Great video! I had a garage sale with nothing but plants and cookbooks last year. Sold almost all my 100 plants for $1 each. I did this last year, just selling extra plants in front of my house. I didn't try profiting- just selling extras that I had no use for. I earned enough for offset my seed purchases that year. It was nice being able to turn over some older seeds, too, that would eventually get too old to sprout.

I sold tomato plants last year. I live in a rural area and had doubts that anyone would come. I advertised on craigslist and facebook, put a sign up in front of my driveway, then I set up a self service stand out in the front yard and chained a locked moneybox to a tree. The moneybox had a slit in the top so people could pay. Basically the honor system......but it worked and nobody stole plants. Within a few weeks every plant was sold. There is a nursery less than a minutes drive from my house so I grew tomato varieties that were hard to find at nurseries. What plant is your biggest seller after tomatoes? Peppers? Thanks for this series.

So the series starts with no added ferts to the starting mix. You can add in worm castings. I do add it into my potting up mix which right, now is the my Jiffy Starting mix. Hi Gary! I'm using this method for herbs at my plant sale this summer. Wanted to see if you've ever had an issue with weak stems when overseeding. I did all the right things: lights close to the seedlings, fan on for part of the day, running my hand over them, etc. I still found that today when I up potted my sage, the stems were weak which made the plants lean over in their new pots. I'm assuming some of it is transplant shock which I tried to reduce by watering them after transplanting. I was curious to see if you've ever run into the weak stem problem because the plants are so close together so some of them are buried in the crowd, as such, and don't get the air from the fan. The sage plants were about a month old. Did I wait too long to up pot? Any insight would be great, thanks! Appreciate what you do and all the practical knowledge you share!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 ай бұрын

I've thought about doing this before but not sure I have enough shelving and lights. About how much shelf space would you need for a 28 cell flat of herbs after they're all divided into individual plants? How many flats could you fit on that 48" wide wire shelving unit that you showed recently? Getting an idea of space requirements would be helpful for me to decide if it's feasible.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm 28 cells... You could probably manage with a 2 shelf set up like I have. I have 4, 2 on each side. You can get 4 flats on there length wise. You also have a top so you could rotate plants out of the light for a day. When they are large light isnt much of a problem honestly. Also I'm interested in being able to make a little money as well doing something I'm newly in love with. Extra money could help pay for what my hubby calls my hobby which means until I can get some veggies most of the cost comes out of my personal money😊 I'm mostly kidding b cuz the hubby would pay for it all you know happy wife happy life and all that haha but really thank you I'm sure I'm not the only housewife looking for a way to help pay for her garden and I'm sure a lot of guys who have the extra time wouldn't mind the extra knowledge sorry so long

One of the best things you can do is look for a "dirt" company in your area, such as a place one might buy gravel for landscaping. Look for a company that has words like "dirt" or "earthworks" in their name. These kinds of companies typically have gardening soil or potting base for sale by the ton. My local company, Prescott Dirt Co, sells gardening soil for $38/ton. I hope that's helpful.

You can if you have the space. Since we are starting 12-16 week early, it is usually still freezing out. So you start them in a 72 cell flat which is small and manageable. As they get larger and get into pots, youll need a lot of room inside to manage them, so hopefully its getting warmer out and some can go outside. a 72 cell flat is just less space than 72 cups. @GEOsustainable Жыл бұрын
$500 for an entire years worth of work is what it turns out to be. If we paint a picture, imagine 1000 plants. How much space would that take up? Now imagine selling them for $1.49 each at markets. You make, if everything sells, about $1500. per acre. Now at the end of the day, look at the 75% that did not sell. They need to be hauled back, and watered and tended more. In that 75% is 10% loss from breakage, plants just die when moved, and other sad deaths. Farmers Markets are busy 2 weeks a year. Your best chance is to grow what no one else is. Find a niche. Vertical gardening can multiply that times 10. I did a video series on it. You gotta love growing things to do this kind of work, for sure. No matter who you are, a farmer feeds you.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
Well it's actually $500 for a sale period. And you can cycle in plants over different time frames. Cool crops, herbs, flowers, warm crops. You have a smaller window for selling but can also do it again for fall crops. Finding a niche is perfect and growing what the boxscores dont have. In MD, people pay $4-6 a plant which is crazy. So a yard sale plant sale at $2-3 is very welcomed. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN The term is stratification. That means you chill seeds in order to allow them germinate. You have to stratify most tree seeds, strawberries, most perennials. Some seeds have to stratify to the point of freezing in order to awaken in spring. Coneflowers are one such seed.

Great timing. I was literally looking up whether or not I needed a vendor's license to sell my superhots at the markets in Maryland. Best I could tell is I'd need at least a transient vendors license (which is free), but I could be wrong. Anyway, thanks for another great idea. I'm looking forward to some Dark Purple Opal Basil this year and it would be really nice to make some money off of it. I didn't think about being able to divide it up in that manner.
