1000% agree with you guys on the helmet thing. I’m a former Paramedic and ER nurse, motorcycle rider and diver. Brain buckets are super important if you want to survive an accident with some semblance of normal function. I’ve seen accidents where even the best helmets would not have helped, but I’ve seen a LOT more where having a helmet meant you walked away instead of being carried.

Such a great video, guys. I can't tell you how inspiring the two of you are. After over 30 years of diving, you two have inspired me to take my diving to the next level. I'm glad you brought up helmets. Please talk about each of your helmets. I'm having a really hard time figuring out my helmet. The only one I've been able to find is the light monkey. I'm not sure why the industry doesn't have many options. Any info on your helmets and possibly ones that can be modified would be greatly appreciated. Lastly... THAT VAN!! Unbelievably cool! Please do a video tour of that thing, it is sick!

Many cave divers feel helmets aren't needed for protection. After all if you're bumping your head hard into rock or formations you're probably being to rough and fast and your likely to damage the formations. My instructor didn't want me wearing one during my training so I could feel the 'feedback' from the cave. ;) After I got some more experience I did build one anyway, not so much for protection (the hood already does that) but so I could clip off my primary light while working with reels or when I needed both hands to go through tights passages. I also store one backup light on it. The light monkey helmet doesn't fit my big head so I made my own. It doesn't need to protect against hard knocks, just small ones and provide a mounting point for stuff. Bought a cheap children's Kayak helmet, removed the foam liner, glued on a bit of 3d mesh fabric in so it fits my head and hood (mesh material isn't buoyant unlike foam). Drilled some holes for bungee to lightly go under my chin and some in the back and sides for clip my backup light under. Also recommend the Razor Helmer Mount light holder plus their hand mount, which make it child's play to move your light head between hand and helmet. Best starting point is to watch Innerspace Explorer's "How to make a helmet for sidemount diving" video.

@Yggdrasil42 Thanks for the info. I've heard the same arguments against it, and I'd probably buy into them if I hadn't already hit my head twice with no scooter, and both were nearly standing still. Once in a wreck, I got held up on something turned my head to untangle myself and hit the side of my head on some hard metal sticking out. It was a similar incident when my tank valve got hung up in a tight overhead, and I barely lifted my head and got wacked in the back of my head. I would always prefer not to wear one, but if I know the dive is overhead and has potential tight spots, I want to wear one. The other reason you also stated... It'd be nice to have something to clip off lights to keep my hands free. That would have helped tremendously in the wreck that day. Again, thanks for the info and safe diving, my friend.

I’m not a diver by any means. After stumbling upon one of your Dive Talk videos, I’ve developed the urge to watch more. The way you (Gus and Woody) educate, converse, and entertain with your reactions and commentary using your vlog footage or existing occurrences is truly captivating. If I had the money I would hands-down start diving TODAY and become a member. You both have a hilarious dynamic, are super informative, and best of all you’re genuine and honest. I’m sure you’ve inspired many others as you’ve inspired me. Gus, you look amazing and sharper than ever. Woody, I am still curious and fascinated how you deco so exceptionally (the no-bubble, alien-octopus thing). 😂 Thank you both for sharing what you love and creating quality content - please keep doing what you’re doing. 🌊

My cave dive guides have taught me to go slowly, much slower than I used to, because it uses less gas (in OC) to cover the same distance. It sounds counterintuitive but if you can get your breathing rate into a resting mode it makes a big impact.

I recently wrecked my motorcycle up in the mountains, and your point about wearing helmets couldn't be more true. It was ultimately my own fault I wrecked, but it's not as if i planned to wreck that day. Unexpected shit happens, in any sport, I've had passengers ask "are we gonna wreck?" When i tell them to put on my gear. It's there JUST IN CASE, if something does go wrong, we make it out ALIVE, cause nothing else matters if you're dead after it all. If it weren't for my helmet, I would 100% be dead right now, Please be safe everyone🙏 especially my motorcycle riders
