Hey Rodney, great review! Would you suggest this or dug's for an all around versatile bass pedal for metal?
@RodneyMcG5 жыл бұрын
Thanks George! It depends a bit on what styles you generally do. They both share a common area, but the Harris does best everything from his tone to guys like Geezer, Dave Ellefson, Frank Bello, etc. Most traditional metal bass and would do 90% of the jobs. It can get mean distortion, but not complete insanity.The Dug is if you need that step up to guitar level distortion and really extended lows and highs. Modern metal, etc. It can also do more traditional tones, but will have more bite, cut, and aggression. I hope that helps. Thanks for checking it out!
@GeorgeVrachliotis5 жыл бұрын
@@RodneyMcG thanks for your detailed response, it was very helpful. My taste is more on traditional rock/metal bass with Harris, Butler and Geddy Lee being my main influences. So I guess this little device goes in my xmas list. I second that for the cab sim pedal, it would be a great addon

Funny you ask, I was just getting into that. I've set up a added boost before it , and a little chorus and phaser. Really surprised and pleased on that front. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for doing the only demo that uses a 5 string bass with this pedal. I was wondering how the clank and clarity of a Harris type of tone would work on a 5 string bass. Granted this demo was driving the gain hard which I love but I was wondering about 5 string clarity. So if you have any thoughts on that I would love to hear them.

The tone surprised me. Pretty authentic.

I was shocked too. I'm using a rig that's really the exact opposite of Harris being active pickups and some pretty bright roundwound strings and it took almost no knob turning to get that core sound of his. Some serious Voodoo going on in that box! Thanks for checking it out.

@@RodneyMcG Looking forward to it! When I got heavily in to music, when I was around 8, it was the early/mid 80's. There was no way he couldn't have had an affect on me as that was probably Maiden's peak in terms of popularity. Powerslave, Live After Death (which I probably watched 100 times in a row, trying to see how he played); important stuff for me as a kid. I think certain aspects of their music hasn't aged as well as other groups with a good chunk of today's kids (good luck getting them to not skip through parts of the powerhouse that is 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner'!), especially if they listen to a lot of modern radio. They were/are all great musicians though and, crucially, could pull it all off on the stage.
@RodneyMcG5 жыл бұрын
@@r.w.culbertson2030 sounds like we have the same era in common! Powerslave was my first concert and I remember it being utterly overwhelming being a little kid and the first metal show I ever saw was this massive presentation! And just like you I watched and spent several years woodshedding away on live after death and all the maiden albums from that era. I still go back to those songs once in awhile just to sharpen up my Gallup just in case I want to pop it out at some point. It's always a good bit of fun to go revisit that Bass Solo in Sea of madness off somewhere in time as well

@@RodneyMcG Haha, yup! I never picked up a pick for yeeeeears because of Steve (and I'm still 90/10 with finger playing), I had full tunnel vision during that time. Then, as you're growing up, you really scare your parents as Slayer slides in to the fold. "If you want to buy that shirt you'll have to wait until you can work, then you can buy it with your own money!" My parents were of the Fleetwood Mac, Boston and REO Speedwagon etc. cloth, so it just wasn't gonna' happen. I've not been unemployed since 1990 though, so I suppose there was some method to their madness. Bad idea to just throw fuel on the fire of a rebellious young teen! 'Spill the Blood' was possibly never played so loud that day. Anyhow, I'm off track...yeah, I go back to their stuff on occasion for some good ol' youth nostalgia. \m/

Hi Are the galloping parts more easier to do with the Steve Harris pedal ? Does the bite switch can make the Round strings sound a bit like Flats ? Thanks
@RodneyMcG2 жыл бұрын
A pedal isn't going to help your technique, so the gallop won't change. The bite switch adds attack so it's more likely to make flats sound closer to rounds.

Hi. Can i get the distortion used by Steve harris with a tube screamer pedal or similar or is necessary to have his sansamp SH pedal ? Thanks.
@RodneyMcG4 жыл бұрын
Steve Harris doesn't really use distortion, so the Tube screamer is going to be way overkill. He has a little gain to get clarity, but there isn't much drive in his tone. You can get close to it through a number of methods, but of course his signature pedal is the fastest!

Rodney McG have you tested the capability of this particular unit as a boost into an amp rig of any sort, it looks like it could really clean house and add some spice to an amp that doesn't have much inherent flavor like a carvin pro bass series or anything of that nature

I haven't done it on a neutral amp, but I've gotten good results with it in front of the dug pedal.

Rodney McG that sounds like a huge combination especially with the crazy amount of gain the dug can offer, although out of curiosity have you ever thought to try some of these units with guitar to see how they fare as preamps into a power amp and cab/impulse response the geddy especially has that upper mid response that I associate with high gain rhythm guitar
