that's one hundred percent right down the middle. When I listen to this song I get so sad and emotional that it hurts so bad and I just wan't to run away but at the same time it's comforting to be able to feel the tears running down my chin. Praise David Draiman for this version, in the end it's really healing to be able to feel so much.

If the version by Disturbed doesn't stir emotions in you, you're not human. You have nothing to apologize for. The crazy thing is that I can't speak as well as that Man can sing. He's a true Master of his craft.

The first time I heard Disturbed sing this I cried but I went straight back and listened again and just carried on crying. My take first was it was the lyrics that were making me cry; Needless to say, the second time I listened I realised it was the delivery of this song and the emotions that were evoked that were the real clincher. Disturbed and their rendition of this classic made me realise I truly hadn't listened to the lyrics ever

I am 60 and I have known Simon and Garfunkel's version forever and always thought it a beautiful song. But, when Disturbed sang the song, it was a completely different feeling and it was so beautiful I think even Paul Simon would feel great emotion when listening to Disturbed's version. So beautiful. Sistah - I hear you regarding the oppression of silence. That when my negative self-talk begins, in the time between turning the TV off and hauling myself into bed and turning off the light any time between 1 - 1.45am. It takes this old body longer to get ready for bed, and by that time I'll have beaten myself up enough to be tired enough to sleep. It's one reason why I keep my TV on through the day. It blocks out Him, the self-critical part of me that keeps dragging me down to his level.

David Draiman of Disturbed's version - being slower & more passionate draws you in. Forcing you to LISTEN to his words. Words that S&G told us but went ignored for generations. David now yelling at us for not listening to the warning. Again thank you and bless you

I was so waiting for this reaction here. I can take the song and view it in many meaning. From what some say is like a representation of the world today and technology (even though when this song was made the technology was not around really) to dreamers thinking and making such beautiful designs and with the hopes of riches and fame but never being able to share them. But the music video of Disturbed version I think adds another layer that you can think of. Imagine all the beautiful songs that were written in peoples minds just to be lost and never heard. I can always listen to Disturbed version over and over again and can see it in a different view.

This song was written more than 55 years ago, but it has not been more important than it is today, with the silence of the masses, like a cancer grow, in favour of hate, rasism, fasism, greed and rightwing and religious violence, and eviromental issues. Becourse just like in the 1930`s europe, it is the silence of the masses that let the oppression , the hate and the fear grow. it is that this song means to me, a wakeup call to fight all oppression to save humanity and to save this planet for future generations. ps: I have difficulties to sleep when it is quiet too. it is a symptom of PTSD, for you the childhood and the abuse created your PTSD for me it was feeling diffrent of undiagnosed Autism/ Aspergers syndrome/Tourettes, didnt get my AS/TS diagnosis untill i was a grown up man in 2007.Ds

After 55 years of listening to the original, this version by Disturbed is what hits home the most. I was 14 when the original came out and really did not understand the power of what Paul Simon was saying. As the years pasted, the words meant more and more. But this version is so powerful and hits so hard at how we have abandoned what is good. "People talking with speaking, People hearing without listening. Wow prophetic words from so long ago. I've seen grown men break down in tears when they hear this ... including me. If you've ever had a sad or emotional experience in life, David brings it out. A truly holy voice. Oh Sweetie. Think of this as cathartic. This is the first time I’ve seen your vs reactions. The song was composed by a 21 year old very young man in the early 60’s during times when youth were hard pressed to get their parents and elders, many of whom were born in the 30’s and 40’s and who after WWII shut everything out, went to work, had “traditional families” and didn’t listen to their young folk who were getting deeply involved in the civil rights movement, when colleges were organizing anti-war movements, and who felt, as young people in their 20’s, that the older generations didn’t connect to the injustices they saw. Then JFK, MLK, RFK and so many others who were the hope of a new generation were killed. Many lost hope. It’s a song of hopelessness and loneliness and brilliant. Simon and Garfunkle originally recorded it with just two acoustic guitars. Their manager and producer jazzed it up with a pop folk arrangement which took away the meaning Simon intended it to have. But back then, we weren’t allowed to sing with the kind of passion and plaintive cry which David Draiman sings this with. Disturbed has been around as an unusual metal band since the mid 90’s and all the more exceptional because the musicianship and training of these men was first rate. They always had a melody to their cuts because they could play and sing, and could translate something our brains could relate to into their really hard stuff. The band members suffered with various hellish situations in their own lives, and remarkably, about 10 years ago, they started talking about doing more lyrical compositions and covers. They covered several well known rock songs from groups like Tears for Fears and Sting, but they never knew that what THEY truly loved and wanted would work for their audiences. David Draiman has said that it still blows his mind when he looks out over audiences and sees people crying or waving lighters or phone lights. The group members are in their mid 40’s now, married, some with children, and have lived lives which included pain and then happiness, and maturity. David Draiman has always been considered to have one of the best and most powerful voices in rock or metal. He is an exceptionally classically well trained operatic baritone. He has a range of 3 octaves plus 4 notes. He can move from low registers to high ones with perfect pitch every time and has protected his voice by developing a different way of singing his vocal fries - the rasp. He is also incredibly well spoken, gifted, articulate and emotionally attached to everything he sings. Just about everyone who hears his version stops and actually listens to the verses written by Paul Simon for the very first time. Every performance, live or recorded, illicit the same reaction. The magnificence (you’re the only other person aside from myself that has found this entire arrangement and the musicianship to be magnificent. Perfect). Here’s one other thing. While David never actually became a cantor in his own synagogue, he trained day in and day out to be cantor for many years and had the best training. He simply wanted more and didn’t want to be pigeonholed and he liked metal. Like an African or tribal town crier, or the best gospel choirs, or anyone who calls out to God, cantors sing the Bible/Torah/ holy book passages in Jewish synagogues to call out to God for their congregations. Some are average, some seem to cry as they sing, but what they sing is soul, is real feeling, is sacred. Personally, and this is just my humble opinion, I think that the reason why people respond the way they do to this brilliant version is because when someone is desperately crying out in the wilderness for someone to please listen, to hear that warning of the loss of our connections to one another, at this time, our time, God, Allah, Christ, is channeled and somehow we hear it - and we understand it. This song is covered at a time of despair and desperation, so it IS a cry to God to make people listen. I apologize for this long post, but I’d like to just ask you to watch the video with the sound off, and consider the story. In spite of everything that had been discarded, all of the musical instruments, these men were rescuing the means of telling a story, of singing a meaningful message that someone could hear or be touched by. They don’t know if what they found will make a difference any more because of their abandonment. They see people waiting for something on another shore having found music buried in the dirt that hadn’t been played. The lyrics tell us that the truth isn’t in neon lights, isn’t in false gods or commercialism. The truth is in real relationships. Instruments, voices and music, but that people had forgotten or given up on being heard. Loneliness takes over because people don’t dare speak up. But the last scene shows the musicians and their rescued instruments crossing the river in a sort of ark, bringing them to join the lonely silent people holding the music, to rediscover communication and connection. It takes work, it takes insistence upon being heard, you know? But while the song is so powerfully pleading and crying out for change, the visuals in the video show hope at the end of it. No one else with any other life experience, knowing what praying in song and pleading to God or thanking God in a holy place, snd who has been through some desperately depressed times in his - their - lives could impact us the way this cover does. Like others have said here, you felt what we all do when we really study all of what is going on here, even aside from the first visceral reaction. Life is complicated, but we mustn’t give up on one another. Too many folks do. I hope you know you are loved🙏❤️🙏 S

For four decades this was Simon and Garfunkel's magnum opus. Then Disturbed came along and totally owned it forever! They accentuate the way each (false) crescendo is obliterated by the next crescendo. It intensifies the emotional impact of each subsequent verse. David's emphasis on the line "the neon "god" THEY MADE" really did it for me. That was a beautiful and moving reaction video!

There are a lot of times when we as humans have to deal with our past and our emotions: fear, anger, sadness, depression, self loathing and more. Music can trigger some of these emotions and force us to deal with them. One co-worker once said to me that he never cried at his mother's funeral, I don't know if if was because he was a man or something cultural. However, I could only think that how sad I was for him in that he was inhibited and could not express his feelings and be himself. Our emotions are what make us truly human, the positive and negative. It is up to us on how we deal with and process them, it is just another form of expression that is not used enough IMO.

Simon and Garfunkel the original. A whispered warning. Disturbed. An angry battle cry that the warning was ignored.

Halflifesista,I could never sleep in silence...never. if I was forced to it traumatic. My life like yours has been traumatic. Now at 52 I realize I have to face my past to live much less sleep.we ARE here for a reason, but we have to listen to our soul to figure it out .

i haven't looked at your library of videos yet, But have you done the song Zombie? It was first done by The Cranberries and later remade by Bad Wolves. Reviewing both can be a good experience.

One was a warning. One is disappointment and almost anger that we did not heed the warning. Now look what we have...that was my take. Your reaction, real, gave me another take on it. How wonderful! Thank you!
