Velma has always played fast and loose with the source material but this is something else. Is Velma worth watching?

Velma Review of episode 9 where we have the first appearance of Scrappy Doo and they've made him horrific. Leading up to the grand finale, and as I've recorded it already I can tell you it's a banger! We have Velma messing around with an invincible dog while trying to destroy the lives of her parents, so that's nice. This episode of Velma just goes to prove that the creators still love to destroy the original lore while trying to push their own ideas on people as they do it. But, in the finale, I have to say it's all worth it. The one where Velma gets what she deserves. Which I think is more than we will get after the latest Rings of Power news. Making people root for a previously disliked character (one that caused me to stop watching on Saturday mornings) is a hard thing to pull off when you're TRYING to do so. Apparently the best way to make it happen is to hire these writers, and tell them how much everyone loves the character. They will then surely make that character into an unrecognizable hate-filled thing that the other characters despise -- which means that we, as the audience, will love it. Whatever the writers' intentions, the "modern audience" usually trends opposite of the intended direction. Why? Simple... we despise shit. And modern entertainment certainly qualifies as one huge, steaming pile of it.

The best way for this series to officially end. Scrappy kills velma, Velma soul gets dragged to hell by a demon, and everyone realizes. "You know, Velma was actually a really toxic person and our lives are actually a lot better now."

LONG POST! Since this season ends with Velma now a ghost, I came up with my own multiversal headcanon on how to have it end (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE 'EXORCIST: BELIEVER,' IF ANY OF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO WATCH THAT CRAPPY FILM!): An anonymous hero captures Velma's foul spirit with help from the Ghostbusters. One of them says, "Now, we can just go put her in the containment grid with the others." The hero, however, intervenes, saying, "I think I've got a better idea." Taking the trap with her inside, he then conducts a dark ritual to summon Satan (Who in this I think I'd picture being the 'Devil's Advocate'/ Al Pacino version of him), and offers him a deal, a simple trade of souls: In exchange for Satan releasing the soul of Katherine West (The nice enough, churchgoing 12- year- old girl from 'Exorcist: Believer' who gets possessed and is eventually dragged to Hell when her idiot dad gets tricked by the demon), the hero will let Satan have Velma's FAR more deserving- of- eternal- damnation soul instead. Satan agrees, a contract is signed by both of them, Katherine's soul is freed from Hell and happily ascends to Heaven, and Velma's soul is released from the trap just long enough for Satan to seize her and pull her to Hell. Two days later, however, Satan is at his wits' end. Velma's sheer obnoxiousness has driven off a dozen different tormentors (One of them is heard screaming "Put me back on Attila the Hun detail, please! He's more bearable than her!"), and nobody else will take her. Satan ultimately decides to have Velma's soul cast into the Labyrinth from 'Hellraiser,' for the Cenobites to torment to their dark hearts' content forever. Everybody wins except Velma, who doesn't deserve to win at anything.

Congratulations, Velma, you're actually managing to destroy years of conditioning: I'm about to defend Scrappy Doo. First off, obviously, Scrappy isn't a portmanteau. If you look at any of Scooby's other relatives? Dippy Doo, Daisy Doo, or... I want to say, Huckleberry Doo? Scrappy fits right in with those names. It's almost like Hanna Barbera had a plan. Scrappy was brought in at a point when the original show was losing steam, and needed a shake up. So, introduce a younger character who is almost exactly the opposite of the other costar. Whereas Scooby is afraid, Scrappy is brave. Scooby is hands off, Scrappy is ready to throw hands. Scooby is hard to understand (which is a family trait), Scrappy is coherent, but not exactly verbose. So, 'Uncle Scooby' is... a theoretically man in a mask, in a military compound...? Are you sure about that, Mindy? Opsec would require that people's faces be visible at all times so someone can't get a similar mask and be a stand in, in case someone wanted to get access to military secrets. I know it's because you wanted to do the Marvel thing and replace the 'man in a mask' with a woman, but that is a really stupid method to get there.

@@phoebea As someone nearly the same age as OP and watching all iterations that one was a favourite of mine. At first I was put off by the character designs but I soon forgot with the show's ongoing storyline and it having an ending. As a non American who also watched anime as a kid, I'd get so frustrated that US shows were never allowed to have an ending. Just kept going till they got cancelled.

I grew up with Scooby-Doo. Scrappy-Doo was injected in the show completely randomly because the studio saw the numbers dropping. It was AWFUL. It became so annoying I stopped watching Scooby-Doo and moved on. I think most people my age(and older) felt the same.

Oh Scrappy what did they do to you? We all owe the live actions an apology as they treated him with some respect and made him a better twist villain. Also I always hate how bad writers try to make villains look smart by saying HAHA this was all apart of my plan all along... like no, no villain in their right mind would let themselves get caught in the first place (Unless there is a super super good reason why). Scrappy could kill that military guy in any number of smarter ways. It's far smarter to be in control of everything than let something go wrong or having pieces of the plan that you have no control over. A military operation doesn't just hope the enemy will be somewhere else, they force them to be. If you want your villain to be smart you show glimpses of their other plan in motion throughout the story. Not random cut away to say AHA I have another plan all along.

I remember in s1, the big excuse from the show's creator, Charlie Grandy, on why Scooby wasn't in the show was that putting a dog in it would make it a kids' show. Thing is they ripped off a FAR superior short animated movie somebody made shortly after the first season was released. I HIGHLY recommend looking up the short where Scooby is revealed to be an Eldric monster that kept mauling the gang only to rebuild the world making it even more imperfect each time all the recapture the joy he had at their first adventure before Velma started to realize a talking dog was odd the first time.

Yes, that animation is WAYY better than this entire series. But I don't think they ripped it off. The reason why Velma got a season 2 in the first place is because they mostly likely had a contract with Kaling to go ahead and create 2 seasons of this show, not knowing how much of a garbage fire it was going to be. I think the reason why Kaling and friends used Scrappy as the antagonist is because Velma in this series is portrayed as a social outcast, ridiculed by everyone, including her family. That was the same response to Scrappy Doo. Everyone hated him, and he was overshadowed by Scooby. A sympathetic villain is very popular nowadays, and Kaling probably felt that Scrappy was relateable, so she decided to make her self-insert Velma, share a kinship with him. Kaling probably also wanted a "twist" instead of Scooby, it's Scrappy. Without a well-known Scooby-Doo character (without it being Scooby because meta?) to end this season, nobody would have cared.

@@jtheposs The season was heavily re-written and re-edited last minute due to the huge backlash from the first season so yes.... yes they did. Also why he appears so late because it was the episodes that had still to be fully animated. There is a guy who managed to get an interview with one of the actual animators and the animator told they had to change basically the entire season while it was already halfway done. The poor animators were really abused and desperately tried to safe the show. I feel so bad for modern western animators, they care so much they really do. And you can see it because the animated stuff looks legit amazing. But then they are let down by writers, producers and studios... honestly just allowing the animators to write themselves instead of having a separate writers room would probably yield so much better results as the animators actually care, and cares so much.

The flagrant visibility of Crappy's nipples can't be anything other than the writers saying, _"Yess!! Here's another chance to screw their heads up! We'll toss in a sneaky nod to non-binarism. It'll be one more "subtle" 'F You!' to all the fans of Scooby Don't."_ At least they did it to Crappy, the main reason I stopped watching the show as a kid. Even then I hated the character. Crappy was one more in a line of "cute" sidekicks of the era that were brought in to try to freshen the show. Cousin Oliver is another. They all failed at their intended purpose.

I really despise how in the penultimate episode, the "mystery" (in a Scooby-Doo show) isn't the paramount concern of the show runner and writers. I don't care about Fred becoming a man through his mom (wtf), the miscellaneous love subplots, and whatever is supposed to be going on with Norville. This is like if a bunch of ladies were given the prompt, "Scooby-Doo", but instead sat around a table gossiping and only faintly mentioned Scooby-Doo

The finale could be a 90 minute banger. Here’s my brief idea: Scooby-Doo shows up, gets friendly with Shaggy. Eventually Shaggy begins having weird flashbacks of a weird history (older scooby doo shows) and notices that Scooby is trying to get his collar off. Shaggy opens it to see an old picture of the gang (the actual Mystery Incorporated team) and more flashbacks. He then reveals it to Fred and Daphne who both have weird flashbacks. Not-Velma begins wondering why her friends are avoiding her. She becomes really serial killer-esque. They keep trying to avoid her. Fred sets a trap, they catch Not-Velma and remembering who they actually are, the gang unveils the Not-Velma who turns out to be Mindy Kaling. They mistakenly call her Kelly (The Office) but Daphne corrects them and says she’s actually Mindy Kaling, and Shaggy asks “who the fuck is that?” They eventually find Velma is some weird sex dungeon like place where Mindy has weird shrines of dudes she lusts over in Hollywood. Also, that dude she SA’d at a filming is also found there.

According to Steve at Steve Reviews the introduction of Scrappy to the original show actually helped it. Scooby Doo's ratings were begining to tank and the new (although annoying) character gave it a leg up. He still loathed Velma like every sane rational person would but just wanted to set the record straight about the original Scrappy.
