Openbox has always been my favorite floating window manager. It holds a special place in my heart due it being the first window manager that I used when I switched to Linux. And I still find it so darn comfy to use!

I have a soft spot for openbox. I first used it on the old Crunchbang distro that I ran on my old Acer Aspire netbook from 2011-2014. I was new to Linux and it was the first distro that I really tinkered with to make it the way I wanted it.

I start my Openbox experience with Crunchbang ++ and then tweak from there. The (pipe) menus, tint2, dmenu, tiling and GUI confs are almost all already in place and the distro comes completely unbloated. Add lx-hotkey from synaptic and you're good to go ;-)

Hey DT, Thanks to your (old) videos I started to put together an OpenBox based custom "DE" on my machine. I don't like the tiling window managers so OpenBox is a good compromise for using all the other cool stuff you are using but not using a tiling window manager. I was using KDE at the same time and playing around with OpenBox on the side. But few days ago my Debian SID got an update which removed my entire KDE install because I wasn't paying attention when updating🤣But I stayed on OpenBox with my tint2 panel and installed lots of other stuff you usually talk about, like rofi etc. Would love to see you make some new OpenBox videos

Is there a reason you don't use xfwm with OpenBox? I am considering leaving XFCE because it is bloated and removing some of the bloat (such as xfburn) can break your desktop. I wonder how much lighter the above combo would be and what things I'd miss out on. I have 1TB on a slowly-dying hdd and wanna use it up before it dies, so I need something super light.

@@genkiferal7178 i use openbox with a tint2 panel. There is also a bunch of other software but i try to keep everything i use standalone that do not depend on other desktop environments components to run. Like pcmanfm instead of nautilus since nautilus requires a lot of gnome components where pcmanfm does not. My entire system if i do it from scratch and want to stay minimal is very small... Not sure exact numbers but if i install it with lets say a minimal Debian install then id say less then 5GB space. Also using a window manager like openbox is very low impact on memory. My current system right now at idle is running 200 to 300MB of ram. And i do have a good amount of services running.

But, do i install Debian server or will the regular Debian give me options other than the normal 4 D.E. it offers? I always chose Xfce, so never paid attention.

@DistroTube

Because too many people use /bin/sh as the shebang in their scripts, which points to the default shell on your system. Moral of the story is that people need to start using /bin/bash as their shebang to help out us fish users.

@@russellrussell5495 i am thinking that now, too. When you remove something, you always risk breaking your system and sometimes don't find out for a week - too late to know what broke it. making lots of notes and only removing things once every few days helps, but that is tedious.

@benjy288

I tried labwc recently, but it lacks smart window placement, so if you open a terminal it will place it in the middle of the screen, and if you then open a file manager it will place it directly on top of the terminal, which sucks, and there doesn't appear to be any way to change that, I even tried copying my openbox config file to the labwc config file but it didn't change anything except for the window decorations, it seems a shame that most new window managers lack smart window placement.

Hi DT! You make great content about Linux. I'm considering to make the switch to a Linux Phone in December 2021. The reason? I'm having the "perfect" android phone for my usecase and I want to try something different. And no- I'm NOT switching to Apple. As you are using Arch every day, there is a huge possibility that you might have already thought about a linux phone yourself. Could you give your opinion about this idea, because I'm really not sure how to transfer existing data to linux for example my Android Calendar (the things I saved on it) and other things like often used apps (for example Whatsapp, Amazon(Primevideo), GoogleMaps, the app of my phone provider (how many minutes or data is left on my contract), and some more). Do they also work under Linux phones and if not - is there somepossibility to create a virtualization layer for running these apps on the linux phone? If I got to choose the device, it probably might be the Pro1X from f(x)Tech, or some other similar device, capable of running linux natively. Thank you very much for taking your time to read this comment.

Openbox is ok but my favorite is Fluxbox... You've never really given it much of a chance... All config files just plane text files. MenuMaker works great to start the menu, tint2 is great nitorgen for desktop image and of course many of the the others you mentioned for OB... But the deal maker for me is the window TABBING in Fluxbox. Please.. please give it a REAL try... Use it for 2 or months and I wouldn't be surprised if you changed your mind about how you feel about OB. I used it as my daily driver for over 2 years. Even built a Karaoke machine with Fluxbox as the user interface that any level user could log into and start using it out of the box as they say.

I like minimal-Fluxbox, but hate its panel. I have XFCE and its panel shows me how many file manager or notepad windows I have open. That has proved very useful. I cannot seem to the workspaces or two sets of arrow on left or right off of Fluxbox's panel. i use keys for those instead. Also, I haven't been able to make fluxbox's panel so that my opened windows always open above it - instead of over it. Rox-panel has a function that allows me to easily makes keyboard shortcuts, but then i have two panels (Rox's and Fluxbox's). So, I have to move icons to Rox-panel, make keyboard shortcuts, then remove Rox panel. if I add a new program and want a keyboard shortcut, again I must temporarily add Rox-panel. I only have Fluxbox on a live usb and am testing it to see if i can replace my too-bloated XFCE.

I just discovered that the bog-standard install of MX-XFCE is less ram intensive at boot up than my minimal install of Openbox!!! XFCE: 460 M; 92 tasks, 121 threads, 1 running; Load av. 0.38 0.27 0.15 OB: 488 M, 66 tasks, 137 threads, 1 running; Load av. 0.44 0.60 0.26 Thoughts? Is that a possible issue with OB being 'feature complete' whilst XFCE/Xfwm can continue to make things lighter and more efficient?
