I tore my distal bicep tendon moving a large step ladder at work. It started to fall to one side and I tried to arrest its fall with my left hand. Felt it go like bubble wrap being popped. I went to the ER and the on-duty doctor reckoned it was just a muscle tear, so I didn't do anything about it. But it just didn't feel right so I went and got an ultrasound after 2 and half months had passed, and that's when I learned it was a total rupture. The ortho surgeon I got said he couldn't guarantee he'd be able to re-attach it until he opened me up, but in the end he was able to. He had to dig it out from all the scar tissue so I have a longitudinal 13 inch scar running down the inside of my arm. I was in a sling for a month after the op and then did physio for 2 more months after that. I was slowly able to get full extension, which is awesome, but the muscle is tiny and weak by comparison.I also have nerve damage that gives me weird tingling on the back of my hand, but that should slowly disappear. I try to do exercises when I can, but having small kids it's tough to find the time. I'll try to be more diligent going forward. I'm not a meathead, so I'm in no rush to get to the gym to bust out reps, but I also don't want this to affect my lifestyle in the future. Anyway, just thought I'd share my story.

Same thing happened to me, trying to catch a falling ladder.. 😔 took them a month til I had the surgery. Now I’m 2 months post op. Luckily I’m getting all my motion back now, it’s just a bit stiff on extension/flexion but didn’t suffer any nerve damage etc. I still have 2 more months until I’m back to regular duty..

I had this exact surgery in July of 21.. after tearing it on June 21. The surgery went well and took me about 6 months to get back to 75% use in that arm. The scariest was the numbness running up the inside of my arm, which disappeared totally about 8 months out. Atrophy was bad and noticable. Dr. Suggested to wait for any excercise to build it back up to 1 year. I did PT from August until October 21. Keeps you moving it little by little carefully but consistently. I'd say PT is super important to getting your arm back to normal. It's a physical injury but also a mental one as most people remember the traumatic experience of heat and bubble wrap popping. From then on out mentally, you'll always go out of your way to protect it. It's been about 16 months from the repair.. it's strong and feels fine. I probably protect it a bit unconsciously, but better safe than sorry. If you're just starting this journey, you'll be fine as long as you LISTEN to your PT and surgeon. I remember reading as much online as I could as I sat there handicapped with my ROM brace for 3 months. Sooner before later, you'll be glad you did the repair, and it'll be behind you with a great scar to show everyone.

I just had this done on Halloween Day this year, 2014. The recovery is longer than expected, but the surgery was easy, out-patient. It is really amazing how little you actually use your bicep. I was benching 275 like no big deal 2 days before surgery. My surgeon tells me he has done lots of these and I can expect full recovery after about 6 months. I went almost 3 weeks with no bicep on one side and noticed only trouble curling. Other than that, I could do almost anything. At 54 yrs old that is pretty good.

Steven Hubbard How exactly did you tear your bicep ?
@mr.clippy78156 жыл бұрын

@georgewhiplemyerjr.91656 жыл бұрын
Bet, you were dehydrated and didn't notice it.
@Deerector6 жыл бұрын
Steven Hubbard when u bench, youre not using much bicep. That explains why u shouldn’t lose strength in that exercise. The reason why you had trouble curling is because biceps brachii is the prime mover in that exercise so you will def feel a difference if it’s tore. As far as other things, the body is designed with built in redundancies. We have what we call synergists. They are muscles that help other muscles carry out the job. So for instance if you tear your biceps, all your other elbow flexors are going to pick up the slack. Specifically any muscles that cross the elbow anteriorly will help flex the elbow like biceps did when it was attached. I tore mine and had this exact surgery back in 2011. I was back to work 6 months. I’m also a licensed massage therapist and I see tears and ruptures all the time. Depending on what u do for a living and how good of a patient u are, physical recovery for a torn with repaired muscle is about 3-4 months for a desk job and 6-9 for a physical job. Once you get back to a physical job you then have to gain your confidence back which took me a few months.
@illmitchjax6 жыл бұрын
Bench Press is predominately tricep extension, shoulder internal rotation and chest flexion. It's a limited movement out, there are numerous ones you use your bicep during, so no wonder.

To help secure the tendon along with the button 3. and doesn't it cause add pressure on the tendon or bone? The screw sits next to tendon and gradually dissolves over time 4. Are there higher risks of infections? No 5. Does it affect bone healing, and what happens to that plug over time? Bone healing replaces the screw

Tore mine lifting motorcycle onto a stand. Picked up bike by swingarm, lifted onto the stand but the shifter caught the edge, so I lowered it back down a few inches and tried to heave it back up higher than before - then heard and felt the tearing like bubble wrap. This was after a long day of riding my race bike in singletrack trails in the snow, freezing cold and battered from about 10 crashes. It hurt like hell, I dropped the bike on the floor. With only my left hand it took me and the girlfriend several tries to get the bike back up to standing so I could just put it on the kickstand. Long story short it took a month to get into surgery for this repair. I'm at day 18 after surgery now. There's been some extremely painful sleepless nights where I laid in bed feeling like someone was dragging a cheese grader over my elbow from the inside. The only thing that helps for me is a handful of Percocets, but they won't prescribe many of them since they're an opiate and I ran out. I can come about 30° from straightening my arm. Supination is also about 30° away from normal. I am a motocross/enduro racer when I'm not at work, hoping to get back on the bike soon. Cheers.

I am 7 weeks post surgery and the surgeon said he is confident that over time I will deadlift 665+lbs in the future like I used to. He said because the injury happens when the arm is hyper extended and a great amount of force is applied. Which is what happened to me. I got injured at work. I was pushing a pallet across the floor with a layer of cases on it with an underhand grip and it just snapped and moved up in my arm. He said the weight pulling straight down wont reinjure it, as long as you use proper form.

Pain showed up immediately but I was able to lift and curl my forearm but most painful was turning the forearm. Doctor at ER said that I didnt tear anything but so I left it untreated. After about six months my bicep as flexed looks a little elevated comparing to the other side so I went to the other doc and he said that I might have torn a one head of the bicep tendon but it was healed to the other side or some stuff like that. I can lift almost anything as now with no weight limit but my bicep doesnt look correct and also I dont feel it 100% strength comparing to the right one. this seems so archaic. Wouldn't the tendon be even more susceptible to tearing after this since the tendon will be stretched even further?
@ELBLACKO457 жыл бұрын
elitestar maybe our bodies grow it back stronger than it was before. Like when you lift weights and cause the muscle fibres to tear and your body builds them back stronger. Maybe im wrong
@stoicape43704 жыл бұрын
At first, yes. With time and therapy....it stretches out though and over even more time it gains strength back. People don't realize until they've been injured, some injuries take years to get back to 100% and many times you never get 100%. Take it from a guy with every limb in his body having had surgery! lol tendons, bones, steel plates and screws from when I got shot twice. Leg nearly cut in half, shattered hand, and now my left distal biceps tendon! Had surgery a few days ago.

Sounds like you've had a tough run my man, I'm about 16 weeks after this surgery, I'm back at the gym most of my lifts i don't feel the bicep, I'm staying away for chin ups for a long while, my bicep and fore arm still hurt if i tey to lift decent weight so I'm taking isolated bicep workouts pretty easy

Siting on my couch in pain 2 days post I’ll complete distal rupture, pain was that bad after surgery I was in tears they gave me fetanyl and the pain was still so bad, mainly from the actual bone. Worried about the recovery as I am a fit person and love the gym… I will be injecting a peptide Calle bpc 157 after week 1 for 4 weeks, very good studies on it.

I received distal bicep surgery 1.5 weeks ago. I know a button was used, but I don't know if there was a tension slide (screw?) as well. I have the common incision on the anterior side of the forearm, but I also have an arthroscopic puncture on the posterior side of the forearm. I wonder if the surgeon removed the button through the posterior puncture after the tendon was affixed with the bone screw? I guess I will find out when I see him on Monday.

@shawnpooley4 жыл бұрын
There is a physio option, I was presented with, but it meant at the very best your arm will get to 80% capacity and the pronation/supination movement in your hand will peak at 50% strength. I chose surgery and am on day 28 of recovery.

dmann343 Wait , not funny. What was the exercise that caused each bicep to rupture?
@dmann3439 жыл бұрын
The first tear was a work accident, sudden hyperextenstion at elbow setting a 30000lb bulk fuel tank with a crane. Second tear was from a roll over vehicle accident. I had grabbed the bottom of the steering wheel like a curl to keep my butt in the seat as the car rolled. While neither were exercise related, they probably would not have torn if I wasn't into bodybuilding!!!
@Mdaddarioe9 жыл бұрын
dmann343 Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry to hear that it happened to both arms. It is my fear that it will also happen to my other arm also because of wear and tear of the tendon from years of lifting weights. I am 6 weeks post surgery. Mine actually occurred performing a classic chest exercise if you can believe it. I suppose I was standing to far forward when grasping the handle for standing cable flies. My arm was also in a hyper-extended at the time. What is amazing is how quickly my arm atrophied after nearly 2 months of non-use. I'm sure size and strength will eventually return though.
@dmann3439 жыл бұрын
Yes. I am in Canada and was lucky to have had both surgeries within 24 hours of the tears. My injured arm each time shrunk 3-4 inches over 6 months. With me I totally quit the gym during healing. Kept well hydrated, slept 8 hours a night, no caffeine and very little salt. No foods high in preservatives only simple forms of protein and small portioned complete carb meals many times during the day even right before bed!! When I was resting the arm over the months I literally used it for nothing, barely even flexed it. But when I returned to the gym and started slow, the power and size quickly returned. I've heard of people not getting surgery right away and the healing and physio were longer because more of the muscle atrophies and they have to cut it off. I've seen dudes ripping it out at the gym with a cast on but I think that's probably the worst thing you could do. You don't want it to heal faster, you want it to heal proper! It'll be a stronger fix in the long run. Look at me, in the roll over the previously repaired arm was under equal force as the other side and it was fine!

holy shit, you will never lift the same again with that bicep. I feel really bad for lifters who tear their tendon. It happens so abruptly, sometimes you don't even know. Happens mostly as a result of curling through to excruciating failure. Remember, if your Bicep is failing, your tendon takes over... and then kaput. Never do this.
