The hand gesture the fans made up was really touching. And the headbanging in the seats! There's something about musicians and stage performers that knowingly perform for children/young adults that always make me happy. Like maybe they're going through the motions in a hot wookie suit, but they also must know that they're inspiring as well as entertaining. It must have been rewarding to think back on, as they got older, and watched kids in their own lives grow up.

The fun thing to see from this is how teenagers and fans have always been teenagers and fans, which I know is a basic statement but it really made me giddy to see it documented here. The Die Hards in the front row of every show, dancing to support the band even though the venue didn't allow it. How it was the fans who made the merchandise and gave them as gifts (and I can only imagine that was more difficult to do in the 80's.) The fans coming up with lore and backstories for the band mates, how the lead guitarist of course was a heartthrob but you still had people go crazy over the big burly dude in a fur suit. These sweet, simple, human moments that connect us through the decades

You have no idea how happy I am to see this. I was working at Disneyland when Halyx was there and probably saw 75% or more of their shows. When we ran into the band members backstage they were always so nice. Would kill for a good audio recording of Jailbait. This is the case of a band that is legitimately before its time. Today, they'd 100% be signed to someone like Napalm Records. You got bands like Alestorm, Sabaton, Gloryhammer, Powerwolf, and that's just from them. The age of niche, themed bands is well and truly upon us, and these guys were doing it before it was possible to be successful. They'd 100% be successful today.

The guitarist is the dashing space hero, the singer is a space princess who ran away from home to be a rock star, the drummer is the plucky sidekick, then you've got the brutish bass player, the alien percussionist, and the robot keyboard player with his holographic backup singers. It basically writes itself!

Just the idea alone of, as Scott Gairdner says "Star Wars Kiss", with a vocalist that sounds like Ann Wilson of Heart. In 1981 that would have been a combination of some of the biggest things in entertainment at the time. How they weren't immediately put into production and heavily promoted is beyond me. Even if they didn't want to commit to a series an animated TV special with live action performance inserts should have been a no brainer for Disney.

Just, an absolutely priceless showcase of pure 80s rock n roll, laser rock shows, dudes with long hair, fawning over Star Wars, and so on, topped with a brutal story of a band that should've made it. That cover of Hey There Boys is absolutely chilling. This really is the sorta thing Defunctland is all about- sure, Halyx might not be most important piece of Disney history, but to think I never would've known it existed if not for this. I thoroughly believe in my heart that Halyx could've succeeded and made it big. The talent was there, the passion and creativity was wild, and it had clearly created a dedicated fanbase (that persisted to this day) and the fact that new fans are coming after just discovering the CONCEPT proves that there was a winning formula. I think Halyx didn't grow because not enough marketing was put into it. Most record labels REFUSED to believe it, Disney barely brought any attention to it and wanted it gone once the summer was over because it didnt fit thier branding. This band didn't fail because of the concept, it's people or even because of bad luck. It only failed because wasn't given the support it needed to grow

Honestly, they have Star Wars land now, they could make this into a fully licensed Star Wars hair metal band and even use it to expand the lore of Star Wars, there’s already two fan bases to pull from, it would draw on the nostalgia train that’s still in full swing, there’s so much talent out there, if they wanted to bank on this, they absolutely could and it would likely succeed.

WOW! A blast from the past! I saw Halyx several times in 1981. First was by mistake coming out of Space Mountain with my brother. I was 15 and my brother was 13. We grew up as Kiss fans and when we saw Halyx, we loved them. Went back for as many shows as we could. It was honestly, my first "concert". The crowds were crazy and they had a legit fan base. I thought everyone had forgot about this band. So bummed to hear about Lora. Thank you for making the video and for bringing back some great memories.

They do great work here. I don't know why I never watched this before but having watched the American Idol at MGM Studio piece yesterday. I figured give this a whirl. Never cared for American Idol, never watched it, ect. But I was drawn into that video. Best example is his documentary on Theme Park Rides Lines. I mean who would have thought that an almost 1 hr 45 on theme park lines would be interesting. I've watched/listened to that one on more than one occasion.

This is an absolutely incredible documentary, massive props to everyone involved! I had no idea about this band before watching it so I couldn't be more thankful for sharing it with the world, couldn't hold back the tears when it was shown Lora's jacket has survived to this day, wish things could've turned out better for the band but it's good to see it'll live on in the minds of many across the globe.

I really feel for Laura. This whole saga definitely appears to have played with her head. Disappearing out of nowhere, then bailing on her husband, cutting contact with her friends then passing in Colorado years later with no-one close to her during the Disney period aware of it. Once again Disney doesn't know what to do with a great concept. And as soon as record labels get involved, you know things are going to get fucked.

I got this in the recommended today and I'm staring at the credits roll still thinking about the kids in the front row show after show, dancing in their seats, making 'H' for Halyx with their hands and proudly showing off their homemade merch to the band members. like thats the sweetest thing I've heard in a long time and now theres a small dedicated fanbase to the resurgence of Halyx and the emotional suckerpunch that everyone from the band except Lora got to see it got me down bad.

I turned this on expecting it to be a fun romp through forgotten theme park history, I ended up crying at this wonderfully touching and brilliant portrait of the entertainment that keeps these parks alive. The Podcast: The Ride reveal in the fifth act had me cheering and by the end I was in tears. They've done it again, and I'm so proud to be a backer of this brilliant project.

I had never heard of HALYX. As rock documentaries go, this one was distinctive regarding the warm feelings had by those who lived it so long ago. This documentary held my attention for the story as much as the music. Lora Mumford's jacket was the perfect imagery for what was once and is no longer, except in memories. It was only one summer, but thanks to this documentary more of us now know about that talent that was together for one summer.

38 years ago I went to Disneyland with my family at 5 years old for the first time. My objective was to see Halyx after being blown away seeing a commercial with some kind of white Chewbacca playing a guitar and to ask Snow White to marry me. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Halyx and was super disappointed I could not find Snow White anywhere that day. It ended up being bittersweet since I missed my chance but still had fun on the rides and had been to Disneyland many times since. Cut to now I think the Halyx commercial and concept was a possible dream. Even mentioned seeing a Disney commercial with a dude dressed up like a yeti and a guitar to my wife recently who thought I was nuts. This documentary shows up randomly in my feed now and is more than I could have asked for. Thank you so much for helping to achieve a 38 year mission!

Listening to "Hey there boys" I'm caught by the line: "No one cares how you struggle after the lights go out." Looking at what happened to poor Lora, it seems tragically poignant. All the more tragic that she was considered _the one_ the record companies wanted, the one with the "star potential" and she did nothing else with it. I think her heart was broken when that deal fell through. And it speaks to how powerful those emotions of heartache or heart break, depression or despair can be. As somebody who's suffered myself with depression and anxiety I was profoundly effected by what happened to her, I wish she could have seen that people loved her work or that somebody could have plucked her out of that black morass to help her try again or at the very least that we could somehow give her a hug. I'd never heard of them before, but hearing that song I can't help but think "this sounds pretty cool" and I can understand why people love them and the potential they had to "be a thing". Maybe nothing would have come of it but they did deserve their shot and at the least if the album had published it would have served as a _literal_ record of their existence. Lora's talent going to waste in particular is a real tragedy. I wish the people that could have helped her would have checked in on her more, that she had gotten more support. I get a real sense from Gary that he wishes he would have. There's no telling what if anything they could have done for her and it changes nothing that I do wish it but I wish it all the same and on that note if you know somebody who's having a rough time of things, maybe check up on them eh? Maybe you won't be able to do anything for them, and I know you're probably busy but I think we're probably all guilty of getting caught up in our own lives and forgetting people exist sometimes. Maybe that's just me searching for something good to make of a sad story. If you made it this far, thanks for putting up with me this long and reading my rant. I hope you have a good rest of your day, myself I'm sad now. But you know, I'm still glad that I watched this and that I got to learn about these people, the work they put in, what they did, what they tried to do and what they almost pulled off. I'm glad this documentary exists, because at the very least it helps to pull all of this out of obscurity.

I'm glad you wrote this - this was exactly what I said and how I felt after watching this. This one thing ruined a part of her life and so tragic she isn't around to know how much her voice was appreciated. She died most likely regretting that whole experience, feeling it was all for nothing and feeling like she missed her chance to make it big. If she'd had someone to talk to at that time, to get her through the depression, maybe she would have seen that she didn't need to run away. At least it seems she was happy back with her family till the end.

I've been following Defunctland since those early days of Kevin using the voice modulator and I am constantly so impressed by what the channel has become. I'm always rewatching the vids instead of watching new content from other channels and I can quote something from many episodes. I was crying at the Jim Henson funeral episode of DefuncTV last year and here I am crying over this Disneyland band I know nothing about. You and Matthew and the rest of this production team created a beautiful documentary! And this "Hey There Boys" cover is also perfect. Definitely something I'd keep on repeat a whole damn lot. THIS is what the documentary genre exists for! Can you imagine just how many people would have been those kids who kept coming back to the shows if it were now? How big the band would be? These guys truly created a one time magical event that absolutely cannot be recreated, and now it's been documented for all to see. I pride myself on knowing a hell of a lot about Disney history and I'd never heard of Halyx. I love their sound and the fact that Disney actually auditioned for people to create a real band that wrote their own music and not just a cover band to cover current pop songs (like they do nowadays). I'm stuck on learning that a fantastic lead singer that I would want to find the rest of her work passed after never really pursuing music much further. She was such a talent with a fantastic presence and I'm sad to see nothing else come from it.

I'm too young to have ever heard of this and yet this documentary has made me tear up and feel that wonder and excitement for something that no longer exists.
