Looking At Fedora 40 "KDE" (Should THIS Be The Official Fedora Flavor?)

Fedora 40 was just a released a few days ago, and this time around I decided to not look at the flagship edition of Fedora with GNOME. Instead, I'm looking at Fedora 40 KDE. The reason is because it ships with Plasma 6 and there have been talks about Fedora making KDE their official desktop.

I feel like they are already positioning KDE as the second official edition. Silverblue (GNOME) and Kinoite (KDE) are the only two immutable editions with unique names (as opposed to Sway Atomic and Budgie Atomic).

Congratulations on your move. You won't be sorry. I've been on Fedora for over 20 years since the early Redhat days, so my only advice is always wait 4 to 6 weeks after the release for the community to clean out the bugs.

Small tip regarding upgrading to Plasma 6- if you get a default login screen with a red error message instead of a custom one you chose, it is probably that your login screen is QT 5 instead of 6. Just log in and go to settings and use one of the defaults or click on get a new log in screen and sort by the newest - most of the newer ones are QT 6 and usually mention this in the description.

My personal experience on Fedora has been extremely stable. I usually wait at least a month to upgrade to the latest version. For my use case of gaming, recording, streaming and coding I actually find that being on older software / kernels tends to leave me with more problems than jumping to something newer might give me. I've updated version after version for years without needing to reinstall.

Hey DT! I know that might seem like an unusual question but I noticed that you use the sugar-dark sddm theme on Arch (Arco) and DTOS. Have you had any issues with it regadring qt-quickcontrols and qt-graphicaleffects? Usually just installing these makes the theme load (I also use a modified version of the same theme) but since the switch to Fedora 40, I've been having issues where it says that the module "Graphicaleffects" is not installed, where the Fedora package for it, qt5-qtgraphicaleffects, has been installed. I even did a reboot (which should not be necessary) and still get the error message. I just wanted to see if its caused by the version bump of this package in Fedora 40 (an update that happened on Arch in mid-March) or something else, Cheers

I've been using Fedora with Gnome desktop for the last 3 years. Smooth as butter and not a single issue when upgrading to the next release. Personally KDE not my favourite, but it works for others.

Same here. Fedora Workstation was my choice when moving from the Microsoft ecosystem to the open-source ecosystem. Out of the box, GNOME really brings out the uniqueness of Linux when compared to something like Windows or macOS.

Been using Fedora 40 Gnome edition and have found 3 big bugs that I am dealing with. Not a show stopper but somewhat concerning how they were missed is beyond me. Hopefully, they get resolved after some updates. This has always been the issue with running Linux in a desktop envrionment are the bugs they have. The kernel is pretty much flawless.

I love Plasma 6, but there is one issue that bothers me. When I add a new App Icon to the panel everything is fine, but when I reboot, the added icon isn't in the panel anymore. I'm on EndeavourOS but maybe it is different on Fedora.

I have this installed and I can open more tabs then I can in MX Linux XFCE. It seems that KDE is getting better and better. I know I liked it the best in the KDE 3 days but this is pretty good and runs well.

I'm looking for a Distro that supports multiple external monitors out of the box on a laptop. Before I had external monitors, I think started with Ubuntu then Mint back to Ubuntu and now back to Mint and I like it again but no support for extra monitors using a dock. Windows supports multiple monitors and I can turn off the laptop monitor plus it supports the full function of my Logitech MX keyboard and mouse series. Some say Fedora KDE would support multiple displays, I should say instead of monitors but will it or Kubuntu?

I bit my teeth on Fedora starting with Redhat 2 and Fedora 3 when the install was 3 or 4 CD's. I've tried many other distros since then, sometimes have several machines just to explore and play around, but I always come back to my one true love, Fedora. Currently upgrading my machine with an SSD and running Fedora SilverBlue, but planning a more powerful machine this fall to run Qubes, which is built on Fedora. This is going to be exciting.

We're on Plasma 6 now on Tuxedo OS. The installer was pretty easy to use for the update, but the bottom panel feels a little buggy on boot. It resizes from large to small. BTW my panel was set to behave the same way in Plasma 5.27. Alt-Tab to switch the open programs has improved and also the overview is greatly improved. I honestly wouldn't have minded waiting a few more months to move over to KDE 6. A slight delay in updates isn't the worst thing. We're still on the old Ubuntu LTS. I'm sure there'll be a load of headaches with Ubuntu LTS this summer.

I installed the official fedora 40 with gnome. Then I used dnf to install plasma as a secondary desktop. It majorly messed up my gnome theme. I tried to delete a couple of hidden files in the home directory for the gtk theme, but that didn’t fix it either. I had to completely re-install.

I tried fedora 40 KDE on my laptop with Nvidia, and the suspend-resume was broken completely. This has been the case with kde since forever now. Gnome works flawless though

Fedora update had ~600 updates, meanwhile Ubuntu has had 0 updates in last 8 days, but the LTS release was totally broken compared to 23.10. so much negative feedback for Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Kubuntu has been my favourite distro for a long time. But for now i will stay on CachyOS.

It still doesn't come with codecs installed by default but a single command in the terminal solves that or else you can use the flatpak version of firefox which includes the codecs for online streaming.

Can you do a Solus review? Now Solus is on v4.5 with a new Solus XFCE Beta option which works really well after installing all updates and restarting 👍 Solus also has a KDE Plasma option. I'm still on Solus Mate, hope they keep it going since Mate desktop v1.28 was updated in Solus, just that Mate desktop v1.28 hasn't been announced officially. Solus is very fast and stable with a new round of updates every Friday usually, every 1-2 weeks ✅ Solus is already running Linux kernel v6.8. Sad that plasma 6 runs really poorly with nvidia and it doesnt matter if its wayland or Xorg. For some reason I had up to 70% cpu usage when moving a window and the whole thing felt laggy. According to htop caused by plasma-workspace-x11 and kwin. Gnome doesnt have this issue though. Wayland is just a mess with nvidia blobs.

Honestly I like KDE. However, I feel it is more glitchy such as blips in the code versus GNOME. It is just not as smooth as I want it to be yet. Some diehard KDE users may disagree but I think they're in denial. ;) BTW I'm not that big of a fan of GNOME either.

It's not really true that Ubuntu has super tested software and is consequently more stable. Today this is no longer the case and Kubuntu users know it well that they find bugs that have long been fixed upstream, but that the fixes will never arrive on Kubuntu. The stability of old software is just an urban legend, perhaps true years ago, but not today.

The installer is terrible. The OS is fantastic. Luckily don't need to use the installer very often, but it is a huge hurdle for new users and might even turn many away from Fedora. They really need to get rid of this installer.

When are they gonna make themes which are not flat? Flat surfaces and objects are causing ice strain especially for people who have poor vision. Second most people don’t even know where to click anymore. Before things used to be realistic like buttons, you know he had to press or I could press. Everything needs to be pretty aka destructive

watching through this video reminds me of why the average user will never switch to linux on their PC. The reviewer wasn't able to find/install an app from the GUI, and switched to the command line as an alternative.... Here is my experience: KDE breaks a lot but is a much better approach to what a DE should be like, Gnome is more solid but it is a horrible DE experience unless you are on a laptop. And both of these break with Nvidia+wayland. I am forever stuck on mint+cinnamon. Until Clem also moves to wayland. In which case I can't use my pc with any modern linux distro until I change my GPU in the future.

I disagree. I love the Anaconda installer and dislike the ones for Linux Mint and Ubuntu. The anaconda installer is also a billion times more intelligent. It figures out boot stuff perfectly, you can make any partition encrypted and so on.

Fedora Is cursed for me. I3 Is the only spin that lets me boot and gives normal resolution in VM. Otherwise I need to boot with weaker graphics options in Grub and get stuck in lower screen resolution. It's probably Wayland since i3 still uses xorg.

Yeah, I noticed GRUB refreshes the screen kind of slowly, but only on Fedora. On Arch and Ubuntu, it works just fine. And yes, on my all AMD laptop, that's the case. On my Nvidia desktop, GRUB does refresh a bit slowly under Arch, but I am using two 4k screens, so that could be it, and it does work once I boot into the system.

Couldn't in stall corupt iso finally when I got good iso I failed post boot 6 critically errors don't know what they mean but failed to run live iso no thanks

workstation edition should remain flagship of fedora.
