambi is one of the most gripping thrillers ever made, let alone one of the best animated films of all time; a culmination of everything Disney had been working towards throughout the era and everything he sought to achieve with the medium.

I still remember being very small sitting on her water bed with some sort of snack watching that movie. Since then its always meant a lot to me, and I also feel like it's overlooked as a masterpiece. I don't remember much of what I watched when I was really small but I remember that film. The greatest thing about these first five movies is they're all completely different from each other - then came the long, dry period after the war when Disney desperately needed a hit and decided to go back to the elements of his first big hit 'Snow White' - and there we see the appearance of the 'Disney Formula.'

5. Fantasia While I do enjoy certain segments and can 100% appreciate what it does, I prefer more of a cohesive narrative. I can only take this one, maybe, once a decade. 4. Dumbo A very sweet movie with some beautiful, tender moments and a great third act, but the in-between bits drag a little. 3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs My appreciation of this movie might influence how much I enjoy it overall. It's crazy how this was the first of its kind. I think it holds up nicely. Sure, there's a lot of filler, but it's entertaining filler. 2. Pinocchio One of my favorites when I was little. I view it through a nostalgic lense, but also, it's just a very well-made film. I've never been bothered by an episodic nature in a movie and the characters in this one stand out the most from all 5 films. 1. Bambi Interesting how the same people who love Fantasia find this one boring. It's like a painting come-to-life. Not only do I love animals, I also love getting lost in the aesthetic of this beautiful world. It brings such a peace, despite the more tense moments.

I've seen a few minutes of Pinocchio and loved it, so I need to go back and give it another go. Haven't seen any of Dumbo or Fantasia, but I'll probably go and give them a go. Bambi- It always spoke to me in a spiritual way, the colours the music and atmosphere is what makes me love it so much. 3. Dumbo- I love Dumbo, his Mother and mouse friend but can't bare to ever watch it again because of the cruelty. I love the song baby mine but it' not enough to give the film a higher ranking. 4. snow white and the seven dwarfs- I can not say that I will ever watch it again but I can appreciate it for it's animation. 5. Pinocchio- This is one I've never liked, there are way to many things that freak me out and the subject matter is to dark in a mycological way of being slightly traumatised as a child.

I realized I've only seen two of these: Snow White and Fantasia. I grew up in the late fifties and sixties, and thus saw these two at theater revivals (30th anniversaries), already in Jr hi and hi school, respectively. By the time videos became a thing, I was well beyond being interested in watching "old cartoons" (and too young to be nostalgic enough yet!) but growing up in the Disney-saturated generation I did, I felt like I knew everything I needed to know about Dumbo, Pinocchio, and Bambi. Now I'm beginning to realize I need to take a real look at them! (As a kid, my favorite Disney animation was "The Sword and the Stone", "101 Dalmatians" came in a close second)

I remember watching Dumbo at my preschool and feeling so sad durung the scene with his mom being locked in the trailer. I could hardly take it! I don't think I've seen it since. I want to though. Before seeing the remake. I don't remember Pinocchio very well. I watched Bambi a million times growing up. I disagree with you about the story. I like that it's just his story of growing up. It works for me. The animation and cuteness is superb. When I was a kid Fantashia made me sleepy. When I got older I started to appreciate it's beauty. I don't know where I rant them but Snow White is number 1! Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is so perfect for what it is. There's just something so pure about her and the seven, that they've always made me feel so nice. I've always imagined that Snow White and the Dwarves remained great friends after the ending.😄 Plus I love the songs!

Bruh... you put Bambi at last? That movie is not only a masterpiece, but Walt Disney's favorite film. What you clearly didn't get about the story is that it's about the life of this deer, it's about life in general. The film is supposed to make the animals and Man represent something in human life, whether Bambi is supposed to be you, Thumper is the best friend, Feline is the first crush, and Man is just death in many forms such as illness or disaster.

Good movie, but the faults in it are the same you said. Half the movie is silence and music. 2. Snow White. Great. Only thing that keeps it 2 and not 1 is that the characters aren't as endearing as... 1. Pinocchio. Literally everything you said about this film is the reason it's the best. 5. Dumbo - It's cute and baby mine is the saddest disney song. I have always disliked the second half of the movie, it's a bit too rushed. But from the beginning to the pink elephants, this movie is good. 4. Fantasia - Some segments aren't that good, but the biggest problem is definitely the narrator. He should be just deleted. Overall, a beautiful piece of art. 3. Bambi - This is just a really beautiful classic. This has many memorable moments, especially the scene where Bambi sees his father for the first time. Just pure beauty without any dialogues, wow. 2. Snow white and the seven dwarfs - I really love the characters, especially the dwarfs. This was actually one of my fav movies as a kid. 1. Pinocchio - I love how dark this is. And this is definitely the most teaching movie from Disney.

I couldn’t possibly rank these numerically at least because there are so few in this era of Disney films. Dumbo and Bambi I have not watched as much in comparison as I never owned either in my now lost VHS collection. They are wonderful films, but I prefer the others for the scope of their world’s. Snow White has a strong cast of heroes and villains, and is a cornerstone of the animated fairytale musical. Pinocchio is closest to my favorite story based film of this era simply for the scope of the adventure and action. Fantasia is something else entirely. One of the longest run times for an animated feature let alone a Disney one. It is not the least bit pretentious, showing how animation and music can meld into one beautiful abstract piece with stunning visuals and eye catching representation through characters and forces of nature and of light and darkness. Absolutely my favorite of the Disney Golden Era.

My personal ranking: 5. Fantasia. Not really much storyline here, just a bunch of montages, albeit admittedly well-drawn. Also that black centaur that Disney has since tried to pretend never existed, but if they really need to censor it, it should have never been included in the first place. I haven't watched this movie in years, and when I do, I only really watch the Mickey Mouse part. Also I hope I'm not alone in thinking this was the first Disney movie ever made (when I was a kid) because of Mickey. 4. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. You have to hand it to them, for their first ever animated movie it's pretty good animation-wise. The Dwarfs are the best part, each one with their own personality and that makes them memorable. There's been so many versions released, chances are if you were asked to name one or even all of the Seven Dwarfs you'd most likely say Dopey or Grumpy or whatever. I haven't even watched this movie in at least two decades, and I don't intend to either. The Prince barely had any screentime, I found Snow White herself to be a bit on the bland side (with an irritating voice) and the storyline's a bit boring TBH. 3. Dumbo. A bit of a hard decision here, I really liked this movie. I'm probably one of the only people who will remember it for things OTHER than the pink elephant scene, which although really well-animated, I often skip past. The Baby Mine scene (a big tear-jerker) and Dumbo's friendship with Timothy in general are really great to watch. The reason why I placed this movie third was because it comes off as controversial, and I'm not just talking about the crows. The whole scene with the clowns forcing Dumbo to be part of their act and putting him in a fire is just animal cruelty, and a reminder of why I hate clowns/circuses in general. Also, Tim Burton sucks for even THINKING of remaking this. 2. Bambi. As a 90s kid, I had to go through Mufasa's death scene a LOT. I didn't watch Bambi until a LOT later, and when I found it it pre-dated The Lion King by over 50 years, I knew that kids of VARIOUS ages had been hit pretty damn hard with the death of Bambi's mother. That being said I really liked this movie, it was so lovely seeing lots of cute little animals. The artwork is very nice too. I also liked how they kept the Great Prince mysterious, and it's only revealed in the middle of the movie that he's Bambi's father. It makes you wonder what their relationship was like. This eventually gets revealed in a sequel released over 60 years later, which I would recommend watching, it's actually a pretty decent sequel. 1. Pinocchio. Alright, my top three are all REALLY good movies, it's hard to choose. Pinocchio has a large range of characters and I found several of them to be very memorable for various reasons. It's also worth mentioning that said characters only really get a certain amount of screentime and the viewers are left ambiguous wondering what happened to them. Is the Coachman still kidnapping children? What is Stromboli doing now that he has lost his star performer? Will Lampwick be stuck as a donkey forever? And so on. When you hear the name Pinocchio the Disney version always comes to mind where the protagonist is all sweet and innocent unlike his original counterpart. Other adaptations have been a lot closer to the book. While this movie is a good example of Disneyfication, it does have its dark moments (The scene with the Coachman's face and the Pleasure Island scene in general come to mind).

By putting something “at the bottom of the list” does not mean I don’t like it, or I think it’s bad. By the nature of a ranking _something_ has to be at the bottom. It just simply means I like the other movies slightly more. And by slightly, I mean, most of these movies only beat eachother out by a whisker for me. By the way - you don’t need to agree, and I never ask anyone to. That’s the beauty of these films, we all find love and connection to them in our own different ways, and that’s what makes them so special! ☺️

What must be put in context about your Bambi analysis is that the story itself is a dark one. Salten said that his book was NOT for children. It was meant for a more older reader. Quite a bit of the book was left out including the knowledge that Faline was Bambi's cousin. Her mother was named Ena and an older sibling to Bambi's mother. Faline had a fraternal twin named Gobo who was not a strong fawn and would eventually be raised by man after Gobo floundered in the snow during a winter hunt. There was no forest fire in the book. So what is being portrayed by the film is a basic coming-of-age story and discovering along the way that Bambi's father was the Old Prince and that Bambi would take up the mantle of a protector once the OP would bow out to seek his final resting place. That Bambi's mother would be killed in the book and film shows how uncertain life really is. The main difference is that in real nature if you survive you may live to breed. If not you don't. There are no time outs or do overs. No one is going to come to your rescue. You're on your own. Disney romantised the book and film for the happily-ever-after endings he was known for. He always had the underdog succeed despite all that were against them. I'm 67 and this film has always been my favorite as is the book. I recommend the original book to your attention as well as the sequel Bambi's Children the first fawns he and Faline had.

Fantasia: If this was made for kids it missed the mark, it takes an adult to appreciate the artistry of this picture, because the music and the animation are amazing but as a kid, I found it boring and unwatchable, now that I'm older I see how beautiful it truly is. 4. Pinocchio: Never been my favorite fairy tale so not a film I particularly liked. The animation though is good. 3. Dumbo: Good movie but a bit short 2. Snow White: The first animated film and a good. one 1. Bambi: Stunning animation and the story is quite good to the point where its been given a sequel, and a film I don't mind watching again.

I am sorry but I can’t see how you can knock Bambi for not having much plot and then put Fantasia as number one and say you don’t know any other film that does so much storytelling with music. Music is a crucial aspect of Bambi. The score lines 99% of the film and the 2 times the film is without music after man appears are much more powerful for it. Also it only has 950 words of dialogue meaning it really is just the visuals you praised and the music carrying the film- and if you pay attention you see just how intertwined the visuals and the music are. Man is one of the greatest villains in film history and isn’t even seen. His presence is felt because of how others react to him and the dramatic three note motif that drives His musical theme. I think judging Bambi for not having character arcs is just like judging Fantasia for not having character arcs. I think you’re watching the film looking for the wrong things. Think of it more like a 70 minute long Fantasia short, or better yet, a series of several Fantasia shorts who have a connected through line of being themed around the 4 seasons and how they affect nature and the life of this one deer as we jump around to focus on key moments of his development on his way to reaching adulthood. Edit: reading that back it comes off as a bit pretentious and passive aggressive but I still stand by my points. I don’t personally enjoy Fantasia and am bored by it but whenever I say that opinion I always asterisk it by saying for what it’s trying to be, it’s an artistic masterpiece. I’m just not a fan. I have no problem with someone who similarly is bored by Bambi yet respects it artistically, but I just feel your criticism of Bambi was overlooking some key aspects of it and are a tad hypocritical when paired with the praise for Fantasia for things that Bambi also does well.
