@@joemarais7683 Wdym "wildly difficult"? There are entire cultures in the world that have been playing music that isn't in 12-TET (our western tuning) for centuries now. It's not that hard. However, ofc, de gustibus, you don't have to like it and I totally get that. After all, people have wild reactions to it, it's basically like discovering a fourth spacial dimension, haha. For the record I've been studying music for more than a decade now, and I've composed a couple 24-TET songs, with frankly not such difficulty.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicola_Vicentino Basically it solves the problem othwr instruments with fixed notes have: the inability to play in all keys without compromises. We currently jam flats and sharps together on the same key but they aren't the same note, and this gets apparent when some keys sound awful on them.

@cseggerman
@cseggerman 7 ай бұрын
@whyamiwastingmytimeonthis There’s debate on which temperament Bach used. Even in even temperament you get some keys where the intervals are a little grumbly if not the "wolf notes" of earlier ones. There’s some theory Bach's temperament is shown in the squiggles on the title page of WTC. Well-Tempered is not necessarily "equal tempered."

Beautiful craftsmanship. It reminds me of some very well made accounting software that allows me to do all my dollar values in base 15. It’s a lot more efficient because when you are working with large numbers they appear shorter on the screen. Of course you have to learn new names for all the numbers and you have to build a community of users who you can hire from to run it. The IRS hasn’t quite caught up to the need for base 15 dollar values, but it’s only a matter of time.

I always felt like western music theory really limits themselves with their whole 12 note system. There's quarter steps and 8th steps etc etc. But you don't ever see instruments with them in the west. Most often you see it in Chinese/Japanese/Korean/etc music. They use instruments that allow you to hit any note similar to a fretless instrument like a violin. You can get some really cool sounds out of half steps quarter steps and everything in-between.
@achillessergios798
@achillessergios798 Жыл бұрын
Thats not really true, all string instruments are fretless and will tune up or down on a note often to make a sort of mean temperament naturally depending on the key. Especially in chamber music. Same goes for western choral music. Also almost all music before the common practice period used a vast array of complex tunings not limited to just quarter or 8th notes

Some modern western musicians use microtones in their music. Two examples that jump to mind are Jacob Collier and Australian band KGATLW. It is less common in western music because it wasn’t a part of the musical tradition of the west. That said, I prefer to think of it as more of music’s rich tapestry and just a different perfectly valid way to approach making music and art than a limitation. Some of the most beautiful music ever written was created by the twelve note system.

it's pretty crazy that my "out of tune" is someone else's "in tune". Music is mysterious in so many ways... The whole thing about minor sounding sad/major sounding happy being culture-dependent or not is so fascinating. I can't imagine hearing a minor chord and thinking "that sounds happy", but other people can. Not to mention, _why_ does it sound happy, sad, good, bad or whatever, I mean what does _happiness_ sound like at all? Well to me, in its simplest form, it sounds like a major chord! haha It's so damn fascinating, and that's without even getting into microtonal music which to me just sounds out of tune, but as I said to other people it sounds as pure as the 12-tone scale we're used to in the West! Super interesting stuff
@mon0light

To you? Nobody else can answer that question, because subjective taste is subjective. It's personal. It's opinion, not fact. The FACT is that plenty of people have the opinion that microtonal music sounds good to them, and their opinions are just as legit as yours

@@merlinambrosius4398 and turkish too! I just mean with lots of other instruments playing chords etc. If you look at indian music. A lot of the ensemble are composed of rhythm instruments and accompanying instruments like a sitar that provided a drone of a single note. This allows you to use microtones more freely. But if you were to try and harmonise it in a chord or with other instruments…oof

That's a good point. Without completely identical instruments, trying to tune up must be an exercise in futility, haha. And trying to get the intonation perfected on a fretted instrument. 🤦‍♂️

As Pythagoras found, 7/12 power of 2 is closer to 3/2, or the just perfect fifth, than 18/31 power of 2...😢 However, 10/31 power of 2 is much closer to 5/4, i.e., just major third, than 4/12 power of 2 ‼︎🎉
@henrikljungstrand2036
@henrikljungstrand2036 Жыл бұрын
Well 31/53 power of 2 is MUCH closer to 3/2 than 7/12 power of 2, and also 17/53 power of 2 is much closer to 5/4 than 4/12 ( = 1/3 ) power of 2. Even 24/41 power of 2 is much closer to 3/2 than 7/12 power of 2.

@@henrikljungstrand2036 Exactly. That's why I like 53-equal temperament. But I like the 270ET and 311ET even more.
@henrikljungstrand2036
@henrikljungstrand2036 Жыл бұрын
@@beloved9 Yeah well we get some decent temperaments even with 72ET, 87ET and 94ET. 118ET is almost 5-limit JI and 171ET is almost 7-limit JI. 342ET is like 171ET except in the 11-limit. But 270ET is almost perfect for 13-limit music, since it tempers all the smallest *superparticular* 13-limit commas, while it doesn't temper any large or medium sized such commas (in the patent val, that is).

i don't understand a single thing in this reply section but slay
@beloved9
@beloved9 Жыл бұрын
@@msruag The reason why there are usually 12 steps in an octave (12ET) is that the seventh of the 12, the "perfect fifth," is close to the genuine pure perfect fifth 3/2 = 1.5. In fact, 7/12th power of 2 ≈ 1.4983. However, the pitch of the major third is not close to the just major third 5/4 = 1.2500, because it is 2 to the 4/12th power of 2 ≈ 1.2599. On the other hand, in the 31ET presented in the video, it is the opposite. The perfect fifth is inaccurate at 2 to the 18/31st power ≈ 1.4955 (This is essentially what "INSTEAD 18 OF 7" means!!), and the major third is accurate at 2 to the 10/31st power ≈ 1.2505. For both to be accurate, a more microtonal temperament (such as the 53ET, 118ET, or more) is needed. I hope this comment helps you understand. : )
