I liked your tutorial on this feature and both the Geoscience and 3-D interface. It gave me something to experiment with using real data and 3-d visualization. And it gave me a real sense of how QGIS works and can work for me and my customers. I really appreciated your posting the raw data files from which you created the tutorial. I found them exceptionally revealing. It is unfortunate that the data created from the Geoscience plug-in is flawed (and the resulting 3-d displays and created layers reflects this), and the Geoscience plug-in itself lacks actual documentation on the data formats and processing, rendering it only usable for me as a toy. It appears that the basic functionality is being ported to a "commercial" product still in development, but only available as beta. I still give you "thumbs up" and am looking forward to looking at your other instructional offerings!

@MiningGeologist

Hello Miguel , if you want to create a cross section using the same method i used in this tutorial , you need first to get a DEM ( raster topography not vector) , so basically what you need to do is to interpolate the the vector topo you have using TIN algorthim for example or IDW which will generate a raster version of your vector topography then do as i did in the video . i hope this helps

The problem is that the latest update of the qgis2threejs plugin has a problem with the vertical axis of the Geoscience plugin. You can solve this problem by downloading a older version from qgis2threejs manually as a zip file. The start the qgis2threejs again and it will run. But do not update the plug in, otherwise you will have the same problem again.

These tables are usually provided by the team who did the drilling , but if you have the logs you can create them yourself easily. Collar table : just put holeid, x , y , z coordinates of the hole Survey table : holeid, azimuth of the hole ( dip direction, 0 if vertical hole) , dip ( 90 if vertical hole) , maximum depth of the hole ( end of hole depth) Geology table : holeid, from depth, to depth , lithology in that interval ( the code of lithology for example SAND) PS : you need to use the same names in the in all tables in the holeid column for example don't use DH1 in collar and dh1 in survey. the max depth in the geology table should be the same you used in the survey table, there should be no missing intervals in the geology table. from 0 to 5 Lith1 from 5 to 10 lith2 => all the way to the end of hole depth. I hope this helps !

@@MiningGeologist thanks for responding! I really appreciate it. Well, eventually, it requires the sections to cross exactly on top of the boreholes, otherwise there is nothing to show, I needed to have extrapolated anything in between. Thanks for your QGIS Geoscience plugin videos, Is there a setting to set a vertical exaggeration on the sections? Most subsurface geological requires significant vertical exaggeration. Is it possible to have a multiple vertices instead of just a straight line for the section? It would be nice if Geoscience would allow for bringing in downhole geophysical data like a gamma-ray log in the standard .las format.

@MiningGeologist
@MiningGeologist 2 жыл бұрын
First of all Tim thank you for your comment and for following this channel ! You already answered your question the azimuth and dip are missing . Because collar file is for drillhole location (X,Y,Z) and the survey file (Dip and Azimuth ) will tell the software how much are they dipping ( 60° for example) and in which direction ( 120° azimuth) . so you need these to have your drillholes visualized the right way.

Hi Mining Geo, If I drag a Survey or Geology CSV file into QGIS the numbers show up as text (string). If I add the CSV file as a Delimited Text File then sometimes the numbers show up as integers or decimal numbers, but sometimes as text. I go into Fields and make sure all numbers are integers or decimals, but when I use the Geoscience plugin the drill collars plot OK but not the lines representing the drill holes nor any lithology. I get an error message saying "Warning: Some 'From' or 'To' values are not numbers". I assume this is why the drill holes are not showing up in 3D. How do I get QGIS to recognize numbers as numbers when I add a CSV file?
@MiningGeologist
@MiningGeologist 2 жыл бұрын
I think the problem is easy to solve, if I m not mistaken this is caused by the decimal separator you are using if you are using comma (,) and it is not working try using a point (.) as a decimal separator(or the opposite if you are using a point). I think this should solve your problem, let me know what happened ;)

Is it possible to generate a layer model through the drillhole interpolation?
@MiningGeologist
@MiningGeologist 2 жыл бұрын
Technically it is possible, but it is going to require some tidious manipulation also the accuracy is not going to be as you expect. There are better software that can do this but most of them are paid softwares. If you stick around and follow my channel your problem might be solved in the near future I m working on plug in that will do this automatically in Qgis.

@MiningGeologist
@MiningGeologist 2 жыл бұрын
Hello izzy, thank you for your comment , actually survey data are needed to allow the software to trace the path of the drillholes in subsurface , usually if the drillings are vertical like in your case you don't get a Survey file . but you can create one really easily, make a copy of your collar file , delete all the coordinates columns , keep only the drillhole name column now add two columns DIP ( make it all equal to 90 which means vertical drillholes , some softwares needs -90) and Azimuth column ( make it all equal to 0 ) since they are all vertical . i hope this helps .

Hello. I have a question. I managed to get almost everything I needed learning from your video. I wanted to make a drillhole planning 3d drawing, so I don't even need the lithological info. I just changed the elevation on Qgis2threejs to the value I wanted and changed the symbols to cylinders. Worked perfectly so far. I just need to know: is there a way for me to tilt these objects on Qgis2threejs somehow? Do you have any idea? Because some of the drillholes shall be done diagonally and I need to represent that. @@MiningGeologist so I have bore logs. They were done before me so they are not up to my geology standards but that's all I have to go off of right now. So I built Autocad logs, but basically I have a GPS positions (which I easily can change Into northing and easting) depth of well, depth to water (I don't believe I have an initial elevation, but probably could get that from a DEM). The lithology is all messed up (there was only a field tech on hand doing it and I the geologist wasn't hired yet) so the lithlog was basically taken every 5 feet and goes [tan silty sand, tan silty sand, brown silty sand clay, tan silty sand]. I dont really have a proper thickness of each unit just because it was so vague. So the clay could have been an inch but the sample was taken at 5 minut Intervals so no too much to go on there. These were done at 2" holes by method of split spooning. So to summarize lol I have crappy litlog that I KINDA can break into sections but can't properly class, DOW, EOH, DTW, HoleID, and well location lol

@@patrickmesa1947 I don't know if you are already familiar with the drill hole tables to perform desurveying in most of the mining packages or not. if not here is what you need : Collar table: put the hole name, x,y,z here (you can get an elevation from a DEM as you mentioned but that's not very accurate), and end of hole (I think if you sum up all the 5 feet intervals you can get one) - Survey Table: same hole ids, dip (if you have inclined holes, other than that use 90 or -90 depending on what the software accepts), azimuth (if they are dipping to a specific direction use the right one, if not use 0 ). - Lithology table: same drill hole ids, From , To intervals, and the lithology. - Assay Table: I don't think you need one in your case whenever there are similar successive intervals just make a single one, for example, sand(5ft), sand(5ft), clay(5ft) just make them sand(10ft), clay(5ft). if they did it every 5ft and you are not sure if the clay is 5ft or just 1ft that's a problem that no one can solve and I m wondering why would someone log it that way. Also in the tutorial description, you will find a link to download the same dataset I used in the tutorial this will help you understand how to format your data properly

@@MiningGeologist ya they we not geologist lol in fact I'm teaching the how to log lithology and switching them to hollow stem cores so they can be kept in boxes. The well is completely vertical and I do have access to the site to get initial elevation. The sampling was just done at 5' intervals. But I do have two done by an actual boring company that's a little more complete so I might be able to use them. But ya this was a project done 6 years ago with no since of data preservation. And they are all monitoring wells and now they want a n-s and e-w cross section with a water table contours and flow gradient lol
