Disney needs the to make a series based on Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse comic. Those were polar opposite of the mascot Mickey. Oswald should have his own series. Disney have not used him much since he was purchased. I was looking forward to Oswald new series.

Oswald was used. Just in another game. He is in Disney Dreamlight Valley. He is a character you can get from the DLC!!! He's got his own personality and quest lines. I'm surprised you didn't talk about him. I think he came out a couple months ago.

I was the biggest Oswald fan during the time this was rumored, and ofc still am but less so. We were all excited on twitter. Eric Bauza was also involved, I had thought he said he was voicing Oswald or hinted at it.

I've had this idea for a while that Oswald's personality should be a Mickey that let his global wide fame get to his head. The irony being that not a single person besides Ortensia (and maybe the Fab 5 if they want to have Oswald be a part of the Mickey and Friends™ brand) cares about him, which further drives his ego and his various schemes to gain the attention he craves that always lead to trouble.

Overall I really enjoyed watching this video and personally think that it’s the best and most in depth adaptation of this story. I still really want Disney to do something special with Oswald… Sure we did get the Epic Mickey remake but I still think there’s more potential to the character that Disney really doesn’t see much of. Despite Oswald not being used by Disney as much as he could there is still more hope for the character to return once again it’ll just take time for Disney to find a way for that possibility. Oddly enough Disney hasn’t done much of anything with Mickey either despite still owning later versions of the character alongside the trademarks so we’ll just have to wait and see how copyright laws affect these characters in the coming years.

Oswald was still used by Universal until his current owner "Walter Lantz" death in 1994 where they just forgot about him but still used his other creations like Woody Woodpecker, Andy Panda and Chilly Willy.

also i have to wonder with the announcment of the revival of the epic mickey franchise if maybe the issue we're seeing is actaully more to do with a possible style change that could be more easily copyrighted. afterall thats kinda what the farewell mickey mouse short was for in a way. they redesigned steamboat willie in a loving omage and used him in the last mickey mouse mini short from that series . i think the copyrighted that variant. what id love to see though is disney take advantage of the public domain for once. after all they just spent a bunch of money a few years back for that massive crossover for Rescue Rangers , and there was a ton of other companies stuff in that. imagine for a second how much they could do if they pulled in othershows with this style of animation and were like "hey , this is public domain now , we wont bother you if you want to use him but you need let us help you out with the development of the episode. " cuz hed fit real snuggly into something like cuphead or even if you want to go so far talk to sega . theyre all for wacky weird projects and the style of that game was directly inspired by the idea of rubberhose animation. heck even within disney ip hed fit real snuggly if they kept the epic mickey lore and started reintroducing older abandoned shows into the mix. like you said he has a personality thats fully untapped. imagine how much better a concept like house of mouse would have been if he was like overseeing the community of wasteland taking care of the theatre space. it open so much more wackiness. expanding even further its not like disney doesnt do crossovers that are weird already for tv. do something real zany like make the series about him hopping between shows trying to find his way home . that be cool as heck. theres so many options. and i think the same is true of the other cast of the game. the briefly lived comics showed he was buddy with Doc and Horace . so even if they wanna do a buddy comedy vibe why not pull one of them in (probably not doc i think that might be too complicated a situation ) even something a bit more out of left field could work , id love to see some way to mash unlikely character matchups together. maybe not on some epic adventure but a Looney Toons Show vibe . hed fit in great with some sort of premise like that. where the world isnt absent of cartoon hyjix but the everyday is also more front and center . such a shame. i think about all the work that went into getting him back, the few attempts to use him (he has like 2 shorts. a Christmas short and Get A horse ) , the comics, the attempt to bring him to different parks and it breaks my heart. i would have loved for them to have tried to use him for the 100 year anniversary properly instead of the feature we got but thats beyond us now.

The first disney “character” answer can change depending on what you consider a character. Techically, Disney’s first cartoons were the animals on his farm he drew growing up, but no one would ever include them. Julius the Cat is hard to call a original character since he was clearly a rip-off of Felix. I know Pete technically predates Oswald but his character has transformed so much over the years that it’s hard to consider him the same character as the one everyone knows today. When I use “character” I’m referring to a main feature role for a cartoon. Oswald was a high-selling cartoon intellectual property that is the first to fit that description.

He also lacked the whiskers that Felix had at the time and he was actually DRAWN by Walt Disney himself from what I heard. Also, it was Margaret Winkler- Walt’s distributor at the time, to tell him to change his design so he became a Felix rip-off. There’s images of the first design of Julius on the internet. He barley looked anything like Felix till Walt was allegedly told to change him. While you are right that Oswald was the first Disney character to be a solo star, him being “the first Disney character” is far from true. The first Disney characters are Julius and Alice from the Alice Comedies. Even though Alice was live action, I still consider her and Julius the first Disney characters. Not Oswald. If you want to be technical, you can’t even call Oswald a Disney character in those days. Rather, he was a Universal character. Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created Oswald for the sole purpose of giving Universal a star! Yes, he is a Disney character now but in those days, he was always owned by Universal!

Weather my point is believed in or not I would argue that the Alice in wonderland related stuff doesn’t technically count as it’s based on the original Alice through the looking glass story which wasn’t written by Disney at all based on my information even if Disney created his own characters for those animated segments. Additionally Pete the Cat(Disney’s Version) does predate Oswald based on my knowledge however as of currently Pete the cat seems to be more forgotten than Oswald ever was other than the epic Mickey titles and the occasional modern appearance. I’d still argue that Oswald counts more as Walt Disney himself thought of Oswald as his own character that was wrongfully taken of him with Mickey and Pete the cat acting as substitutes until Walt Disney’s company Disney as we know it today regained rights to the character which they had almost forgotten of but could never completely forget of Oswald with the character being extremely important to Disney history. Overall despite my points I believe it’s up for interpretation especially considering the fact that for years the Disney Company treated Mickey as their first character anyways.

@@JudeMckeever You do have a point. However, I will say this. Alice Comedies is different from Alice in Wonderland. I believe the Alice Comedies were just shorts of a live action girl who is named Alice that goes into the cartoon world and meets characters like Julius & Pete. It has nothing in common at all with Alice in Wonderland besides the whole dream thing or whatever. Alice Comedies was, I believe, first made at Walt Disney’s own studio. Sadly, this series isn’t as well known now as the Oswald series, which I am surprised about because that was the first appearance of Pete- Mickey’s arch-nemesis, who became more well known overtime. But whether or not you consider Alice Comedies the first true series of Disney, the fact does remain that Oswald was not officially owned by Disney until 2006. Yes, he was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks at the Disney studios but he was made so Universal can have a star. Oswald was always a Universal character. He was owned by Universal. I can see where the misconception that Oswald was once owned by the Disney company made from, but that’s not at all true. I really wish this myth would stop.

@ Never said that the Walt Disney company owned Oswald however in the words of Stan Lee another writer popular for his own reasons the writer is the one who creates a character. Additionally Universal only trademarked Oswald because they didn’t want Walt Disney’s involvement with the project not that they actually cared for the character at all they just wanted to be better than Disney so they stole his work… well that’s how it’s often implied anyways. Despite Pete the Cat first appearing in the Alice comedy’s he was made most famous for his other appearances along with Pete not even always being a cat as he was a bear in the Oswald shorts. Additionally I’m unsure of this last bit of information but I’m pretty certain the Alice comedy’s were actually named Alice and her adventures in wonderland or something like that which implies the stories relation the the later Disney work known as Alice in Wonderland.
