As comment from M&C, I am also 73. Simon & Garfunkel were so influential in the 1960's in awakening the public to stand up and protest the Vietnam War. Many young men from my graduating class went off to war and never came back. It was a heart-wrenching decade. Simon & Garfunkel's version of this song was soft and respectful of the importance and meaning within the song. I didn't think anyone could top their original rendition of the genius lyrics. David Draiman's rendition brings out all the anger and rage that was felt by the younger generation over that horrible war. All the young men who died and never got to fulfil their life's dreams is what brings back the rage and the tears while listening to David Draiman's beautiful voice. It's absolutely beautiful in its perfection.

I grew up in this era, and actually have the original Gospel album this song first came out on. The album tanked, but Sounds of Silence was the song that catapulted Simon & Garfunkel from the Gospel/Folk genre into the Pop/Rock genre. It hit the top of the pop charts in 1966, Then The Graduate came out a year later with their songs as the sound track and really propelled their career. They were not thought of as the anti-war group back then. Not as much as Dylan (Blowing in the Wind, etc) and others. Maybe because their gospel songs other than Sound of Silence ever got any publicity. The original version of this song was simply a warning. A VERY BIBLICAL warning. If you don't understand the biblical roots, you won't really understand the song, which has nothing to do with anti-war sentiment. For example: "Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you," "But my words, like silent raindrops fell ... into the wells of silence" WHO IS SAYING THIS? *"Jerusalem, O Jerusalem...How often I have longed to gather you under my wings as a mother hen gathers her chicks, but you would not."* And *Jesus* wept. A large part of Simon & Garfunkel's genius was in stating timeless, Biblical truths in modern language, in a modern setting. Instead of Jerusalem. it's New York City. Yet the message and the warning is just as timeless and pertinent today as it was then. Thousands of people worshipping false "neon" gods. Modern day BABYLON. All going their own way aimlessly, neither listening nor communicating with each other. Love grows cold. Life becomes coarse. David's rendition is stunning. When the sheep lose the Shepard, the flock disintegrates, all going their own way alone, losing the coherence of family and unable to communicate effectively anymore. If you don't understand the Biblical roots of this song, you will not even come close to the full meaning and portent of the song. And we should remember why Jesus wept. Jesus knew what the consequences of rejecting God would be for Jerusalem, and they were devastating. They still are. God help us.

I will be 73 this year and have been a staunch fan of this song and what it is desperately trying to say to the whole world, "WAKE UP AND SEE WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU! YOUR WORLD IS CRUMBLING INTO DECAY--IT'S TIME TO FIX IT--THE SIGNS ARE ALL AROUND YOU!" But when I heard your version, it pulled me right inside the song itself! Your build up to the explosion had me crying and screaming out the song in such a way that I almost explode with the urgency of getting the message to the whole world and thinking to myself "Have I done anything to help fix this world to wake it up to it's destruction--I am nobody--have I done any tiny thing myself to help or am I also part of the problem as well! Though no one will come to my funeral--your song will be one of 3 that will be played over me! You are a great gift from my father in heaven! Keep it that way!--Love--Diana

This song introduced me to the power of Disturbed. When the song was written, in 1964 , I was still in High School. While in High School.....during biology class, the office PA system interrupted to tell us that president John F. Kennedy had just been shot ...in Dallas. I Walked home that day .......................and life has never, ever been the same since . That was the end of innocence for me. Somehow, this version by Disturbed encapsulates ALL of that and the decades since. The hope of that first, innocent version.... and the reality of what we have become since then... This is the most Powerful thing I have listened to in all my 76+ years. Thank You .... especially to Danny !

I’m a 57 year old US Army Veteran, always loved the original, my interpretation is it’s about Humanity’s separation from Humanity, but still a beautiful song. I’m a fan of Disturbed myself, had a “meet and greet” with the band in San Jose California on the Prayer tour, and ran across the Disturbed cover on KZbin….. it brought me to tears, the way they delivered the song and lyrics, was powerful and moved me through a range of emotions, the message delivered masterfully. I read somewhere that Paul Simon himself said “We (Simon and Garfunkel) were the pleading warning of what was happening, Disturbed’s cover is the rage that the warning went unheeded”. Don’t know if he actually said that, or something close to it, but I agree with the statement because the difference between the original and cover sounds just like that description to me.

The thing that I love about Disturbed's cover is that it actually captures the angst and depression encapsulated in S&G's original lyrics. At its core, The Sound of Silence is about people simply not paying attention to each other. We hear, but we don't, you know? We're all just waiting for *our* turn to talk ... so no one will hear us. Screaming at the top of your lungs to be recognized, and it all falls on deaf ears. And while the lyrics that Paul Simon provide are perfect for that generation, Disturbed captures the actual *mood*--dark, depressing, haunting ... depressing, and ANGRY! I've listened to thousands of covers. This ranks in my top 3 of all time.
@audreym3404
@audreym3404 5 жыл бұрын
Agree! The original song is perfect in its own way, the softness and harmony really brings out the melancholy aspect of the song. Disturbed covers more of the raw angst and depression more directly. Both the original and the cover highlights the haunting cries of the song and message really well. Disturbed's version is definitely different, but in keep of the spirit of the song. It just proves how powerful and timeless of a song it is! I really like both of them equally. Depending on the mood, I might choose to listen to one over the other. But equally excellent and touching. It's an ode to the power of music and lyrics. The original will always stay stronger as S&G actually wrote it, I mean those lyrics can simply stay as poetry. The melody enhances and reverberates the beauty and truth of the lyrics. But a huge kudos to bringing as equally stunning take on the song! It is appropriately haunting and powerful, unlike many other cheery covers. There were great vocals but they just don't seem to embody/encapsulate the spirit of the song as much as this one does. As a band, instrumental & vocal composition wise, they did fantastic job! Happy to see more people being introduced to S&G as well as to metal music. Both genres/bands offer such intangible richness to the soul.

He’s preserving his voice as he speaks. And you bet. He comes from a long line of cantors and trained through high school until he turfed orthodoxy for metal. This version is so incredibly complex in terms of how he can feel the melancholy and anger and isolation along with how he modulates his breath, his pitch, how he moves from chest to head voice, from smooth to raspy and back without getting pitchy and so much more shows how someone with profound respect for the genius of a 21 year old song writer, wise beyond his years, and lent perhaps Simon might have wished to express for our modern times, making it a masterpiece. Simon’s original version was just the he and Garfunkel singing without a 60’s sort of band arrangement. It wasn’t as up tempo as the one they finally made famous. The producers found it to be too moody, so Simon tossed it aside. His manager talked them into re-recording it. But when you just read the lyrics, you really feel what he was saying. The message hasn’t changed even now. It’s just that we now have more folks around who can cover it in ways that are meaningful to them without losing the sense of isolation, melancholy, and the social statement. David’s version, I think, speaks to listeners now in a way that would never have been accepted in the 60’s folk scene. Both are virtuoso versions in their own individual rights. Such respect!

Being an old school going back to Greenwich Village where I heard Simon and Garfunkel in smokey joints in the early part of the 60's, I thought Distrurbed would be sacrilege but after hearing David Dralman put his amazing passion with anger and pain leading to the end in solace softly leaving the listeners breathless. Deep inside of David's own persona, resides a gentler and finer soul that is able to convey gentleness from within. Despite a macho angry projection, inside he's a loving gentle soul that longs for filling the emptiness that has been part of his success and awareness of what his diehard audience expects from him. Great rendition of one of the most beautiful and philosophical song by the genius of Paul and Art! Thank you David for a great performance!

This cover of "The Sound of Silence" was my introduction to Disturbed. Growing up, I'd always been told not to listen to Disturbed, their music isn't any good, blah blah blah. One day, I wanted to listen to the Simon and Garfunkel version, so I asked my smart speaker 'OK Google, play The Sound of Silence' and it replied 'OK, playing The Sound of Silence by Disturbed.' My first reaction was to turn it off and ask for the S&G one, but I was curious and let it play. Oh boy was I glad I did! This opened the door to the rest of their music for me, let me in gently but with a good representation of what to expect. Now, I've even gotten my parents to appreciate some of the musicality and lyrics from some other Disturbed songs :)

I'd never heard of Disturbed. At first, I thought "Oh, another over vocalized 'tribute'". Then, I took that chance and listened. Goose bumps. A few tears. And a great appreciation of David's vocal chops. #YouHadMeAtHello

here in the Netherlands, they would never play any of the Disturbed music, ever. but while i was at work and out of nowhere.. The sound of Silence covered by Disturbed was being played on the radio. i was shocked and so so happy, i just sang with it and didn't care who heard me because i love it so so much!

It was definitely done too fast, and the background music and general atmosphere was way too perky for such deeply profound lyrics and thoughts. It just fits much better on this version.

Any band or performer who can take a risk and learn and extend their craft gets kudos from me. Breaking into new worlds is a risk....and one that everyone should take during their lifetime. This was a brilliant diversion from their "norm". What Simon and Garfunkel made into a warning, Disturbed made into a battle cry. I cried the first time I heard it.

Once I heard the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence, I came to view the original as a person having a revelation, and starting to tell people, with Disturbed's version being a more practiced, more confrontational presentation, tinged with years of frustration and anger at the warning of the message being ignored.

This cover of the song is breathtaking and David Draiman added more emotional nuance and outrage to the lyrics. The original version of "The Sound of Silence" clued me in early in life to avoid the "neon gods" of commerce and idolatry and to never be silent in the face of corruption and injustice. Whether that was ever the true meaning implied by the lyrics, that's what I inferred.

What a brilliant vocalist & moving performance. You've touched the deepest emotions of many listeners and yes, I got goosebumps & I cried. I'm in my 80's & have only cried during live performances of classical music & now, every time I listen to your wonderful performance. P.S. when Simon and Garfunkel person first performed the song it was a protest song, hoping for change and when you sing it it's like a desperate call for humans to get it right. Thank you Disturbance💗

That is so sad. Pain comes and goes. Taking your own life is like dumping a brown bag of dung on the doorstep of those who love you and then lighting it on fire- then ringing the doorbell. Only the fire never goes out for them. Why do I know? My brother in law killed himself. Sorry folks- I see it as a cheap and cowardly way out. Everyone feels pain. Stick with it- work through it. Breathe. Focus on one breath at a time. Pain is like a wave in the ocean. It flows in. It flows out. Leave it be.

And, several years later...I also had never heard of Disturbed until a KZbin algorithm put a live recording in my feed. And now, I've purchased 3 Disturbed Albums because of the depth of their lyrics, the emotion of the music, and the fact that several of their songs moved me to sobbing tears. I have found an appreciation for music that I would have otherwise NEVER listened to, (typically into classical/smooth Jazz/Lo-Fi beats and some pop).

I've always been quick to judge these "heavy metal" groups, thinking they didn't sing about anything besides satan or something along those lines. I've come to realize that they are truly artists, just like any other groups in more mainstream genres. Especially this guy, he's such an artist and has a craft to him. I'm glad to have opened up to explore this type of music even more

I'm 61 & used to think that too because the "experts" made such claims. Learned many years ago to stop listening to the so called experts and to judge for myself bands for myself. I've heard some truly amazing musicians and singers. If I never gave all types of Metal bands a chance, I would have missed out on great bands like Disturbed and Korn. I set limits. There is some really dark music out there & I stay away from that. I've even listened to some of Marilyn Manson's music. Some of these guys are very intelligent & have lots to say. We may not always like what we hear because sometimes, the song is like a mirror & we may not always like the reflection we see.

Yeah, its why i still steer clear of most "death metal" and "black metal" groups mostly because of this stereotype. However, i am a big fan of heavy metal/power metal/etc. There are some very talented and skilled artists that really put a passion into their music, beyond just trying to sell an album or become popular. Disturbed is a band that isn't there for just the music, but really sheds light on societal issues and makes people feel empowered. Another great band is Sabaton. This band makes songs about battles,wars, heroes of war, and struggles fought throughout history that actually happened. Some songs are very sad even for a metal song such as "The Price of A Mile" . Its a song about the battle of Passchendaele which cost over 500,000 lives.
