Obi-Wan Kenobi review for episode 3 on Disney Plus of their new Star Wars Season 1 TV series. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Leia travel to a distant planet fighting stormtroopers and eventually, Vader himself Anakin Skywalker. This is the battle many were waiting for in this Disney Star Wars series, but Obi Wan's lack of training made it an unfair fight. The Inquisitors including Reva continued their storyline, for what it is.

@@TheFallinhalo The difference between religious fanatics and Star Wars fans lies only in their object of their adoration. Everything else is the same. Including the habit of making excuses to save face for their deity, and then passing it off as fact. Every Jedi survivor of this era are in fear if they get caught with a lightsaber on them. Yet they continue with their mission regardless. Obi-Wan panicking from fear makes sense for you superficially, but one must ask why is Obi-Wan written as someone who bounces around between fatal bravado and cowardly despair. One moment he doesn't want the mission, the next he's in disguise in a drug den. One moment he's in fear of Vader as he watches him kill villagers, the next he tries to be a distraction only to realise in the quarry he has no plan. Even though nothing actually stopped him from running away with Leia.
@neocomp92

It's strange that this mission seemed poorly thought out by Obi-Wan and Bail. There seems to be no plan for extraction after Obi-Wan gets Leia. No plan for check-in comms. Only by the power of serendipity did they find and escape via a smuggling network. Does Bail actually wants his daughter back?

The thing is.... narratively.... there shouldn't even be an Obi Wan show. He went into exile with the sole purpose of watching over and protecting Luke. That's it. He doesn't abandon his post for an adventure and he certainly doesn't rescue Leia or confront Vader in battle. He stays on Tatooine and does nothing really but study the force and watch Luke from afar. That's it. No show, no adventure. Just a boring, lonely life in exile waiting until the force calls upon him again in a New Hope.

There is an EU book series (4 books) that are highschool reading level that talk about Obi Wan finding out that there were some investigators snooping around Padmes death and that it could lead to the children, so he leaves to cover up the trail. With talented writers just about any premise can be mined for entertainment. Unfortunately they don’t have any talented writers and they’re hell bent on the character assassination of the only OT character they hadn’t disrespected yet. Except Vader of course, but I’m sure they’re saving the best for last. Before this is all over they’ll destroy him too.

can you stop using that as an excuse for dismissing the bad writing and flaws in the show? it's one thing to say if it was greenlit but cancelled for that reason, but it was STILL MADE. The potential was there for showing why Obi Wan Kenobi is the way he is in ANH after RoTS. was it critical to know? No, but I think alot of people were curious to see how Kenobi handled the guilt with anakin and the fallout of the jedi.

Exactly. Not enough people are bringing this up. I think it’s entirely possible to make a miniseries, likely smaller than this miniseries that has an interesting plot for what obi wan does while I’m hiding protecting Luke. I’d imagine it would concern a more fantastical side of the force where obi wan communes with Qui gon and other mystical parts of the force, all while in his cave waiting to train Luke. I just don’t think Disney is willing to hire the writers that could pull that off.

I recall at least two times when Obi-Wan dismisses blasters as "primitive," yet he has no qualms about using them in Clone Wars or in this shitty show. They don't even try to keep the stories straight. There's no coherence, no continuity, no sense of an overall story with integrated plot points. I realize that's probably difficult with such a huge franchise that includes many games, novels, comic books, and films, but they could at least make the attempt.
@JM-mh1pp
@JM-mh1pp 2 жыл бұрын
@@ElveeKaye not primitive, uncivilised. There is a difference, like with a gun and a sword. Sword takes years to master and to kill an oponnent you have to be better than him, while guns (compared to swords) require little training and can be used with great efects with basic training. Obi wan and his hatred towards blasters is direct throwback to knights hating bows.

It’s never the beginning or ending of a story that important; it’s always the journey - everything in between. • Keep in mind that in the EU, Obi-Wan was called to leave Tatooine once before in the _Kenobi_ novel. In that novel, he could commune with Qui-Gon; and Obi-Wan was given some assurances. • Luke was still safe from Vader, • Vader would never set foot on Tatooine again without awakening the parts of him that are still good, because the part of Vader’s persona that is still Anakin in merely “imprisoned,” not destroyed. • So Obi-Wan starting out virtually cut off from The Force, and his struggle to both retrieve, protect, and return Leia are a journey in itself. It’s the answer to how Obi-Wan regains most of his Force prowess along with added hope for the future, and the training he needs to ascend and become a Force Spirit when his time arrives.

Also worth mentioning is the invisible walls that are seemingly pop up whenever the plot requires it. Obi Wan has to waste time destroying the laser checkpoint, even though there's more than two feet of clearance that he and Leia could walk around on either side, especially since they ditched the transport anyway. Darth Vader and the stormtroopers are completely stopped by a low wall of flames, despite the fact that you could easily shoot over it, and there is clearly more than enough space to walk around it. You sell him too short. Obi-wan was a WAR-HERO and General, veteran of a galactic war, survived Order 66 and literally crippled Palpatine’s ultimate weapon, necessitating the need for Palpatine to allow Luke to live to be his Plan B in creating the ultimate Sith. He has conducted successful missions which included infiltration, espionage, full-frontal assaults and diplomacy - and ultimately ended the war when he defeated serial jedi-killer General Grevious in one-in-one combat. People keep forgetting that Darth Vader is a god-damn cripple, trapped in a shell that only allows him to use a mere fraction of his potential. Palpatine dubbed Anakin ‘Darth Vader’, grooming him into becoming the ultimate Sith - until Obi-wan CRIPPLED Anakin, completely foiling the ‘ultimate sith’. Darth Vader is a walking FAILURE who Palpatine kept around solely so LUKE could kill him and become the new uncrippled ultimate sith. This Obiwan ran away from THIS Darth Vader. Its nonsense.

Vader deliberately let Obi-Wan go because Obi-Wan has came out of hiding and so he is now the most wanted man in the Galaxy, Vader feels assured he wont get far, drawing out the chase, you can tell Vader want's to torture and humiliate Obi-Wan as much as possible. Notice how Vader didn't move during the sniper fire, it could also be that once Vader saw someone grab Kenobi and carry him away, he realizes there is somekind of network helping the master Jedi; so Vader could also be using this and drawing out his pursuit of Kenobi now to lead him to more Jedi. So even though Vader hates Obi-Wan he has still been tasked with hunting down all Jedi in the Galaxy.
@schwaaard

@@RaikenXion Vader isn’t a Saiyan or a sadist. He doesn’t live for the chase. He is consumed with hatred. Dark Side is nothing but impatience, impulse, revenge, animus, etc.., Someone as removed and seasoned as Palpatine can make calculated sinister plans, and Sith aren’t stupid per-se. But patience is not a virtue, and you’d be hard put to find many instances of Sith playing with their food just to humiliate it. The idea that a Sith obsessed with murdering the Jedi who betrayed (ostensibly) and maimed him would casually let him go is, quite frankly, ridiculous. There is no network or even cadre of Jedi worth letting Kenobi escape. The vast majority of masters and Jedi leaders are already dead-Kenobi is one of the last top-tier threats out there. You don’t let a premium, known target go to maybe possibly uncover a few nobodies. If you suspect there’s a network on the scrubby planet, you can easily hunt for it (particularly with someone like Reva who can find secret passages and do pretty much anything she wants without any difficulty) while still holding onto or killing the Jedi master who has fallen into your lap. This is simply a case of insipid writers needing a plot point to happen, and not possessing the care or intelligence to create a rational, plausible mechanism to make it happen. Stupidity can always be justified or retconned. There is no story that can’t be finessed into some form of cohesion. A five year old’s plot for their Lego/action figure playtime can be justified with enough effort. This series, however, like most Disney products, requires a lobotomy to appreciate.

What makes you think Vader was "held off"? Are we even watching the same series? He can easily end Obi-Wan there and then, but he doesn't care. He's like Maul, he wants Kenobi to live and suffer for as long as possible. To be on the run, to hide, to be haunted by nightmares. It's pretty obvious that to Vader the whole endeavour is more like playing with his food rather than a serious hunt. In regards to Reva, I don't really resonate with her in any way so far, but crossing out a character before they even get a chance to show what they're about is pretty weird. The episode I watched had a lone sniper not only stopping Vader from killing Obi-Wan but prevented the troopers from taking him. @@donxavier10 Right, because never before in Star Wars have we had minor/two-dimensional/disliked characters who grew over time and became fan-favourites. *cough* Darth Maul, Boba Fett, Mace Windu, Ahsoka, even Hayden Christensen's Anakin *cough* Don't be dumb. It's obvious from how her character seems disturbed by Vader's actions, from how obssessed she is with advancing through the ranks, from how she's treated as something lesser by other Inquisitors and - most of all - from how she knows Vader's true identity, that there's a deeper reveal and motivation planned for her. Seeing how the show happens around the same time as sequel to Jedi Fallen Order, and Cal Kestis/Cere have some very personal experiences with Inquisitors and their circumstances, it's possible she may even be related to the future plot of that game. But in order to come up with those ideas you'd first have to get rid of this weird prejudice towards a character we literally know almost nothing about yet. Once again, Vader ~doesn't~ want to kill Obi-Wan, he literally said so in that very scene ("Your suffering has just began"). His suit is highly fire-resistant, he can use the Force to jump over the fire, or to effortlessly pull both Obi-Wan and the droid towards him (as he did five seconds earlier), or to simply continue chasing them as he had no problem doing it since he came to the planet. Yet for some reason he doesn't even order the stormtroopers to follow them, he specifically tells the Inquisitors to stand down and do nothing. You're trying to pinpoint it as the show's weakness, while missing the most obvious answer as to why Vader did what he did being shoved right into your face. Calling out a problem doesn't make you an asshole, in fact I'll be the first one to complain if the show ends and we don't get a satisfying conclusion to those arcs. However, making premature negative judgements and refusing to even give certain characters/plot points a chance is generally a pretty inconsiderate thing to do.

@@temporaryvideos364 Is your argument really that it's alright to like a character right away but in order to dislike a character we must wait years?? Simply because, at some point possibly long down the road, some writer might do something good with them? If so then that's ridiculous! Darth Maul and Bobba Fett are not good examples as they were liked from the very beginning. Don't know a single person that likes Anakin. I don't believe that has changed. Yes, let's talk about that wildly inconsistent moment with Reva in episode 3, shall we? Because we all know where that is leading. In episode one she had no problem lopping off an innocent man's hands and attempting to kill Owen and his family - only stopped by the other Inquisitors - yet Vader snapping someone's neck makes her all squeamish?? Hahahaaaa...whatever! The Inquisitors exist to help the Empire hunt down and destroy Jedi. It's not a stretch to say she's seen loads of such acts in her time but because the show will need her to be redeem by its end now we're supposed to believe there is some good in her? So they're just aping Vader's redemption arc? *"But in order to come up with those ideas you'd have to get rid of this weird prejudice towards a character we know almost nothing about yet."* This is her introductory series and we're half way through it. If we know nothing about her yet - we actually do know a lot about her as you can see everything that has/is going to happen - then that is on the writers of this show, not its critics. What they have intentionally shown us of Reva is just a one dimensional villain. It's not a weird prejudice to dislike a character that is poorly acted and poorly written. *"Making premature negative judgements and refusing to even give certain characters/plot points a chance is generally an inconsiderate thing to do..."* Not a premature judgement at all as it is judgement based on presented data and where this series is telling you that it's going to go.

Man I'm pretty sure it's not the writers' fault. The character assassination of beloved characters is the norm these days. You'd think they'd write better plots due to the fact that they had more than a year (at least) to come up with a good story. This is damned 'divine intervention' from the higher ups. The real question is 'WHY' are the writers not allowed to create satisfying stories that most fans will enjoy. Competent protagonists + lightsaber fights covers + like 80% of the quota.

Watching this milk-toast version of Obi… I mean Ben… compelled me to look up My favorite passage from Revenge of Sith novel describing Kenobi’s style in context of personality and use of the force… There is an understated elegance in Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber technique, one that is quite unlike the feel one might get from the other great swordsbeings of the Jedi Order. He lacks entirely the flash, the pure bold élan of Anakin “Skywalker; there is nowhere in him the penumbral ferocity of a Mace Windu or a Depa Billaba nor the stylish grace of a Shaak Ti or a Dooku, and he is nothing resembling the whirlwind of destruction that Yoda can become. He is simplicity itself. That is his power. Before Obi-Wan had left Coruscant, Mace Windu had told him of facing Grievous in single combat atop a mag-lev train during the general’s daring raid to capture Palpatine. Mace had told him how the computers slaved to Grievous’s brain had apparently analyzed even Mace’s unconventionally lethal Vaapad and had been able to respond in kind after a single exchange. “He must have been trained by Count Dooku,” Mace had said, “so you can expect Makashi as well; given the number of Jedi he has fought and slain, you must expect” “that he can attack in any style, or all of them. In fact, Obi-Wan, I believe that of all living Jedi, you have the best chance to defeat him.” This pronouncement had startled Obi-Wan, and he had protested. After all, the only form in which he was truly even proficient was Soresu, which was the most common lightsaber form in the Jedi Order. Founded upon the basic deflection principles all Padawans were taught-to enable them to protect themselves from blaster bolts-Soresu was very simple, and so restrained and defense-oriented that it was very nearly downright passive. “But surely, Master Windu,” Obi-Wan had said, “you, with the power of Vaapad-or Yoda’s mastery of Ataro-” Mace Windu had almost smiled. “I created Vaapad to answer my weakness: it channels my own darkness into a weapon of the” “light. Master Yoda’s Ataro is also an answer to weakness: the limitations of reach and mobility imposed by his stature and his age. But for you? What weakness does Soresu answer?” Blinking, Obi-Wan had been forced to admit he’d never actually thought of it that way. “That is so like you, Master Kenobi,” the Korun Master had said, shaking his head. “I am called a great swordsman because I invented a lethal style; but who is greater, the creator of a killing form-or the master of the classic form?” “I’m very flattered that you would consider me a master, but really-” “Not a master. The master,” Mace had said. “Be who you are, and Grievous will never defeat you.

I don't think that Vader was redeemed, although people often say that. He killed many billions of people, and can anyone even detect a motive? In the prequels, we learn why: Palatine gave him some vague lie, which didn't even have any value or meaning to him. Plus he killed tons of other children just because someone told him to. He left his mother on Tatooine. Then, what, he blames the Sandpeople and killed them, and their children? Then he's always killing people face to face and blowing up planets. He was a sucker with zero intelligence, knowledge, reason, motive. But then he refrains from killing his own son, merely because some old corpse told him to, right after that same corpse told Luke to kill Vader. So really, he killed the Emperor only after the emperor encourage Luke to kill him. I'm not sure where any redemption enters into it. Star Wars was cool in the 80's, where at least we could imagine something made sense.

I've seen people say that the reason as to why Vader let Obi Wan be taken by that droid was because of "him wanting a challenge" or being "underwhelmed by that fight". In my opinion, Vader (who has been described by many from the show as being at his peak) wouldn't have let a little bit of fire get in the way of his goal. He's been murderously searching for Obi Wan for ten years, even if the fight was underwhelming to him, he wants to make that man suffer, as he did on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. And if we are going to get technical, Vader's suit protects him from everything, so a fire would've done absolutely nothing. But I'll probably be called a racist or something for not liking the show now!
@schwaaard
@schwaaard 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. Vader’s hatred of Kenobi would not have allowed him to be taken for any reason. Dark Side is fueled by hatred not logic, patience and reason. Yes, you can make a devious plan, but in the heat of the moment, someone who is constantly giving into impulse and hatred isn’t going to care about the level of competition. Darth Vader isn’t a Saiyan. He doesn’t live for the fight. Exterminating Jedi-particularly Kenobi-is the goal. Vader letting Kenobi escape is done for the same reason Kenobi randomly surrenders to three troopers: very incompetent writers needing their plot point to happen. And don’t worry about being called a “racist”. It now means, “someone who uses logic, reason, and historical context to discern quality and validity”. That’s the only definition that makes sense considering how it’s been used as of late. So it’s a good thing!

They do understand that Obi-Wan not training because he was sad at the destructio of the Jedi completely overlooks the strength of character he displayed during the Clone Wars series when Duchess Satine was killed in front of him, the woman he loved and would leave the Order for, if that didn't break him, nothing would.

This whole Reva thing is a psyop to keep the conversation off of ruining Darth Vader with this campy robot chicken bullshit. Episode 3 is terrible and Reva ironically enough has little to do with that. She's terrible and her character is pointless, but she's the LEAST of what makes the show bad. That scene with the fence made me super confused. At first I was wondering why they didn't just walk around it. So I assumed "Ah, it must be because they're going to use the vehicle of course". But then they ignored the vehicle and started walking on foot. So why even lower the fence in the first place?? The only reason I can think of them doing that is because of symbolism. I think Disney tried to push a "no borders" message with that very strange scene.

After this episode I feel more concerned about what this show might do, it seems that they have forcibly lowered the level of development of obi wan's character in order to be able to redevelop him by the end of the show, which could work in a character of where only the origins and not the end are known, but in this case I don't see the need to change the narrative arc of obi wan, I have always thought that the transition between the kenobi in the prequel and the one in the original trilogy seemed somehow natural and coherent, without the need to insert additional obstacles and emotional issues. Furthermore, all this introduces a great risk of hindering and upsetting the dynamics respectfully established over time and commonly considered solid canon, especially between the social relationships of the characters. From what I see, I perceive a sort of tickle of some canonical standards such as the fact that obi wan was not aware that vader was alive, which is a bit strange actually, but I don't find the need to create such a dynamic, which only risks ruining a well-established dynamic. It seems that people forget that essentially with the canonical information that is there you can create an infinity of respectful and interesting scenes, but for some strange reason they decided that in this third episode, Obi Wan confronts Vader between some near behind a town, on another planet with a desert atmosphere, then the battle is interrupted by a woman who shoots a strormtr., and literally Vader lets Kenobi go away, even if they there at a distance of a few meters from eachover... I don't know, I find it intriguingly useless, it could have made all this dynamic more awaited, maybe in a more epic and explained context or with a less static comparison between the two, because this story looks so cautiously random in his development. I don't really know, this show bothers me ... but somehow it exists and the result is a pretentious TV content, but without actually having any use for it. It probably carries more risks than benefits. Sorry for my english...

13:00 I’m not excusing how bad the show is, but when Obi Wan accidentally calls Leia by her real name in front of the stormtroopers, this happened in ‘The Great Escape’. A German said “good luck” in English to Big X, and he replied “thank you” in English. Big X was immediately arrested, and was shot the next day (his 3rd recapture meant 3 strikes and he’s out). Unfortunately this really happened. The allied escape veteran undercover expert who was fluent in German, fell for the oldest trick in the book.
