The mix rate for that glyphosate is between 2 1/2 to 5 ounces per gallon. You mixed it at about triple the highest rate by adding 2 1/2 gallons to 12 1/2 gallons of water. Next time try 14 gallons of water and two quarts of glyphosate, and use a boom sprayer for quick, even coverage. For the stumps, use Tordon on a fresh cut or the trees will come right back.

Dig at it and after letting the swarming die down I douse it with some torch fuel and set it ablaze. It seemed to work and we went out for a bit come back and they're obviously still active. The green you see is things you missed. At the concentration you were spraying you would have killed anything it touched. If you are going to continue to hand spray, consider using a marking dye so you can see where you have sprayed. You can do a touch-up run with 10 oz. of gly in a two gallon sprayer. A little spritz on any remaining green will kill it.

The channel "The Kelley's Country Life" just showed off a sprayer he built from stripping parts off another sprayer. It is built on a 55 gallon barrel with a 5gpm pump and two sprayers that give it a 30-40 foot spray without booms so would be perfect for putting on a cart and running it down the rails. A IBC tote to mount on the truck so you can refill. The setup also has a wand for spot controlling but that is just valved in so can turn off the sprayers and turn on the wand with valves. You should also look at what is needed for a portable shower as you can pack it in most cars/trucks. A small electric pump hooked to a sprayer handle and a pvc pipe frame to hold up a tarp for privacy and to avoid a indecent exposure charge. As you get into cooler months you can run the water into camp shower to get hot water. One of those ziplock style storage bags to keep a full set of clothes along with a towel and the portable shower would let you clean up anywhere and be in a fresh set of clothes quickly in case of a spill or just a very dirty job.

I'm in a desert area and you're where you actually get more than 5" of rain a year, so the amount of vegetation we fight versus what you're fighting is night and day. I don't know if NiBor or any other Borate/Boron products are legal there, but they do provide several years of 'no vegetation' once put down and incorporated in the soil by the rains. Love the video and the great progress...

I'm not sure what was the chemical make up of your first, mix but your second was a generic round-up. You might have a little better job, it you would have added some 2-4-D. The stuff used on the RR you can't buy over the counter. Look for a brush killer type of mix. Round-up is a contact killer, mostly for grassy plants, look for that brush killer, some have 2-4-D added to them. Second get a bigger tank 100 or 125 gals, third ditch the wand, build a spray bar, reach out there 3 feet or more, turn around and do the other side on the return. This equipment that you will used at least once a year or more.

In addition to the right mixture, the sprayer setting must also be adjusted to get enough of the product out onto the weeds and whatever other vegetation that you want to kill. Over spraying gets the job done, but is way too costly. Under spraying is useless. Some railroads use to use diesel fuel to kill the weeds.

Year #1: I did an early spring spray just as green was starting to show. I followed up in late summer with a second spray. Following year, I only needed the early spring spraying and used less product. Early spring is when the stuff spreads so don't be surprised when all those weeds are back next year.

When you said weed killing, I expected you to show up with a couple of 55-gallon drums of chemicals... not a half-gallon jug! This is railroading, not home gardening! You have to do things on an industrial scale. Rent a machine and spray continuously off one side of your hi-rail to the end of the line. Then reverse, come back and spray the other side. One more trip down the line to spray between the rails. Just a little spritz here and there while walking the car down the tracks isn't going to do much.
@RegWhelan2 жыл бұрын
Hi, A big mistake a lot of users of glyphosate Is that they assume that more is better. Glyphosate is carried to the roots and the rest of the plant within the plant's own distribution system. When it is added at high concentration rates it rapidly destroys the contact area. That prevents the proper distribution to the non contacted area of the plants. I don't remember for sure but I think It was mixed at about 4ml Roundup concentrate to 1 litre of water lightly sprayed over the weeds etc. Using flood jets and not misting jets were used so the wind didn't blow it everywhere. Reg.

If you'd soaked everything where it made the ground wet it would probably last a year but just getting the weeds wet when you sprayed, I don't think it will last a year. When the railroad applies the weed killer they drench everything and it soakes into the top layer of dirt. That's why it last a year for them. The large quantity of product applied is what makes it work. Of course they have tank cars full of the weed killer and the capital to fill them up. I think you're gonna have a long battle with the brush and weeds before you're finished. Then you'll still have to maintain it every year. Good video. Stay well. -Wil 👍

Glyphosphate I believe is the same as round up. Find a pre-emergent that can be mixed in with the weed killer and it will prevent seeds that are in the ground now from sprouting. Also if you want to make water wetter use Dawn dish detergent it makes your solution stick better to the leaves. This material prevents Photosynthesis.

Regular 5 percent household vinegar can be used on its own against weeds. It's even better mixed with salt and dish soap. I love spending other people's money, so with that in mind. Have you thought about buying a small to mid sized tractor with front loader? Can attach a proper weed sprayer to the 3 point hitch as well as many other implements like a slasher (heavy duty brush cutter / mower) or even a carry all (a small flat bed to transport, well anything). There's also great potential for some back yard mechanics to happen, using the tractor as a portable power source using either its built in hydraulics or its PTO. Think about a high capacity electrical generator with a dead engine. It is cut the engine off and slap on some mounts and a PTO driveshaft. Or welder, or air compressor, or hydraulic pump. Plus, if your bucket has a quick disconnect, you can mount forks for light duty off-road pallet handling, lifting traction motors Etc. You'd be surprised at what a cheap beat up old tractor can do. And they are so simple in operation that anyone with the slightest mechanical sense can work on them. And if you do get one with a front loader, a 4in1 bucket will let you grab small logs and green waste as well as grab onto any home made tools, such as a very wide and stiff broom for levelling ballast, smoothing out cleared areas alongside your tracks.

It doesn't need to be big, in fact a more compact unit would be better, it doesn't need to be pretty. It doesn't even need a 4in1 bucket because a couple of grapple arms, hydraulic hose and bi-directional valve are easy enough to retrofit. An old scrapper blade for the 3 point hitch (with reach over the back hand cranked rotation) and a bunch of straw broom heads clamped on can be used to level and bed the ballast. You don't need to throw money into a hole, but thinking about longer term maintenance of the yards and railway and how you are going to achieve that when the railway is in operation, storing cars, or having customers shunting in and unloading / loading their cars Etc. Pushing a track cart along isn't always going to work and when the yard is expanded, there will be a need for a maintenance possibly including grading and rolling access tracks, weed killing a gravel yard Etc. If you need to buy it eventually and it's available at a price that doesn't need financing, might as well do it sooner and reap the benefits now.

That is their long term plan, to get tracks into a condition where they are legal for car storage. One good source of income for very short lines is what is known as "per diem", a daily fee for rental of track for car storage. A larger railroad often finds it more economical to use a nearby short line for car storage than tie up its own tracks.

I don’t know much if anything about railroads. I was thinking you were crazy buying this rail yard and planning on storing cars. Here in So Cal there is a old line that dead ends in Piru and starts in Ventura. In the day it was busy, hasn’t been used in decades. I have noticed over the last year there are now miles of it with parked tanker cars, I guess the business model of storing rail cars is viable. Learn something new all of the time.

Hi there. Never knew that weed control could be so entertaining! Got to ask; why did you not consider contacting the railways companies what they use for this job?? Like the titles and comments on the screen too! John in Lincolnshire UK
