If you read the Tinker Bell books, there is a character called Rani who is a wingless fairy. It was stated that if sprinkled with Pixie Dust, she cannot control her flying without wings.

I guess this is why tinker's are so special, or at least for some people they are (cough cough vidia) fairies need pixie dust to do their talents but a tinker doesn't need it. From what we see when tinkerbell has no dust left she can still tinker, so if all was lost and the nature fairies couldn't do their job anymore the tinkers would. does that make sense? i think it does?

You now if you are looking to dive even deeper into the lore, there are books. I read them when I was younger but basically you here about all of Tinkerbell's adventures before Peter and the lore they provide is pretty cool. For example, in the first book "Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg", you learn there is Mother Dove, the most important creature in Neverland, who protects a magical egg which prevents those on Neverland from aging and dying. She is also the source of fairy dust I believe

I think it has to do with how fairies are so small they can only feel one emotion at a time in their source material. So they can't use the dust that way- they can't use only the dust to fly because one thing can make their mood shift suddenly over something like envy, making them unable to be happy at all times. Their wings channel the magic instead, and since wings don't have feelings, they're more like objects, allowing the fairies to fly if they use their wings to do so, but the wings alone can't support the weight of the fairies. We know water renders anyone unable to fly if they get wet, because Wendy gets splashed by the mermaids and her flight becomes very shaky when before she was quite a smooth flier. She wasn't soaked, though, so she could still fly after.

In the movies, we see fairies that appear to be different ages, The Queen, the Ministers and the keeper in secret of the wings for example, and in the legend of the Neverbeast, Fawn mentions she'll never see Gruff again.

Well In Secret of the Wings the Queen and Lord Malore, I don't know how to spell their names, met when Pixie Hollow was young, so maybe it's like a bee hive where the queen can live a long time but the workers don't. That would probably spill unto the Minsters because of how important their postilions are and Malorey since he must rule over winter in the Queen's place.

I don't know. While it's only speculation, I once read from an artist drawing book for fairies that they only live for six hundred years and don't age. It's sad, because they don't know how much time they've got left; married one day only to wake and find your partner dead because s/he is past 600 years! =/ In the movie, it never states how long Disney fairies live, other than less than a thousand years (the time when Gruff hibernates).

Maybe it’s something like this. The dust used for flying is absorbed through the body but only at a certain density (some x specks per cube inch). However if they are too dense, the upward force of the dust isn’t enough so the wings help. Humans could be less dense and therefore not need wings if given enough dust for them but since fairies are so small and dense it doesn’t work.

Alexisis Verbarow Um...no... Pixie dust helps fairies fly more than a few feet at a time, and much higher than they could by flapping their wings. They control their flying with their wings when they have pixie dust. Humans do not have wings, so they cannot control their flying as well. Also, there’s no reason for them to fly, and they’re much bigger, so it probably wears off faster.

I think it's interesting to consider the books that came out shortly before the series came out on TV, where there was a fairy named Rani who had no wings, because she sacrificed them to save pixie hollow. A few other fairies from those books came into the TV series, but that character was replaced with Silvermist. In the book, she had to use the assistance of a bird in order to get around pixie hollow on a regular basis, or walk. There was no mention of her using pixie dust to try and fly without the assistance of wings.

In the Disney Fairies books the source of pixie dust (and Neverland’s magic as a whole) come from the grinded up molted feathers of Mother Dove. The movies neglected that in favor of “oooo it’s from the magic tree” and it was always disappointing to me as in the books they went into more detail about the magic of pixie dust + even had a fairy who’s lost her wings (looooooonng before Lord Whatshisface) who even had a whole book dedicated on that struggle.

Pixie dust was created from the tree long ago, but the tree was destroyed. That’s why they use fairy dust. Fairy dust is much weaker, but it works.

Sorry for such a long post but I absolutely love the "Pirate Fairy" because Zarina explores the pixie dust and it's talent uses which Fairy Gary and the dust keepers hate the idea of messing with the pixie dust. I love how Vidia gets the tinker talents the talent she hates, that is one of my favorite scenes when she figures out she is a tinker. But when she uses the Tinker talents to help the other girls turn the ship around before it gets to the second star she sees how awesome it is. But when she first realizes she is a tinker that makes me laugh so hard. They even put Tinkerbell's signature cotton balls on Vidia's shoes which pisses her off worse then finding out she is a tinker fairy. It's cool they bring in young Captain Hook and the tick tock croc as a baby and Smee after Tic Toc croc chases him away from his original crew of this movie. It just bothers me that they introduce those 3 characters to the Tinkerbell series but have not made a movie introducing Peter Pan. In the original "Tinker Bell" because Vidia shames the "Tinker" talent Tinker bell tries each talent and fails miserably but in the "Pirate Fairy" they put that idea to use by switching their talents. In the first Tinkerbell when she trying the other talents the first one she tries is Silvermist's water talent and in Pirate Fairy that's what she ends up with. Tink ends up a water fairy, Vidia a tinker, Silvermist a fast flier, Fawn a light fairy and Iridessa a garden fairy and Rosetta an animal fairy thanks to Zarina attacking them at the waterfall over the blue pixie dust. After Zarina demonstrates the dust in front of all of the fairies at the gathering of all of the seasons including winter fairies using Tink's ice machine she made, they must have put it to use because in the "Secret of the Wings" the only way Tink can go into winter is by covering her wings and Perriwinkle and the other winter fairies have to use the ice machine Tink makes to come to the warm seasons and after they restore the seasons, the warm fairies have to have their wings frosted by the winter fairies before entering winter but in the "Neverbeast" movie they can fly through all the seasons they even go into winter to find the Neverbeast and their wings aren't frosted or covered. So I think they created modified dust to make it so the fairies can travel into winter anytime without frosted or covered wings just winter clothes unlike in the "Secret of the Wings" when Tink flies into winter to get help from Perriwinkle and the other winter fairies because of the dangerous frost covering the warm seasons she breaks her wing but in "Neverbeast" when Fawn, Tink and the fairy guard go to catch the Neverbeast in winter after Fawn thinks he attacked and injured Tink, none of them have frosted or covered wings so they must have used modified dust to be able to cross into winter without frosting their wings. What's interesting is in the first "Tinkerbell" when the boys are showing Tinker bell Pixie Hollow, all 3 fly through winter to the Tinker area with no problems, no broken wings or anything but then they make "Secret of the Wings" warm season fairies destroy their wings flying into winter but in the first Tinker bell movie Tink and the boys fly through winter no problems to the Tinker area, that confuses me.

Being a pixie I gotta say you make good stuff. Thought I'd throw my wings in the ring for this discussion. One interesting detail I've noticed is if you look closely none of the fairies are flapping their wings very hard or fast. When I fly my wings get moving to the point they hum, and buzz. And then there is the problem of their power to weight ratio. Being about 3-5 inches they are far too big to really generate enough lift not to mention their flapping pattern is bad. I'm only 1.5 inches and about 20 grams so I have no trouble getting off the ground. The square cube law can be a real drag (literally in this case)

Magic… magic… Here comes the magic of reality! Assume you have a unique substance that can negate the gravity in a given radius. Is it enough to fly? No! You still need thrust to move in any direction. Whether wings make good old-fashioned thrust using air or focus the anti-gravity waves is secondary. The point is that being weightless doesn’t automatically give you any thrust. Think about a spaceman floating in space. He may float as much as he wants, but no matter how much the spaceman waves his hands and legs (without throwing anything away or grabbing a part of the station’s structure), he won’t move a millimetre even if he’s inside the space station with air onboard. In my imagination, fairies’ wings are just wings that generate thrust by moving air. Pixie dust just makes it easier to fly by negating the gravity and probably compensating some inertia, but nothing more. What about their special abilities like raising the temperature of snow, controlling animals’ behaviour, bending light and so on? That’s a great topic for another time. I also found it odd that, like in the "Great fairy rescue" a group of fairies didn't have enough pixie dust left for themselves to fly, but it was enough for them to put on a human and use her as a vehicle. Something similar was in "the lost treasure" Tinkerbell didn't have enough to fly herself, but by sprinkling it onto cotton she could float in a tiny airship.

I always thought it related to the folklore that said fairies could only have one intense emotion at a time (which originally is how tinkerbell is portrayed in "Peter Pan")...So if they switch from happy during flight they would fall... I thought the wings were like an external organ to regulate emotion (like a fairy amygdala) specifically for flight which is why they aren't structured to hold weight or properly steer... Human brains need to focus harder to activate pixie dust bc while they can regulate human emotion to sustain flight they don't have external organs (fairy wings) that can easier absorb pixie dust... And on things that are inorganic pixie dust is interacting with the oxygen like certain kinds of glue or food activate outside of containers... They only float bc they have no organs to regulate and utilize pixie dust...So I really agree with this theory... This was a fun episode!

Okay so I have like a couple questions the first one is why is it in the first Tinkerbell that he flies through the winter room with Clank and Bobble and nobody's like freaking out over them flying through there and I thought their wings break if they got too cold. And also the next one when Tinkerbell first landed there and she was picking her Talent why would there even be a snowflake there because they're not even in the winter season they're all the warm Seasons what's the point of having a snowflake there if she was meant to be in the winter realm she would have landed over there like her sister and plus over there they had the queen and they had the fall spring and summer ministers and the winter Minister which was a girl not a guy like it is in the secret of wings. If someone can like talk about these and explain them like I really like that... also one more thing is it true that like Tinkerbell was born of Peter Pan's laugh and that's why she I don't know left Pixie Hollow because she was very attached to him? In the first film, when Bobble and Clank were showing Tinkerbell around they flew through Winter Woods with no issue. But in other films it caused them problems to even cross the season barrier for too long.

I had the same thought as what Isaac said but realize that if a fairies wings are on the verge of becoming torn as tinker bells was, tinker bell and periwinkle could be surgeons for broken wings in this sense as the broken wing of another fairy could be reconstructed using their healing ability. It’s a theory but one where I feel like it could work.

Before i watched this, my theory was that fairies wings stood in place of happy thoughts, thereby allowing them to fly even when mad. It made sense because they are born of happiness. So while the wings were a little functional on their own, they needed the pixie dust to truly fly.
