When I first watched Ringing Bell, I was like "Oh, this is so cute!" When I got to the part where Chirin's mom dies: Me: Nope. I wasn't ready.
@PeripheralVisionary11 ай бұрын
The true monsters in the film were the other sheep. Ending: Chirin ended up not taking revenge against the wolf, having viewed him as a father figure, until he tries to raid the farm again and kill more sheep. Chirin refuses and then kills his father figure. Horrified at Chirin’s monstrous appearance, he is ostracized and alone. Or so basically, imagine if you had to kill a friend because they were going to on a mass shooting, and somehow people still hated you. If you want to look into the message, there is the issue of what war does to people and how returning solders treated by society. It is actually reminiscent of films like Hamburger Hill, where returning soldiers were treated like garbage despite being arguably the war’s greatest victims.
@puterboy211 ай бұрын
Those sheep were like the Jedi council, but if it makes you feel any better, they were all eaten by Woe in the original book and other versions.
@puterboy211 ай бұрын
Also, I think what Chirin went through was similar to Elphaba Thropp when she was ostracized by the Ozians.
@Jacob-Sophia11 ай бұрын
Yeah no matter what they went through I still think the dead and traumatized civilians are war’s greatest victims and there really _shouldn’t_ be any argument about that
@delirious881911 ай бұрын
honestly more fucked up when you realize the author was a war survivor. I can easily imagine some war vets returning to an unfriendly home because of the war and what it turned them into despite most not even wanting to go in the first place
@PeripheralVisionary11 ай бұрын
@@Jacob-Sophia From a more modern perspective this may be true, but it depends. Conscription is not always a choice and even those given a choice are ignorant of what war entails. Enrich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front dedicates a part of the text to either the recruitment in the classroom by their teacher Kantorek or their cursing of his name. For Vietnam people were forcefully conscripted, often from the impoverished communities who could not afford to get deferrals. Black men forced to fight the war of the white man, or as some protestors have stated, “No Vietnamese ever called me N*gger”. Soldiers can very well be victims in ways comparable to refugees and those caught in the crossfire. Refugees may not be combatants who cannot fight, but they are also not expected to. Soldiers on the other hand have to, and fleeing is not an option like it may be for those caught in the crossfire. Trying to argue who is the greatest victim in war is fucking pointless and detracts from the overall tragedy of it.
@nyanpirethecat225711 ай бұрын
The movie and original story has a notably dark origin since its loosely based on Takashi Yanase's (author of the story) experiences in World War II with "Chirin no Suzu" serving as an allegory for the effects of war. During the war, Yanase was a soldier during the Japanese occupation of China in World War II, where he lost his brother (a kamikaze pilot) in the Pacific Theater. Yanase himself faced moments of starvation and close to dying multiple times due to this. He suffered PTSD after the war and hated warfare preferring to be a children's author by saying "There's no justice in battle." and "The real heroes are those that sacrifice themselves to help the hunger" (the latter explains why the Anpanman Franchise focuses on food nutrition). Yanase was also deeply ashamed with Japan's actions throughout the war. Yanase was also close friends with Osamu Tezuka who also shared the same anti-war sentiments as him. Tezuka even produced the 1970 animated adaptation of "Yasashii Lion" (The Kindly Lion) by Mushi Productions while Yanse wrote the lyrics and songs in the short. "Chirin no Suzu" is also a very personal children's story compared to "The Kindly Lion" and "Bara no Hana to Joe". He passed away in late 2013 at the age of 94.

A lot of the classic manga pioneers were very anti-war. They DESPISE what the Japanese gov made them or their parents do during the war. You also see a lot of that anti-war sentiment in the works of those they inspired like Kawajiri’s Getter Robo or Nagai’s Devilman. That era of manga is so interesting because of how vastly different it feels from how manga is today.

@@mr.goblin6039 My favorite work of Osamu Tezuka is his "Unico" manga series which carries a melancholy tone while focusing on message of optimism, hope, kindness, and love. The character and series was created not long after the conclusion of The Vietnam War and the 1960s. Heck, there is even a progressive storyline in the original Unico manga which is a homage to "Romeo and Juliet" that touches on interracial relationships between a Native American Boy and a White Girl while not shying away about the uglier sides of prejudice people (from both sides). Near the end of the story, Unico actually warns the boy that "White people really are judgemental towards people with different skin colors and race". I loved how the Native American Tribe and the Kid himself are actually depicted in a positive light and treated just like ordinary people compared to other media at the time (since Unico was published between 1976 till 1979).

Chirin had always been an outsider before his mother was killed, and when he kills the wolf to get revenge for his mother and all his fellow sheep, they shun him anyway because they fear him. I absolutely love Chirin no Suzu. Though I prefer the original Japanese version since the dub sounds....pretty clunky (and also has some top notch voice acting I'd say), but it's one of my favorites
@RaynaGrimm11 ай бұрын
it do look old enough that its from the era dubs didnt get the love they should of been given. glad there are some dubs out there now that are doing their best to be as close to good as teh subs as they can these days
@dgayle234810 ай бұрын
Nah the dub is goated (no pun intended). I attribute the clunkiness to it being presented like a cautionary folk tale.
