Mr. Bean is a British sitcom created by Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis, with Robin Driscoll.
Two theatrical feature-length films featuring Mr. Bean have also been released. The first film, Bean, was directed by Mel Smith, released in 1997 and followed the misadventures of Mr. Bean as he oversaw the transfer of Whistler's Mother to a Los Angeles art gallery. The second film, Mr. Bean's Holiday, was directed by Steve Bendelack, released in 2007 and followed Bean on an eventful journey across France for a holiday in the French Riviera to which, after a number of mishaps, culminates in an unscheduled screening of his video diary at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.
There has also been an animated TV series, spinoffs, live sketches, and commercials featuring the character. This video explores the creation of the character and traces his evolution to present day.

I remember an interview from a few years ago, where Rowan said he was going to retire Mr Bean because he was getting older and while seeing a middle aged man act like a child is funny, seeing an old man act as a child is sad. However, I'm glad he still brings Bean out occasionally, even if it's not full time.

Rowan is a national treasure over here in the UK. I watched Mr Bean as a kid, and now we’re introducing him to our own daughter. The Mr Bean Christmas special is still a hilarious favourite in our house. But I also love Blackadder: the fourth series on its own is one of the greatest British comedies ever made, and Edmund Blackadder is so far removed from the Mr Bean character that it makes it all the more funny. So glad he’s still going, we love you Rowan! 💖

I was the first of my friends to discover Mr. Bean on PBS as a kid. By the end of the summer, everyone in the neighborhood was watching it. It's rare to find shows in which both kids and parents can equally enjoy.

Bean's Holiday is a total classic, I can believe that the movie wasn't so popular in the states but the movie is Universal viewing in the U.K., You'd be very hard pressed to find someone who hasn't seen it. I don't think you've given that movie the credit it deserves in this review...

I've taught ESL for over 15 years and I love using clips of Mr. Bean. Because 1 the kids love it and 2 the humor is so universal you can use it as a starting point to create conversations with the students about what they saw.

Its not only the marketing, its used as the subtitle of the movie. I have my VHS and that line appears on all the logos for it, also in the movie poster when it released (thats why im surprised when Hat's off only said it was claled BEAN in the video). I dont know if that subtitle depends of the country or not. The spanish version uses it as the full name of the movie (just translated into spanish of course).

I do that too! Christmas morning I'm jumping and running around in circles. Every time I see a nativity scene, I just have to get my hands on it. When out on a date walking around, I dance next to a busker for change, I whip out my credit card to show the rest of the store what I've got. In restaurants, I've flicked many napkins before elegantly placing it in my lap. Cleaned fingernails with my zipper in public. Danced as if I were at Club Phut. I could go on. It explains why I'm fun to be around, never married, and completely happy because (like Mr Bean) I don't care what people I don't know think of me.

Sadly Johnny English never lived to it's potential. It has some highlights so here's my favorite scenes from each movie. 1) The Hospital Scene from first movie showing how effective Johnny can be in the right place. 2) Chase Scene in second movie. Pure Atkinson awesomeness and most badass spy scene ever. 3) Training scene at the beginning of the third movie. It shows probably best part of main character personality. He is supportive and confident mentor willing to teach kids some unusual thought process.

What makes Mr Bean popular is it's simplicity, taking away the lough track and replacing it with music would make it feel more sophisticated and cultured which may make people who's not part of that culture feel out of place or even threatened by it

A while ago, I read a comment on how Rowan can retire the character with a neat little sendoff. The comment said it should incorporate the age argument by having Mr. Bean in a retirement home, bored. He then gets up and starts committing some shenanigans like he usually did. I find that a very good sendoff idea if it ever happens.

Bean The Movie is such an amazing film. Howard Goodall's score for it is one of the all time great OSTs to any film and I ended up bawling my eyes out by the end because the music is so powerful. I don't get why Goodall isn't working on major films, he is incredible!

I loved Mr. Bean back in the 90's. I watched it at every opportunity on CBC in Canada. One of my favorite all time shows - it's not only funny but relaxing too lol, if that makes any sense. like the laugh tracks on old time shows, it never bothered me. To me it would just seem eerie without it. I remember one particular year they had a Mr. Bean marathon on New Years eve - one of the best New Years ever (the eve of 1995, if I remember correctly). I actually have old school home video footage of us watching it...good times and good memories. Oh and as for his return, I'd really just like to see him do another few seasons of the old school type of Bean. Just some wholesome episodes like he originally started off doing.

I wouldn't say that he's a 100% silent character. Sure, his physical comedy and exaggerated expressions speak for themselves, but it just wouldn't be Mr. Bean without his usual grunts, mumbles, and occasional full words punctuating some of his best bits. The cartoon I'm 50/50 about. It's not bad, but it really just feels like a hat on a hat. You have essentially a live action cartoon character, and even if he did act things out for the animators to animate, the fact that it IS a cartoon series just feels a bit redundant. That said, I do respect him feeling he's too old and not as able to perform as much physical comedy, preferring a cartoon series or movie instead.

Sometimes when he does manage to open his mouth and let out a couple words, I actually find it just as funny as his more physical stuff. I never fail to laugh at the Christmas episode where he hangs up his stockings, only to get another stocking inside and mutter "Ah. Christmas Socks." And of course the time he went to church and confusingly and lacking any rhythm squawks "HALLEHLUULIA" during the hymn just always busts me up.

I guess they need to compensate for the disconnect from the rigidity of live action to the anything goes animated world. I give them all the credit for trying to keep that wackiness in a wackier format. They certainly translated it quite well, and the cartoon is entertaining in its own right. They know that they can't quite capture the cartoonish man in a real world setting in cartoon form, so they have to exaggerate in other areas. I did enjoy what I've seen in the cartoon, but it doesn't quite compare to the live series.

I agree, TTBL is another underrated comedic gem. It only received mixed reviews when aired but actually was brilliant and has aged well. Not only was Rowan great in it as always, but the supporting characters were amazing, especially David Haig as Grim - still one of my favourite sitcom characters ever.

I prefer the Holiday movie over the first for the fact that there isn't an overabundance of dialogue. I think a whole lot of dialogue takes away from the mystique of the character, and the world he is in. Personal opinion of course. I do love the first movie and it does have some great scenes but it didn't feel like Mr. Bean completely just felt like a different movie that they dropped Bean into

I like your videos. I totally forgot about Mr Bean over the years. I was a theater nerd and we would watch him to get ideas about facial and body expressions. I'm now a 2nd grade teacher and one kid asked to watch the cartoon. The look on my face was in shock. Now we watch him every Friday. He always wins the votes even though they don't laugh. I find myself cracking up at them. They didn't understand the real one. But still glad to see he lives in a cartoon form as well.

Mr. Bean was CRAZY popular in India in the early 2000s. It was telecast on Pogo, Star Movies, Star World - every other entertainment channel. So its a huge part of my childhood. Great analysis. 💕

I've always been a bit shocked by the small number of Mr. Bean episodes. For a character so famous, I would expect to see a LOT more. Just goes to show ya how good the show is!

Thank you for the reminder! While this video was playing I frantically searched my DVD collection, hoping I hadn't once again lost the different DVDs thru my sometimes over- generous lending habits. They were all there! I was pretty worried! Love how he and his creative partners went from the verbal gymnastics of Black Adder to the mostly non-verbal Bean to Thin Blue Line to Johnny English to other characters. The opening of Bean tv show with the spotlight on cobblestones and Bean drop-in made me think "Ah, he's an alien! THAT explains it!" Glad you brought that up. Again, THANK YOU!

I'd argue that SpongeBob's current popularity is quite similar to Mr. Bean's 10-15 years ago. Thanks to old fans of the original series & films, as well as young fans of the cartoon interacting & sharing countless memes & images. I still remember people sharing those images of Mr. Bean's face photoshopped on to random celebrities, characters & babies. Then there were those countless edited videos of Mr. Bean saying Magic & YTPs that were popular around 2012.

I think i heard Rowan say in an interview where he's getting too old to play Bean character mainly because he doesn't want to see him get older. As well as the physical toll it takes for him to play the character. So he's definitely retired the character from live action.

9:01 the older, distingushed looking man beside Mr. Bean was played by the late, great Richard Briers who was a giant of British television comedy in the 1970s and 80s, best known for his famous sitcom 'The Good Life' about a man who quit office life to become self sufficient. It is really amazing to see two different generations of great British comedy actors onscreen at the same time like that.

We don't have laugh tracks in the UK. You just show it to an audience and record their reactions, upping and lowering the volume where you see fit for watching it at home

I think we all overlook the fact that he essentially is a mime. I love the character and understand the reason for not using that word is because it only belittles the character but aside from putting on the white makeup and striped shirt he’s pantomiming to the point you don’t lose anything if you push the mute button.
