Excellent analysis. Mark Beaks is heavily influenced by modern Californian stereotypes -- in the original show, or even as late as the late 90s, he'd be interjecting "like" or "dude" into every third sentence like some unholy love-child of Scooby-Doo's Shaggy Rogers and Michaelangelo from TMNT. In reality, there are a lot of people I've met in Silicon Valley, or even here in the Bay Area, who all kind of have some Mark Beaks in them, but not all. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are obviously the foundation of this type of character, but both of them were genuine entrepreneurs who had real ideas that they brought to the world and got rich off of. Their success is legendary, but it's also legit, and there's justification for the cults of personality they grew around themselves. Beaks himself reminds me of one of those startup companies you described, the ones who have a lot of resources that they pur into some kind of "killer app". Not the kind that become indispensable, like most of the big names of social media (including KZbin itself), but an app designed to replace the current model. A 280-character IM program designed to replace Twitter, for example, or something that's "like Facebook, but cool!" I'm not saying none of these ever worked -- Tumblr did a pretty goog job killing other blog sites like Livejournal or Blogspot. However, Beaks' fundamental flaw, as you said, is that he's a sham. He probably wasn't ALWAYS one...you can't get that rich without having SOMETHING behind it...but in the case of Ta-Dah!, he's not only a fake, but *terrible* at it. The gaming channel, Extra Credits, recently did a video on the cost of making AAA video games (as in, the high-polygon, gorgeous-graphics, big name releases you see E3 gush over every year).. I don't know if there are "AAA apps" that work similarly in terms of development costs, but the cost of developing a game is only roughly 50% of the cost of game-making in general. The other half is the marketing budget. In the case of Ta-Dah!, Beaks has spent the marketing capital of a AAA game release...he's one dance number away from Super Mario Odyssey levels of advertising...but he has nothing to show for it except the money people are shelling out on pre-orders of this marvelous new product. It's a business model with a finite lifespan and the potential for catastrophic, possibly even company-ending backlash. Scrooge, or even Glomgold, would know that. But Mark Beaks does not. Hence him not being "smarter than the smarties".

Yeah -- and obviously it's not a fair assessment of the tech world -- in the tech media, I've covered far more legit companies than watched shams -- and they're usually pretty easy to see through... but DuckTales does a good job of presenting the idea in a simple form.

Mark Beaks has been compared to Rockerduck, Scrooge's other famous nemesis in the comics (mostly the European ones. Maybe because they're more used to old money than new?), a caricature of a real-life byword for wealth (they apparently were outright first going to name him Mark Duckerberg) who isn't so much an outright enemy to Scrooge as a loathed foil, who didn't earn their money square. Mark Beaks works so well because, among all the show's silliness, he's scarily plausible. Waddle is barely even an exaggeration of artificially quirky tech startups that have fancy facilities and group activities to distract employees for how badly they're treated in a cutthroat, exploitative environment. And his entire scheme is strongly reminiscent of dodgy Kickstarters and ill thought out social media web sites; relying on popularity and image to get investments in a field most people don't really understand, then using a lame excuse to run off with all the money. Say what you want about his scheme, it works, and it works because he's put effort and dedication into his image; as seen with the rooftop dive at the end, Beaks is clearly desperately in need of attention for everything he does, and he's build his company and scheme around that. It's likely that Mark Beaks is going to be a recurring character when it comes to glory-seeking in particular. Scrooge may be driven by personal satisfaction, but he certainly likes the limelight every now and then, and resents being thought of as a has-been; and while stingy, he understands the importance of respecting his employees and giving them a reason to be loyal. Beaks is also a good anti-role model to Louie, already established to be easily susceptible to bad influences, as his whole deal is succeeding with manipulation and minimal effort.

Before this episode aired, I presumed Mark Beaks would be the modern-day equivalent of John D. Rockerduck, a comics character who, depending on the writer, is either the third or second richest duck in the world (certain European comics tend to use him over Flintheart Glomgold), who inherited his money and has no qualms spending it however he pleases. The Mark Beaks we got isn't quite like that; like Rockerduck, his find spending money whenever it suits him and isn't nearly as stingy with it as Scrooge or Glomgold, but it also seems like he doesn't care that much about money at all. To him, being a billionaire just means more attention, or "buzz", directed at him, which is what he really wants. Of course, being rich has it's other advantages, such as his workers and interns catering to his every whim (which, as seen in that almost tirade, might go deeper than his outwardly carefree persona would suggest), and honestly, his scheme to get rich is actually a pretty ingenious con: hype up a new, non-existent product, have people invest in it, hire a thief to "steal" the product, keep the investments you acquired because of the "theft". Beaks even provided the thief he hired with a helicopter to escape with. It's just a shame he didn't let the thief in on the plan, or even let him know that it was Mark Beaks who hired him in the first place (speaking of which, that Falcon Graves guy is fairly polite for announcing his intentions to rob Beaks, and pretty patient with Beaks, given how obnoxious he gets). Also, in retrospect, I feel like Louie would have been a better fit for this episode instead of Dewey; the "fake it 'til you make it" thing works WAY better with Louie's whole schtick of talking his way out of things and wanting to get something for nothing, like Mark Beaks did... but then again, that would have actually endeared himself to Beaks, and Dewey immediately recognizes Beaks is bad because he's a con artist so maybe it's for the best. Edit: What I like about Waddle is that it's, in my opinion, a spot-on skewering of the tech industry, how it presents itself as being the hip, young, energetic, fun-loving alternative to the fuddy-duddy industries your dads used to work at, it's just as exploitative, overly-competitive, and greedy as any robber barons of old, best symbolized with the poster that reads "Remember... you're replaceable!"

mark beaks sounds interesting, though his hilarious persona, kinda sounds similar to how fenton crackshell in the original ducktales had problems with trust from scrooge. it would work for beaks, if he was like crackshell, where he made a really nice superhero persona, and if crackshell did meet mark beaks, i think it would play out really interesting in the same pattern as to how crackshell created gizmoduck, like maybe they could have a fenton and mark storyline where beaks finds that he too wants to help ppl, and creates a superhero persona similar to gizmoduck, but can help fenton, like maybe a sidekick,

Hold on, surely if a billion-dollar company announced their hyped project was stolen or cancelled, their stocks would fall and they would lose money?
@matti.84656 жыл бұрын
piplup229 Perhaps that would also buy him time to make something real and perhaps get more money for building up more hype.

The stocks might fall, but investments already made in the company might be allowed to be kept, with losses being covered by insurance.

Mark Beaks reminds me of those big KZbin stars who make videos only for the money, despite what they say otherwise. In fact, he heavily reminds me of the Game Theorists channel, down to the way he acts and how he responds when people criticize him.

I can’t speak for the rest of the team, but I once interviewed MatPat for Engadget and he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I don’t keep up with KZbin drama, so I’m not sure what you’re referring to specifically, but most people are more than the sum of their public appearance.
@mikeykitty12356 жыл бұрын
@@seaniccus I started watching his theories now, and it seems clear he's only doing it for the money. Some of his theories on the Five Nights at Freddy's series make no sense whatsoever. Like for example: Freddy Fazbear's is now called "Juniors" despite the fact that they were never called that. Matpat also thinks robots can somehow have human skin and organs. Not to mention Matpat likes to hate beloved video game characters like Mario and Sonic and Link. He keeps making making theories saying how horrible Mario is. And don't get me started with his theories on movies. He completely misinterprets everything.

Mcduck and Glumgold are obviously ducks. But what is Beaks? Is he a canary? A Parrot?
@Buffy8Fan6 жыл бұрын
I don't know if it'll be an actual plot or if it was just an in-joke, but the removable beard has to do with the fact that in the original comics Glumgold was actually african and pretending to be scottish to try and mimic Scrooge, showing jealousy over being #2 instead of #1. At least that is how I think it worked. I will admit that is second hand information.

Mark is a bit more of a villain in his more recent episode. He did more or less enslave Fenton and force him to "help" people with trivial matters and he couldn't help people in GENUINE peril and didn't even care a family was getting mugged. Then in the Gizmo duck suit he nearly hurt a bunch of innocent people. But honestly, Mark Beaks feels like a parody of Mark Zuckerberg and it doesn't help he is named Mark. Oh and I just looked it up and it kind of makes sense he'd be loud and kind of annoying because Mark is an African Grey parrot. Parrots tend to be loud and kind of obnoxious.

Hewy Dewey and Louie are old too. In my opinion they were at their best when they were mischievous pranksters in the original Donald Duck cartoons. It was funny to see them pull pranks on Donald I miss that. There new personalities are alright. They could make Louie pull all the pranks because he's Bart Simpson now.

This was the worst episode ever not enough action, it's a cartoon it shouldn't be all dialogue that's no fun. It needs more BAM WHAM POW. In the old show their was a pocket watch that froze time now Hewy and Dewy are getting a white colar office job 😒 laaaaaaaaaame. Also you should never separate Hewy Dewey and Louie that is like separating the Powerpuff Girls. You may be asking what would Louie be doing this whole time. This episode should have never been made.

I think that Beaks is just some kind of John D. Rockeduck reboot. Which leads me to the question...in the (european) comics Scrooges foe is usually John D. Rockeduck (or in German Klaas Klever)...while Mac Moneysack...uhm Flynthard Glomgold doesn't play a big role. But both enemies are described as the second richest duck in the world....which is confusing, because none of them seems to be humble enough to share that title...they don't seem to hate each other or do they team-up...so I also assumed they exist in two different universes. But the one comic that I would count as canonical "The life and Times of Scrooge Mc. Duck" BOTH appear. So...THATS confusing. Okay...I guess the answer is simply...its not real so some writers preferred that foe and others that foe...but if someone knows another explanation....I'am all ears.
@tcrpgfan5 жыл бұрын
It's not really all that confusing. Count the American comics as Canon, it's really that simple. Scrooge and the Nephews made their first appearances in American comics, and those same comics inspired both the original DuckTales, and the reboot from two years ago.
