As my two year old son was waking up this morning, he was lying down on the couch as I was watching the documentary about the 60th anniversary of Mary Poppins. It’s on Disney +. The show concludes with this short film. When the new verse began to be sung, I heard a little voice singing next to me. My son has never heard this song before I swear and here he is singing along to its new verse. I broke down pretty bad.

One of the highlights of my life was in 2014, a Club 33 event where I got to meet Richard Sherman. They moved 1/4 of the seats out of the Tiki Room and put in a baby grand piano. I got to see him play live. The thing that stuck with me was his genuine love of music. It wasn't about him, there was no ego involved whatsoever, the music was his passion and he loved writing it and playing it.

60 years of Mary Poppins and 60 years of It’s a Small World, just… There’s no words for me to describe because I’m overwhelmed with the death of Richard Sherman. I’ve said many times that I’ve always wanted to meet him. I know he wrote the lyric to Mother Earth, but I thought, let’s drop that and instead replace that with God, and it’ll read: “God unites us all in heart and mind. And the love we give makes us humankind. Through His vast and wondrous land, where we stand hand in hand. It’s a Small World after all.” Small World truly hits different with me after his passing, and I’m autistic and music truly communicates through the soul through the mind of how our brain develops. The Sherman Brothers gave me a kind of connection of what music should sound like, like the way John Williams, Alan Menken, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gilbert & Sullivan, Danny Elfman, all the way back to Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, among others, is why I still study the good of music and I criticize the bad music filled with druggers, celebrity this and that, and all those things today. That’s not music to me. Music truly is what I should be hearing like if it were coming out from a painting, or hearing an angelic voice from a big church. Something like Mozart’s Requiem, and especially Handel’s very famous Messiah Oratorio. The way that Richard describes It’s a Small World, that it’s a prayer for peace, and it’s never a novelty as some people puts it, truly is the side of music that explains the world… Like how Jim Cummings puts it when he talks about the way how Winnie the Pooh sees things, through honey-colored glasses. That’s music to me!
