Aretha Franklin was a prime exam of what it means to reach the pinnacles of success. She began at a very young age, as a gospel singer. She never deviated from her gospel training and roots. I can't think of any songs she sang where her gospel roots are present. She showed the world that if the audience applauds your entrance with as much fervor as they do at the conclusion of your performance, you have to ne authentic. You have to be genuine. Many if not most black singers, began singing in the church. They make the mistake of abandoning their gospel roots. Aretha never did. Rest in eternal peace Ms Franklin

OMG. I saw her in concert at The Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA when I was 15 years old. I watched as her magnificent artistry brought grown men to tears. From age 8, my parents bought every album she released. Chris Cuomo on his CNN show on the eve of her passing said something so profound. He said "if you dont believe in God, thats your prerogative. But how could anyone hear Aretha sing and not know there must be a God"? Soon after her passing, NPR radio aired an interview Aretha did with Terry Gross. At the conclusion of the interview, Terry said of Aretha, "she's the greatest singer of the 20th and 21st century, and perhaps one of the greatest of all time. We miss you Aretha. Rest in eternal peace

She looked absolutely ethereal here, especially with the way her dress flows in the wind. I'd like to imagine this Aretha being the one singing in the heavenly choir.

Fantastic performance! Exactly what we need to listen in this time. "I have a dream" She is the voice for all of us, all over the world. I dont believe in politic, Putin, Trumph, Hitler, democracy has never been so fragile. But in the voice of Aretha there is hope❤👍

When she sang "he took my childhood" and then started to take off her coat it was such a well coordinated in sync approach to deliver the emotion needed for that very phrase she sang. Such a pro and a class act💯🙌🏻❤

Watching how the performance evolves is fascinating. From the bow at the beginning to dropping the coat in the most elegant way possible, the moving air billowing her gown, the song intensifying, the choir, the big finish. It's very operatic. THIS is why we have and always will call her the Queen.

This was a PERFORMANCE, top to bottom. She made an entrance; her performance had movement; there were subtle costume changes; musically, it had a beginning, middle, and end; she controlled the pace and measured her volume according to the lyrics; it decrescendo and crescendos. It had modulations, melismas, and runs. Masterful.

The cut to Clinton at 1:16 is both full of hope at the time and disappointing seeing how his presidency went.
