Disney's Mufasa: Why, just why?

We have reached a level of brand exploitation that is just insane at this point with Disney's live action Mufasa. Coming this Christmas, Mufasa is a movie that no one asked for or cared about.
Exploring the origins of a character that had all of twenty minutes of screen time in the original movie, Mufasa will likely go through something of a retcon from the original film and try to convince us that instead of being the rightful king and a true leader of nobility, he was in fact, an imposter.
Join me as we discuss the Mufasa trailer and why this film, like so many other live action Disney remakes is going to be just as bad.

I Really Doubt Scar Will be Made into a Sympathetic Villain. It is a Marxist Story so Muffassa being Born with No Noble Blood is supposed to Make Him Superior and Prove We don't Need Bloodlines. Think of Rey Who is No Body Before She became a Palpatine-Skywalker. The Modern Company is Heavily Into Neo-Marxism and prefers to Dismantle Older Monarchical and Aristocratic Stories.

You summed it up perfectly. This movie has barely any story, no audience demand, and just looks boring and stale. The Lion King remake already sucked all the heart out of the original with its emotionless characters and nonexistent color palette. It only made money because Disney were coasting on the then-popularity of Marvel. If they released the exact same movie this year, it would tank, as Mufasa almost certainly will.

Lion King and Mufasa are NOT Live action. They are CGI. Calling a fully computer animated movie live action doesn't make it a live action, it makes it a lie action. LOL Live action requires live actors and there were none in Lion King (either version) or Mufasa. Jungle Book did have the one actor on screen, but everything else was animated, so that one was a hybrid (barely).

Prequels are always a high risk endeavor yet for someone reason they get greenlit even when there is no compelling story. Why studio executives insist on pretending that prequels are a safe investment and can be greenlit before they have a good finished script? It would have been far safer for them to have simply remade Lion King 2 and beefed up the story than to make a prequel that no one asked for.

Had this been a different time with better writers, the idea of a Mufasa who wasn't noble becoming King is a potentially interesting one. Imagine a sword in the stone premise, with Mufasa as young Arthur and Scar as Kay, his jealous brother. Mufasa proves his own worthiness to be king, while his brother is continually resentful, perhaps trying to undermine or kill Mufasa then begging for his brother's forgiveness, which Mufasa nobly (and tragically), grants. But we know Disney won't do that, since the writers love breaking down iconic father figures, and (despite the trailer), probably rewriting the motherly Sarabi as a kick ass girlboss as well! Hell, I bet that the white lions seen in the trailer will turn out to be evil racists! I'd love to be wrong, ten years ago, as a massive fan of the original Lion King (really enjoyed Simba's pride), I'd have been excited to see a story about Scar and Mufasa, but with everything Disney has done? Again, I challenge Disney to prove me wrong, but needless to say unless reviewers I trust give good reports that this is a decent story free of DEI, I'll be staying far away.

As someone who grew up watching the original movie and the sequel, I am extremely nervous this is going to tarnish the legacy this franchise has. Scar’s song Be Prepared has ALWAYS been one of my favorite Disney songs in general, especially with the dark imagery in one of the scenes that sadly got cut from the live action remake, which is supposed to give a frightening realism to the song and Scar’s ideologies. I wouldn’t mind Mufusa being a nobody orphan IF he didn’t have an entire speech in the original movie clearly saying they come from a long line of kings that have protected the Pride Lands. I’m really worried this movie is going to make Mufasa kinda a jerk towards Scar or something, and that’s what lead to Scar growing to hate his brother so much to kill him and his son.

My favourite Disney films are the classics and they're the ones I'm watching with my son. All those remakes are hollow, souless husks of what was great about Disney. Why would I watch something worse when I can just watch the original. I'm hoping they finally stop making money and start investing on real films with heart and real artistic direction. Until then, I can just watch the oldies again.

The pitch meeting must have been, forget any idea of story, this will be all about the message. We want a lioness to be the real leader, a true warrior queen, and everyone else just takes it. Oh, and we want Scar to be voiced by a white Englishman, just to make sure we can throw in a bit of racism as well.

If they took the basic idea and put it in a different movie, it wouldn't be awful. A peasant rising to leadership as a plot would have substance and a laudable message. But this? It risks being interpreted as a similar strain to The Last Jedi (the force is for everyone) and The Acolyte in terms of using an established property to jam in politics that don't mesh with the lore. If something doesn't mesh with the lore, write it as an unrelated project. If it's good, it should rise. But have the confidence to not prop everything up by tying it to an established property. You at least avoid the problem of a bait and switch - luring someone in and expecting them to smile as you mutilate the lore in ways that mess up beloved characters down the line. Mufasa as a title isn't great. Titles are meant to be framing devices. The marketing department can work with 'the lion king', 'star wars' or 'jaws'. But I wouldn't have recalled the name of the father character. Even after the video, I kept thinking it was 'Mustafa'.

I was previously watching a few of these so-called "Live-action" remakes on DVD or Blu-ray, and the only good thing that the 2019 Lion King one did to me was get me back into watching movies that I truely do get interested in, it in theaters with my parents. These ones have gotten so badly made by Disney that I will definitely boycott every future "live-action" remake that they next decide to make especially this prequel because of what's been revealed about it and because I'm already super hyped to watch the Sonic 3 videogame adaption movie that is being produced by Paramount. That movie is planned to release on the same day as this souless cash-grab will (December 20, 2024) if Disney doesn't decide to delay it because of how embarrased they would get at the box-office in ticket sales by that videgame adaption movie because soo many people are already soo anxious to finally see a trailer for it and can't wait for the theatrical release of the whole movie to happen, unlike this one.

I grew up with Disney back in the 90s/00s, watching just about every movie multiple times on VHS - Disney kinda shaped part of my life. But I've just refused to watch any of the live action movies. They just looks like cash grabs, trying to play on people's nostalgia. They just look soulless to me, but that's probably partially due to my love for the stylized animated style they used to have. (It had a lot more emotion and expression to them imo) Though I do have a friend who seems to be hyped for Mufasa, just because he absolutely love lions (lion furry), so he'll gobble up that without a second thought.

This is just like Rogue One, Solo, and the Cruella movie. Nobody asked for these movies. We don't need a movie for every side character. Remaking your old movies is boring. Make something new. They can't set another animal Story in Africa? Or South America? Some where else? Whats gonna happen in this movie? Is Scar gonna die? No. Is Scar gonna change his plans? No. Movies like these are so boring.

The original Lion King was essentially a male "coming of age" story with an important father-son relationship at its core. Judging from recent and not-so-recent Disney movies, there is absolutely no chance that they will do justice to this original story. Mustafa was pretty much a token character for the strong dad, who knows everything and fixes everything. Simba needed to overcome this childish idea of his dad in order to grow up. However, Disney company policy requires that they will add some strong female character who is actually the true source of everything. They have to destroy this old Mufasa, because it "depicts harmful gender stereotypes". Disney traditionally had a whole lot of princesses and only few boy-centric movies/characters. They can't gender-swap the Jungle Book, because in the original 1960s movie Mogli eventually goes to the human world when he sees a beautiful girl. In a gender-swapped Jungle Book, female Mogli would have to become queen of the jungle, because obviously she needs no man. So, the takedown of Mufasa it is...

I looked up the box office and the live action was 1.6 billion, so I don't think this will flop or anything like that. I haven't seen any of the lion King movies in their entirety. It's safe to assume Disney did some demand research and are aware of where it's at and maybe who to cater to, but we'll see.

Your idea for a Scar/Mufasa fall out is probably exactly what Disney will do, and it's a BAD IDEA. The simplicity of a younger ambitious brother willing to kill family to get what he wants is brilliant. Disney's whole thing now is making prequels where heroes are actually awful and villains have sympathetic back stories. Disney adopted a "there are no villains" and "heroes are actually the evil ones" policy starting with Frozen and continues to this day. Not only do I think they actually WILL have Scar pop up, but Scar will be the sympathetic one and Mufasa will be secretly evil to recontextualize the original story. Children will learn that Mufasa is actually the illegitimate king/"colonizer" and Scar was totally justified in murdering his (what I assume will become adopted or something like it) brother.

Eh it *could* work if they did something like the conflict between Vander and Silco in 'Arcane'. There's room for flawed heroes and sympathetic villains and not everything needs to be black and white. But Dinsey don't have the will or writing ability for that, and at this point, the audience is completely burned-out.

Consider all that Disney owns: ESPN, 20th Century Studios(Apes, Alien, Predator), Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Hulu, Disney+, the theme parks, the cruises, etc And just consider how much money you give them, and how deserving they are of any of your purchases. Just consider giving Disney less money than you might have before.

And 3) Safi (spelling?) is a flawless, powerful girl boss who behaves like/is the pride leader because “feminism yay, patriarchy boo”

It represents how Hollywood is so self-centered, narcisstic, hypocritical, and everything wronged with a spoiled monarchy that ignores the public’s desires and just greenlight based on data. Write off these remakes, not the 2D animated originals that are still timeless.
