It drove me nuts for years that one of the Ashleys seems to say "Oh not! Not the radio!" When one of the students is clearly stealing a tyre, but it turns out a "radial" is actually a special kind of tyre. I'm not sure what pre-teen would have known that.

I really enjoy this episode, it exposes Miss Finsters for her limitations and provides character growth for the main characters. She mentions being able to keep going even with a broken hip in 1983 but now age is taking its toll on her, saying her days are limited. It's cool that TJ and the kids pitch in to make recess easier to manage for Miss Finster. Even though at the end with her x-ray being misread she still deserves at least a week of rest for putting with all the kids, especially the hyperactive kindergartners who never tire out.

This is the best episode of recess and here is my take on why. The episode itself is simple enough, Finster gets injured, the kids go out of control and by the end they realise morally, it isn’t right to take advantage of her. However this is one of the best episodes for so many reasons. First we have the pacing of the episode, it’s slick there’s no wasted dialogue and it feels like three-four minutes not ten.. we have set up and pay off multiple times, we have finster going around confiscating candy from the kids which will end up being the cause of her injury.. we see TJ and the guys unveil what we are believe to be is a long term plot in operation contraband candy.. we get a great funny line from finster as she’s being wheeled into the ambulance when she turns to TJ and says “get those awful thoughts out of your head” it highlights how unbelievably committed she is and it leads to a good subtle laugh, as the doors shut on the ambulance there is very little to no more humour in this episode. The first sign of Finsters weakness is shown when her crutch is stuck in the grass and King Bob ignores her without a second thought.. this tells the audience subtly that nobody has likely ever seen any weakness from this woman.. as things escalate we get our first pay off setup which comes in operation contraband candy, I especially love the safety call from gus being a mimic of “Hooty” the safety owl as proclaimed by Mikey, this perfectly fits Gus’s character and alter ego safety man so it’s very believable this fictional safety owl is something gus would mimic, the writers show very little of the ploy being carried out and make operation contraband candy seem far too easy but that’s not the final setup to the realisation, it comes in stages.. we get the first excellent use of music when the shows main theme plays just like it did in a very early episode when TJ is busted out of detention, it makes the heist seem legit, planned and leads to a big pay off but when reaching for the jar of candy, the music cuts and all the weight from the scene is dropped as gus has already made it inside and tells us all that finster is absolutely not catching them this time.. we get a fantastic scene which only lasts a few seconds, an music free shot of the gang eating candy with a solid camera angle which feels.. boring.. the heist pay off is dead.. Finster is broken as a character and even remarks to her early days in the 80’s, she defines her age, respects it and admits it’s probably time to call it a day.. she calls Randall ‘son’ and asks him to wheel her to the shade, this is setting up another payoff.. we then have the typical TJ morally steering the kids to do what’s right with a wounded lion analogy which Recess always pulls off so well.. the kids begin behaving, Finsters voice softens and we get a real moment when we realise she has made a far bigger impact on the playground than we realise.. the kids respect her and she is a fundamental part of the playground.. the show could easily end here but one thing is missing, Finster can’t lose, she has to retain the audiences understanding that she is the boss of the playground and so brilliantly the writers allow her the last laugh when it turns out her X-ray was just a mistake.. we get the music back to is mischief.. the episode ties up beautifully and Finster wins while the kids feel they have morally won but that’s down to the respect Finster has already sewn into them. Finsters last pay off for the episode is calling TJ ‘Boy’ instead of Son, this does two things, it adds some humor and pay off that things will go right back to how they were and she only reserves ‘son’ in the episode to Randall her trusted snitch.. it’s clear though with the playful back and forth she respects TJ a lot more than Randall. This episode has everything, character development, a few nice background character moments, tie ins to the recess lore ie safety man etc, excellent.. brilliant use of music with the main score leading to a zero payoff heist, Gretchen gets to slip in a witty line regarding sugar free candy.. for an episode to pull all this off and deliver a solid message in ten minutes while pacing beautifully is nothing short of masterful. Recess is one of the best kids tv shows ever made
