It's true! I dove all over the Laguna Coves, dead mans reef, (1996-2003) on very regular basis, at least 2 times a week, night dives on Thursdays, and there were no adult sheephead at all to be seen in the area. I've got familiar with them diving in Catalina and Chanel Islands.

I've snorkled Crescent Bay and nearly out to Seal Rock, but am always leery of what's below because I can never see the bottom. I've really got to get SCUBA certified

I've never seen anything below that is going to hurt you in Crescent Bay. The worst thing out there would be a getting poked by a sea urchin (if you stuck your hand in one) or if you grabbed a Sculpin fish, which have spines that carry a mildly venomous poison. It will cause pain if you get pricked, but is not deadly. Mostly, if you are not grabbing onto the reef blindly, you won't have any issues.

What go pro camera do you use and what are the settings
@dalgamor
@dalgamor 3 жыл бұрын
I have used various Go Pro cameras over time and am currently using Hero 8s. However, I think the ones we used in this video were a Hero 6 and a Hero 4. On the Hero 6 we shot with Shutter on Auto, EV comp 0, Iso min 100, max 400, WB 5500, Sharp at Med, Color Flat.

Cool dive but saying there were "no adult sheephead before the Laguna closure" is just plain wrong. Before the closure the fish had a fear and respect of humans and therefore the big ones would stay away from divers. Now they approach divers because people routinely hand feed them. Of course there are more fish now than there was before the closure but to say there was nothing before it is just dumb. Lastly, the closure is beneficial to the closed area but has been much more detrimental to the surrounding open areas as it has limited available fishing area and as a result the surrounding areas are fished much harder than pre 2010. Theres no balance anymore. Once again cool video but I just cant stand it when people say there was nothing in Laguna.

We will have to disagree on this. I have been diving Laguna for 42 years now, having made over 3000 dives there and though there were small males, no large males were left at any of the common dive sites. I still have video from that time, and no large males are on any of my footage.

Also, I never said there was 'nothing' in Laguna, so please don't put words into my mouth. However, it was over fished and therefore the balance was way off. I was part of the team that replanted baby abalone in Laguna because they were all gone. Now, because there is a balance of life, we're starting to see an abundance of abalone, large fish, sharks, etc. A couple months ago I spotted a 40 pound (approximately) Black Sea Bass. The game preserve works, Laguna has been transformed to a viable eco system. More areas should be declared marine sanctuaries, instead of people complaining about the few we have.

@@SailingSVLynx though I am much younger than you are I have been fishing and diving this coast since the very beginning of my life. I dove Laguna as often as possible before the closure. It's fine if you disagree, however Laguna was plenty healthy before it was closed. All of my personal largest coastal fish that I have caught in my life were in Laguna before the closure. Sheephead, bass (both calico and sandbass), halibut, wsb, cabazon, etc. Also about the black sea bass, Laguna being closed has nothing to do with them. They have been closed state wide long before Laguna, and they are a migratory fish, they do not sit on one reef their entire life. I spend well over 300 days a year on the water as for the past 5 years I have been a full time deckhand. We see black sea bass up to 300 pounds at nearly every single reef on the coast. I was apart of the research trips that took place in the Laguna closure last fall. Those trips used crystal cove as a reference to see how well the closure works. What it showed to us is that the areas outside the closure are suffering severely. A much smarter option to just closing off a stretch of coast would be to intermittently close different sections. For example the Laguna closure could be off limits for a year or any other period of time, and then after that time it would be opened and a different stretch of coast such as Dana point to san Mateo point could be closed for the same period of time and so on and so forth giving even pressure to the entire coast and giving fish a break every other year or so.

@@SailingSVLynx lastly you can never over fish the ocean by rod and reel if you are following the regulations. The reason being there will ALWAYS be fish that dont want to bite that day for one reason or another and the dfw regulations are set to maintaine a healthy ecosystem. The problem isnt sport fishing, its poaching, killing undersize or too many fish a day, and commercial fishing that harms the ocean. However in lagunas case as its mainly shallow reefs that are closed, commercial wasnt the problem. Go to any jetty, harbor, pier, or any other place where you can fish the ocean without a boat or license and I guarantee you will find people keeping illegal fish. It's not the sport fisherman. It's the poachers and the uninformed

@@Andwho67 The problem includes spearfishing, which was heavily done in laguna, and they shoot the large fish that don't bite lines. And, yes, following regulations for hunting helps, but it doesn't solve everything. Once you shoot all the larger fish, then you change the eco system. Now other things grow too abundant (like sea urchins). Because of the game preserve, Laguna is now a healthy system, and is still mending. Sharks are only just now starting to (rarely) show up now that fish are getting large enough. It's nice that you seem to think everyone sees black sea bass of large size... but they don't. This is the first one I've ever seen in Laguna (though I have seen them in outer islands before). One year on and one year off would not bring back large fish, they would just be hunted away again. I support Laguna and their making of this preserve. I have spoken to city council members praising them about it and will continue to do so.
