40 Winks a 3D collectathon platform released for the Playstation 1 (and Nintendo 64, but that is a long lost media being found story) where you play as one of two brave siblings, Ruff or Tumble, who enter the world of dreams after the old evil mad scientist and sorcerer Nitekap kidnaps the caretakers of the dreams, the winks. Ruff or Tumble must explore the six nightmare realms where the winks have been taken, along the way you also need to collect cogs to unlock doors to new areas, get dream keys to unlock the boss for each world, and enter dream jack-in-the-boxes which allow your character to turn into a stronger persona like a ninja, jester, or superhero to solve puzzles and more efficiently beat up enemies.
The game very much goes the Disney's Haunted Mansion kind of horror; it is mostly all humorous and cartoony, but there is still a surprising amount of darkness to it. You are venturing into nightmares after all and more than a few levels do a good job setting up an eerie atmosphere. Two of the most unnerving levels funnily enough are in the first world: the Creepy Crawl Cemetery and Witch Way Woods, thanks in particular to their literally grave songs. It was tough picking between the two, Creepy Crawley Cemetery has especially effective drums and choir, but I decided to go with Witch Way Woods. Creepy Crawley Cemetery's chaos eventually finds a melody and lightens up, Witch Way Woods though remains mostly droning and never really finds a tune. Add in sudden loud noises and howling wind and you got a song that legit creeped me out as a kid.
