Distrokid is such a strange company. I release music under several artist names with them, some even verified with the blue check mark. Recently, I put out an album under a new name, and then got a message from Distrokid saying I’d received a strike for botted streams-around 200 plays from a playlist that was later deleted, which I didn’t even add my music to. I asked why I’d risk my account for 200 streams when my other music averages 30-50k streams daily. They didn’t even respond, just removed the strike. *shrug*

@@uamee Got it. Thanks. Similarly, I'm quite eclectic in musical tastes and music I create, and have considered that different personas for each genre would be best for distribution. However, then the puzzle arises if you want to perform them all as a single persona. I can see for those who generate works with AI or who are just recording artists, this is of no concern, because they have no plans or desire to also perform. But for a performer, separate distribution personas could be an issue.

Did you know they won't let you downgrade your plan to one of the cheaper ones? That's right. Instead, you have to remove all your music from stores, open a new account, choose the cheap plan, and re-upload everything again. Sounds insane, right? It's their actual policy. Distrokid is trash.

@isomatic 26 күн бұрын
I have their penultimate plan and was looking to downgrade as I’m only focusing on 2 artist projects now but there was no option to. Now I know why. Either i continue to not pay them or just do at least 1 album each from 3 projects a year, which is doable and probably my best option at this point.

CD Baby not having a subscription option is absolutely a good thing. They charge a $10 one time fee for your release to stay up forever, while Distrokid will take down your releases if you cancel the subscription unless you pay an extra $49 per album or $29 per single for the "legacy" option.

I've personally never had any problems with distrokid. But one major thing that sucks about the contract is they don't have enough staff to police your music from being copied / stolen. Because if you declare the use of any sample (with rights and license inc splice etc) they make you sign a waiver which means you can't use KZbin ID. (Because they clearly don't want to get involved in those disputes where multiple people have used the same sample)

CD Baby is cheaper and probably a better option on the long run, "no suscription fees" mean you pay for a release once and it stay online (you don't have to pay each year to maintain it online). It's not a "pay a fee to upload what you want and pay each year to maintain it online" system, but a "pay only once to upload a specific release" system. So technically more expensive than an year suscription if you upload a lot, but if you die your music stay online :)

Bot problem happens with all distributors I won't lie, one of my songs that had 30k streams at the time distributed by SoundCloud for Artists got added to some botted playlist but they only botted 500 streams. Thankfully I'm fortunate enough to have a ton of genuine streams from a base of actual ppl but that would definitely get someone's song taken down if they were super small and had only like 5 monthly listeners or something just starting out. Wheel of playlists on DK is a no no tho because you're basically just guaranteed being added to a botted playlist.

Hmm. They charged my card a week or two ago despite me not using their service for around two years. I haven't checkeed the card because it was 3 bucks or something, but maybe I should rubber neck and have a look.

@@neointhematrix_8 Speaking of "they're all evil." Somebody in here recommended UnitedMasters. It was founded by Steve Stoute, a very connected industry veteran… former label president, former manager of Nas. 🤷 I don't have an opinion on UnitedMasters, but I am reminded of Curtiss King's warning, that many of the recently laid-off record label people will soon reappear to offer _slightly_ more ethical "modernized" services for indie artists. P.S. Sean Combs once 🍾 hit Stoute over a music video he didn't want released, due to graphic religious imagery. Stoute sued Puff; they eventually settled for 500K.

Physical media pays you more and gives listeners an experience that streaming can’t and doesn’t care to. Just because something is convenient doesn’t mean it’s good. It sucks actually

For what is comparatively pennies per month, Spotify has delivered me a full world of music and genre discovery that was simply not possible in the age of solely physical media distribution. I do miss that era when all in your circles listened to the same or similar CDs over and over again. In this age of streaming, I still have my faves, but I return to them increasingly less as my ear-share for them becomes increasingly less due to the abundance of new music to explore.
