✋ from Pa. Found out i had a brain condition, lost my license, my job, my family then my home. I've been homeless 4x since 2016. Being homeless made it challenging to find a dr to help me. My experience with epilepsy has been absolutely awful from healthcare professionals and standard humans. I'm happy to say as of 2022 I'm technically no longer homeless

When I got off smack in 70's, the staff asked, "how do you get the monkey off your back? You stop feeding it!" Simple point. Billions and billions of $$$ have been spent in my home state of CA. It only attracts more homeless or vagrants to town, meaning the government grows to accommodate imo. End result, more government, more homeless, more taxpayers money funding all this stuff ... note the word "more." Overall problem increases every time. There's a lot of space in Slab City CA. Check it out.

True, been involved with the situation for years and people naturally go where there are the most resources. CA's budget for spending your tax dollars for resources grows every year and so does the homeless population. I've been to Slab City a few times, the people living there seem to be content with their situation.

We are spending $3.3 Billion a year on the homeless crisis. It takes 32 years to count to a billion. The money is being wasted because the only proven method to cure homelessness is a program called: "Housing First". It's "Unconditional Housing" and people straighten out their lives in this program. Shelters and Housing with rules and conditions don't work because people relapse and it takes multiple times for most people to quit, but with no home, they never quit. With "Housing First" people have a place to fall and can get back up. We are all human and deserve a real chance. Poverty is the core problem and ownership of housing is the foundation of life. The poor rarely have or can attain ownership of a home and it breaks down society. Unsupervised children in rental housing know they don't have anything to build a life on. As soon as we get comfortable, we get evicted or lose housing because it's not ours to begin with. People need a foundation for the future and that Is "Housing First".

These stats are difficult to nail down. I know from experience that there are "travel circuits" that the homeless follow, depending on the time of year. For example, when I worked in Nashville one summer, a group of them had just come from Illinois and Ohio, were staying in Nashville until the cold weather arrived, then planned on moving to Florida, either the Keys or Tent City in St. Petersburg. So the stats are immediately skewed as these nomads live in multiple states throughout the year. This is how they avoid "rehabilitation" as well. They never over-abuse the system. They actually admitted to choosing this lifestyle to avoid responsibility.

I ended up on the streets in Seattle for a few years and I met a guy who spent his summers in Seattle and then took a bus to Miami in winter. I said he was like a homeless snowbird and he laughed and said, "yeah, I suppose I am." P.S. Oh and the video is right... the homelessness issue is much more complex once you find yourself in the thick of it. Many including myself, are completely normal, smart even, but have one debilitating mental hiccup that disrupts our ability to maintain a normal life - Depression, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, etc. One poor kid I met had a major tic where he would violently shake his head every few minutes. The kid was smart or at least average in intelligence, but where was he going to work? To be sure, there are places he could work, but they are limited. His example helped me realize how important family/friend connections are - without them, any extreme deviation from "normal" can land you on a shelter bed. And let's face it, most of the world is just too busy with their own problems to help a stranger. That's not necessarily a moral judgment, it's simply how things are.

Yeah street kids and wingnuts are two breeds of homeless. Wingnuts are usually older and been in the streets for a while and dont evolve. Street kids can either form back into the system or become a wingnut at a certain age. Unfortunately a lot of them die from stupid preventable things like tooth infections, getting hit by trajns, and being killed by yuppies/housies. Street kids are usually the ones traveling in the circuits because you are bound to find someone you know. We even fly colors to show where we were going and coming from and how much longer we plan to stay in a certain location . Most travel by freight train.

Thanks Briggs. PDXer here and the homeless issue has gotten far better in the last couple of months. I agree it is a lack of housing. There used to be a number of single room occupancy hotels that closed down and cheap houses that have been turned into vacation rentals. You can definitely get a job in this town but you might not find a place to live. Also agree that the news made things far far more apocalyptic than they are. But then there was a nut job with a machete at ground Kontrol the other day so we still keep things weird. Also, I have lived here for 25 years and I would have never recommended someone live downtown.

kudos to Vegas for creating the safe space facilities. If cities would consider safe parking options in unused land or warehouses, it would probably help the ones that have the highest probability of getting back on their feet. Sure there are a hundred different what if scenarios but start there and we might see an uptick in a decrease in our homeless population.

I suspect that there is an incentive to skew these numbers. On one hand, having a high homeless population probably brings aid money from States, the feds, and non profits. On the other hand, low homeless makes your city or state more attractive to people looking to relocate. Given how hard it would be to quantify the actual numbers, it would be easy to make it look better or worse than reality.

A little while back I saw a video about why Japan doesn't have homeless people. As the video went on, the truth was revealed: that they are working and off work are hanging out in coffee shops and out-of-the-way venues. Can you investigate this? Thanks.
@poppygoldensun
@poppygoldensun Ай бұрын
Yes, it's called "hidden homelessness" because In Japan, there is a strong stigma of shame attached to homelessness and poverty. Plus, there's more value on family and social network support so homeless individuals can rely more on family and friends and not appear homeless. Nothing is as black and white as it appears and definitely not as simple as videos like this make it seem.

Im homeless in Huntsville Alabama and have been for years. The numbers of homeless are much higher than get reported. There are many people like me who are living below the radar. I've spent the last three years living in a shed behind a gas station that i used to work at. Before the shed i was living in my vehicle.

The cost of housing has risen dramatically. From all the info I've seen that is a main cause of most of the new homeless over the last 5 years or so. If you look online at the rentals available in any city you can see yourself how expensive rentals are and how few rentals are even available. And that seems to be mostly due to so much real estate being bought up by investors who've jacked up the prices simply because they can.

When you bring homelessness in states like Maryland, I notice you bring up specific cities like Baltimore. That completely ignores the lack of substantial homelessness in the other parts of the state, plus it downplays the size of a city such as Baltimore. Baltimore , as a city, has a population of around 550,000 people. But the Baltimore metro-area has a population of around 2.4 million people. Of course it will have a large homeless population, but per capita is actually nowhere near as bad as it may seem. I feel bad now that I see you followed up that video with a video showing the homelessness per capita. Thank you . 😀😀

No 44 & 34 , I have to point out that three and four are the death numbers in Japanese 🇯🇵🗾 (I don't know why there is not much talk about it when should be) and 44 , two four together is disastrous or 3 & 4 together as bad , and I mention it because I have personally experienced the wrath of the numbers 3 & 4 together , it's not funny , the states on list as number 44 and 34 gave me the horries because these poor homeless people there have got to have it the worst

Disappointing LONG vid. Answers very few, any? questions. The homeless I know, aside from hardcore mental illness, largely boils down to “I’d rather do _____ than do the necessities to have a home.” Or “I’d rather live in _____ even though I can’t afford a home than live somewhere else. “ This can be as tragic as drug abuse or living a life of absolutely no responsibilities or expectations. Home maintainence admittedly is a massive time/life/expense suck a lot of folks don’t want or can’t do. You did nothing to shed any light on the large amount of human agency involved in this issue and instead portray the “homeless” as a bunch of helpless faceless statistics.

@@WorldAccordingToBriggs but in your hour and half vid was there any attempt to even meet or talk with homeless people so how do you even know what they are capable of or what their lives are like? I’m surprised at how surprised you are that Delaware doesn’t have a really bad homeless situation. If you think about, housing is one of the reasons why many seniors choose to retire in Delaware. Delaware has below average property taxes, and overall housing costs is 2% less than the national average. Delaware literally has the seventh lowest property tax rate in the United States.

Its closer to 1 million ppl. Think about it, how many resistant humans will willingly "check a box". Also The number gets "under inflated" so less funding and support hits this segment of the population.

Briggs, please rename your first video"worst places to be homeless". Statistics do not accurately reflect quality of life, in my experience, quite the opposite. People misinterpret what you're saying as "look how good these bums have it", actively making the situation worse by reinforcing anti homeless sentiment. Please stop. As a long time vagabond I can tell you with certainty those cities you listed are unforgiving monsters, literally the worst places to be homeless. I could go on and on but I won't. Love most of your videos though.
