Gary, I'm a little confused about which type of soil we use when moving a 4/5 week grown seedling into a larger cup; do we make more of the seed starting mix- with or without the vermiculite?.......... OR do we use, instead, a less expensive universal type bagged soil to fill up the larger cup, and then put the plug in it? I thought NOT to use anything other than our seed starting mix since they typically have live microbes/bacteria in them that is not necessary at this point and could cause issues using them indoors? Also, should we ALWAYS sterilize any type of bagged soil used to prevent fungus knat eggs- since we're still keeping the plants indoors? Lastly, how long should the larger plugs stay under the grow lights if it's still too cold outside to put them in the ground? I've watched numerous videos and am still a little uncertain on these steps; if you could please clarify this, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!! LOVE your videos and book.❣

I’ve started my seeds and they are ready to pot up. I still have seed starting mix left over...can I just add some worm castings to that and use it for potting up? Then I wouldn’t have to buy any potting soil or anything. I haven’t hardened them off yet. Peas, sunflowers, cukes, yellow squash are all pretty big for their little cells. Western PA, zone 5B/6A. Hi Gary! is it typical for the bottom leaves to turn yellow and fall off so soon? my tomato seedlings are 4 weeks old and I just separated into bigger pots 10 daysago. and gave them first dose of fertilizer when I transplanted. The leaves turned yellow just a couple of days ago and they fell off. Is that watering or fertilizer issue? I haven't watered for a week now cause the soil hasn't dried out. You make an excellent case for avoiding indoor fungus gnats. I got a potting soil bag delivered that was entirely infested and it’s been a pain ever since. Definitely doing seed starting mix going forward. Question: if I up-pot and use fish emulsion wouldn’t that sort of defeat the purpose of seed starting mix? I noticed my gnats got ten times worse after I used it. Seriously though, my pest problem feels so much worse this year. Except aphids and gnats (2021) vs loopers (2020). These tiny critters are driving me crazy. 😭

Once the FG are established they just take off. Up potting can bring in more eggs and issues but FE wont make thing worse. I've seen your video addressing fungus gnats... One way I have been VERY successful all winter on my house plants has been to use a solution of one part peroxide to three parts water. I've read it doesn't hurt plants because the H2O2 just reduces to water anyway... Can this method safely be used on seedlings as well? It's just so simple and I really like how effective it is... Thanks in advance and THANK YOU for your seed starting series, I've learned SO MUCH!!! Shoot, one more quick question.... I made too much seed starting mix (I'm talking about making too much sterile soil by adding boiled water, for planting seeds)... How long can I save that to use it later? I made it about 2 weeks ago and it's still in a container and it's kept it's dampness...

Can you use chemical fertilizer to feed in the bottom instead of fish emulsion?

Yes, just make sure you dilute really well. I use Miracle Gro that has a measuring spoon. I only use half of the tiny cup of the spoon with a gallon of water.

Hi, love your videos and been following with my own tomatoe and flower seedlings. Got a question my tomatoe seedlings are about 3 inches tall and some leaves seem to be curling and turning yellow. I used no fertilzer, started them in Jiffy Peat Pelletts. Any advise is extremely appreciated. They are under grow lights I purchased from your video on lights. I have the light placed about 5 inches above them. Thank you

Time for some nitrogen. Very dilute watersoluble fertilizer would help now. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
