Ditching at the ETR. S2 E2

Those limbs and the brush have all become tangled. Going to be difficult to pull it apart and feed it through a normal chipper. I'd try and get a tub grinder, it can be fed with a grapple.

You can't feed a tub grinder from an open station, most tubs say on the side stay back 300 ft

This brought back a memory long ago of an old branch line I ran down on over 30 years ago. All brushy and water collected during a rain event that almost covered the top of the rails in some parts. We used to joke our run was more like a barge than a train!

At 27:04 that is the first time I have seen a dump truck that could spin 90 degrees. I was thinking earlier that he would have to get off the rail to dump the dirt somewhere. I was glad to see y’all are keeping it. I’m sure y’all can use some fill somewhere on the ETR.

At least its good progress.. Amazing how much effort it takes to restore even a short segment of track. One of these days Google maps satellite view will update, and show off all the progress you have made, hopefully with per-diem track rental cars in place ... Yeah, some of us figured out where your are, and seen the view from above, but as per your wishes, I am revealing nothing to anyone. Wishing continued progress and success to you👍😁. .... I've always wanted a Gradall, and could never think up a good enough story to schlep to my wife so I could buy one... old ones are not that expensive.. some even start at $1500.!! I still dream.. and watching your progress being expedited by one of these articulated wonders is JUST PLAIN FUN!!!

I'd call your local Fire Dept. or Volunteer Fire Dept. They may enjoy a practice "controlled burn" to burn up all of your wooden materials. We had on old outer building that we donated, they enjoyed the experience they gained by the controlled burn. Doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe provide Pizza & Lemonade and a contribution to the Volunteer Dept. would probably be greatly appreciated as a "win win"! Good Luck!

Get some Tordon on all of those stumps (or pull them) or the whole thing will grow right back, but thicker. I learned that the hard way 😊 - most hardwood trees resprout from the stump, and will create a new tree with 6-8 trunks - a real mess 🥴

A lot of gradalls have Hi Rails, a lot of them are mounted to a truck frame that I’ve seen being used in railroad service

I would normally say you need a whispah chippaaaahhhhh. JD said it right like a morbark tub grinder and a grapple. Use your rail anchors. Maybe they make a tow behind with rail gear. Most efficient way. Great job with drainage. Brush eater was cool. Progress

@@tucobenedicto109 Bingo! Most Tube viewers don't know their butt from a rathole when it comes to doing real hands on work. Burn it? Bad idea. Use brush killer along your R.O.W.? Might get things looking better at the risk of developing Cancer later.

Think one thing should do is. like half way down the track line. build like a simple little lean-to shelter. or just a sheltered roof. something that can either stand under or place a few logs to sit down on under it. from the elements of weather.

Find a herbicide applicator with a hi rail spray rig. Hit that ROW with a bare ground application to clear vegetation from your ballast. Spray out to the back side of your drainage with a broad leaf herbicide (Tordon) to keep brush down. Your state department of agriculture would be a good consulting source for contractors licensed in your area.

Not sure about local laws and ordinances but where I live you could get a permit to perform a controlled burn on all the brush, that would be the cheapest most effective method if you could get the proper paperwork for it

If you want to be absolutely sure on the drainage. Contact the USGS for a topographical terrain map. It does not cost a lot of money and it should have your railroad tracks on the map already as a terrain feature. The map will also help you with the terrain profile along the line which could come in handy later. You can buy a topographical map for less than $100 usually.

They do have attachments for mini excavators similar to that gradall trimmer. Might be something to add to your equipment wish list to make future maintenance a tad easier. Just a thought.

If you have somewhere you can burn it safely, it will be cheeper. But not greener, you may be able to sell the chipping to a garden centre. Wish I lived near you I would volenteer. But I live in the UK. Thanks for the videos of what's going on.
